Windows 8 - "8" because cats were taken and dog races don't sound as intimidating
Typical MS, doing a brave thing after 20 years of same crap, then spending the next 4 OS versions backtracking on it.
I wouldn't say they were backtracking, at least not yet, but rather merging the two experiences together so it isn't such a harsh transition from one part of the OS to the other. Hell Windows Phone has a context menu for items and it's always boggled my mind that Windows 8 didn't. And the power button being moved to the start screen is better because it isn't really a "setting".
Hey guys, how well is win 8 optimized? Does it have less overhead than 7?
yes

I don't trust this. The iPhone, mainly. Can you show me that that's not just a picture in the Photos app?
It was posted by Winocm/Kennet on twitter who is a kernel developer and had ported the OS X kernel to the iPhone among other things (6.1.4 jailbreak as well)
See, that's the thing. The OS X kernel on the iPhone makes a lot of sense, because iOS uses the exact same kernel. Windows is more difficult because there are no Windows drivers for the iPhone's hardware. If he's patched full iPhone hardware support into the Windows kernel, I'll be extremely impressed. Until then, I'm skeptical. The pictures don't say much, especially when so easily faked.
Yeah it's a proof of concept, and I have absolutely zero conviction it's faked since he's a recognised developer and since Cotullacode did the same thing although he vanished, his OS X kernel also worked on other targets and even ran iOS binaries
Well, why not throw some of this proof my way? Why just leave me in the dark? Did he post any code, anything aside from the two pictures? I'd like to know how he did it.
Wait, did I miss something? It looks like you can't bring up the task bar whilst in an app. Once you take your cursor off the taskbar while in an app, it disappears, and the only way to get it back is to go back to desktop?

I think that was implied as a bug rather than an intended feature. Like the top title bar kept freaking out in the metro apps.
If your on Windows 8 and upgrade to Windows 8.1 do you lose your personal files? Cause I wanna do it on my work PC

Nope, didn't change a thing for me.
Could anyone point me in the right direction for finding a good icon pack? I want some new folder icons mostly like for music, documents, etc.
Why on gods green earth did my computer just restart SEVEN times in a row just to update itself???
Why on gods green earth did my computer just restart SEVEN times in a row just to update itself???
Because it's Windows.
I installed 4 Roles on my Windows Server 2012 R2 at once.
It required 5 separate reboots.

Fuck logic
i wanted to set up ftp access on a windows server machine
in the end shit didn't work, permissions were fucked, and i just installed filezilla server
Has a recent windows update fucked the task manager or something? I'm getting no live feedback at all from it and it says I have 100% CPU utilization just on desktop.. my pc doesn't feel sluggish or anything either, just feels as fast as usual.
Nevermind fixed it.. go to view > update speed > high, mine was set to 'pause' , no idea how this happened :|

Maybe.
I've got at least 10 PCs that I would like to upgrade to Windows 8
1. Is it even worth upgrading old XP computers to Win 8 or would it be better to purchase new PCs
2. What is the cheapest way to bulk upgrade to Windows 8.
Likely if they were running XP, then they're old pieces of crap so you'd probably just want to replace them.
Specs?
Oops, I forgot to but them in my first post. They're all Pentiums and have 2 GB DDR2. They're not being used for anything that requires more power though. The biggest reason we want to upgrade to Windows 8 is because it manages networking and drivers a LOT better than XP. Will Windows 8 be lightweight enough for them?
[editline]20th February 2014[/editline]
I forgot to add that only 4 of the PCs have Pentiums/2GB. The rest I'm just not worried about since I know they can run Windows 8 fine.
I'd say do it then. The only thing I'm iffy about is the RAM but if you're not doing much with them besides light office work you're probably good. Your main difficulty will be adjusting to the UI unless you use some metro replacement

Personally I use Windows 8.1 on my main computer. And everyone using these PCs already has experience using Windows 8.
It seems the cheapest way is to do Microsoft Volume Licensing. Luckily since I was homeschooled my mother can use the private school credentials to get academy licensing.
Hey guys, so I was debating on getting a tablet or a laptop. I sold my old laptop a few months ago and wanting to replace it with something a little bit better. Now, as far as tablets go, I don't want an ipad, and I'm slightly considering an android tablet, but I don't particularly like android. Which leaves me with the Windows tablets. I like how it looks and flows with everything, and I've heard you can put normal windows games on them, hook a keyboard/mouse and play. Is this true? If so, how well does it work? I mean, I don't want to play a lot of games on it, but I like the idea of playing very minimalist windows games on the tablet when I want to, and I like that the windows tablets come with USB 2.0 slots, which seems like it would be incredibly handy.

If you want to run traditional applications, you need one that has a normal x86 based processor, like an Intel i5. For example, if you wanted a Surface, you would need the Surface Pro 2. It can't have a mobile ARM processor like the Tegra's in the cheaper Surface tablets.
Though, I'm sure your not looking at the Surface specifically because you didn't specify. But that is the clear distinction between Windows 8 RT and regular Windows 8 tablets.
Well, I'm purchasing it with my credit I got on Newegg. So I'm limited in where I can purchase it.
[editline]20th February 2014[/editline]
And they have a small selection of Surface tablets.
