Windows 8 - "8" because cats were taken and dog races don't sound as intimidating
I'd say do it then. The only thing I'm iffy about is the RAM but if you're not doing much with them besides light office work you're probably good. Your main difficulty will be adjusting to the UI unless you use some metro replacement
As long as you stay away from Chrome, 2GB of RAM should be fine.

This is only my second one..
If you want to run traditional applications, you need one that has a normal x86 based processor, like an Intel i5. For example, if you wanted a Surface, you would need the Surface Pro 2. It can't have a mobile ARM processor like the Tegra's in the cheaper Surface tablets.
Though, I'm sure your not looking at the Surface specifically because you didn't specify. But that is the clear distinction between Windows 8 RT and regular Windows 8 tablets.
Well I guess I should backpedal here, is there a difference between the Microsoft windows 8 tablets and other branded ones? Like Asus, Lenovo, Dell, etc... I didn't think there was, and I preferred the other brands because I can actually see what sort of specs it's running. The Microsoft tablets on Newegg and their website don't specify a whole lot.

I was hoping for an anti-Windows 8 thread, because I think that Windows 8 is the Windows Vista of modern times.
wrong
its not even a pro windows 8 thread
its a windows 8 thread
your posts are terrible and your opinion is immature and wrong

Don't worry to much about RT, there are only three Windows RT devices right now: The Surface RT, The Surface 2 and the Lumia 2550.
http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/products/surface-pro-2
Scroll down and click the "See all specs (+)" button.
The biggest difference between the surface tablets and third party ones is the build quality. The build quality on the Surface 2 is something that most tablets or laptops don't even compare too.
I would choose the Surface Pro 2 over any third party tablet, but that's my opinion. Ultimately the decision it up to you.
-snip: Yep, dumb. My mistake.-
Opinion are cannot be true nor false.
I stated a fact. The fact is is that I think Windows 8 is nearly equivalent to Windows Vista.
Please point to me where it says opinions can't be true or false?
Here's my opinion on your opinion:
Windows Vista was hated not because it was unusable by design but it was riddled with technical issues. I have been running Windows 8 since the day the first developer preview came out and I have only ever had one issue that was a problem with Windows 8.
It's likely you were one of those people that said the iPhone was just a gimmick, that is if you were old enough to form such an opinion.

Whoops, I see my mistake, I must have been thinking of something else.
Now that's really gonna drive me nuts. What word was I thinking of?
I still dislike Windows 8 and Vista. Most of my issues are just with the UI, but I heard the Task Manager is a ton better.
I was indeed old enough to form such an opinion, but I did not. Still to this day I want one.
wait let me get this straight
so you haven't even tried windows 8, yet you're talking up shit?
"I stated a fact. The fact is is that I think Windows 8 is nearly equivalent to Windows Vista."
Haha. "The fact is that this is my opinion."
Well I can't fault you on that that. If you think Windows 8 isn't good, it's a fact that you think Windows 8 isn't good.
If you don't like Windows 8, then don't go into a Windows 8 thread. Stop posting in here if you're just going to talk about how much you don't like it.

Welcome to 99% of people that shit on Windows 8.

I have used it a lot at my friends' houses but I have never had the need to use the Task Manager because their computers are not shit, unlike mine. Generally when I use the Task Manager it is to end non-responsive programs or to end programs to boost my computer's performance.

This seemed like more fun.

That's what my friend, Tommy, was like until he bought it. He still hates it.

I have a question about how to make my picture icons show the actual picture, without opening it. Like a preview. It used to do this, but not sure what made it stop.
Also, I have an annoyance of too many folders showing under "This PC". If someone could tell me how to remove the folders from this section, it'd be great. Thanks.

go to 'Download Registry Script to Remove 6 New Folders from This PC in Windows 8.1' if you want to take the easy path, just tried it myself on my laptop which I hadn't done it on.

Go to View>Options>Change Folder Options
Make sure Display File Icon on Thumbnail is checked. If that doesn't work try resoring defaults.
Has Backup option been removed in 8.1? I can't seem to find it and File History is useless for my needs.
I just need some software that will back up specific folders to another hard drive and do it weekly.

Isn't that what File History does?
Isn't that what File History does?
Pretty much but I can't find the option to change what folders it will scan to backup.
Pretty much but I can't find the option to change what folders it will scan to backup.
I did a quick Google search and in typical Microsoft intuitive fashion, you must first create a library and then add the folders you want to back up to that library.
So if your risky enough there's a way to install Windows 8.1 Spring Update now.
http://bav0.com/get-windows-8-1-1-through-windows-update-right-now/
Beware, it can nuke your install.
The Spring Update seems like a mess to me. I'm glad they're making it more mouse friendly, but the route taken is the laziest one possible.
It's great that the start tiles now use context menus, but what about every other metro app and right clicks (which reminds me why is the start menu the only metro thing that you can scroll on by pushing the cursor on the end).
The search button is ok, but why is there a power button when there's the clickable user picture? Why make a new button when you could just add shut down etc. there.
Then there's this:

Like if you're gonna just overlay two different UI's at least make the taskbar flat like metro, it looks like you're emulating windows phone on an android device.
And that is my rant.

It's Microsoft, they have quite the impressive history when it comes to half-assed inconsistent user interfaces.
I need to install windows on my new ssd soon and I guess I should probably use 8.1 now. I've been using 7 for a long time and I really love it and I still hate pretty much everything about the new interface for 8. Is anyone using classic shell with 8.1?

Ugh, I was really hoping the metro apps would be just like a maximised window with the option to do that on. Instead this botched crap.
In case anyone was wondering about the surface 2 (not pro, RT) I got one a couple of months back for school, mainly to use with e-books and pdfs for classes. I must say this is a very convenient device. I got it with a touch cover 2 (typing on it right now). The battery life is great, I use it a bunch of times throughout the day to do general school tasks and read textbooks and I only charge it about once every 2 to 3 days. PDF support is great, the smoothest I have seen anywhere (I think it feels better than apple tablets). One downside as everyone knows is the lack of app support, even though 99% if website based services work find, I would love more native apps such as pocket or Gmail. Other than that its really a great general use tablet. Also it comes with the office apps so it is great for students. Also another downside is you can't run code on it (slightly annoying if you're in a computer or software program like me)
Anyone experience random freezes from time to time, where all the windows become unresponsive but you can still move your mouse around and you get that blue loading wheel?
You should check task manager for any fluctuations in CPU or Memory, usually a process making it hang
