should I format my HDD before upgrading from se7en to win8, why or why not

I don't see why it would be intrinsically necessary. If your Win7 install works fine, it should upgrade fairly seamlessly. Though if you get weird bugs and quirks, it probably broke something. In which case, do a fresh install.

I dunno. There's no particular technical reason to do it beyond the fact that there's a small chance of things fucking up.
However, I always do it. I like the feeling of a clean slate with a new OS, where you can sort of start from scratch. I dunno, it just feels way cleaner to do it. It makes all the new stuff stand out way more and makes it feel more new I guess.
my filesystem went corrupt so I'd be installing win8 on a fresh copy of win7 already
The surface pro 3 is a beautiful piece of hardware. God damn, check that thing out whenever you get the chance.
Well, my laptop came running Windows 8 so my desktop was the last of the Mohegan's running Windows 7.
My master boot record shit the bed and while I could have repaired it, 8.1 Pro was cheap enough through my uni discount that I actually couldn't find a reason not to get it. So now I'm installing 8.1 on my desktop and looking forward to using it on two screens

Was bored, spent some hours making custom icons for the start screen.
Most of them have normal (120x120) and wide (250x120) versions.
[editline]25th June 2014[/editline]
I can upload them or create more by request if anyone wants me to.
[editline]25th June 2014[/editline]
Folder of all my current icons, will expand as I create more:

A lot of those really clash with how Modern UI is intended to look.
nah i like them a lot
just because Modern UI is supposed to look a certain way doesn't mean you have to conform to its standards 100% of the time wtf are you talking about
A lot of those really clash with how Modern UI is intended to look.
I don't think there is a certain way its supposed to look. Thats the cool thing about metro.

I don't intend to stick to the flat style of official Metro tiles, that's just not my style.

No, there definitely is. But they said they're avoiding that style, so, it's fine, then.
God forbid my monitor displays more than 5 colours at a time in the start screen.
News for leaks about future versions of windows has blown up.

Okay so I'm having a really weird problem with my computer, and I think it's windows 8 related.
I'm using an ethernet connection right now, I'm plugged in, the routers on, the modems good, the internet works, but, in the bottom right hand corner, the internet connectivity logo shows 'No connections found'. But that's horseshit because I'm posting from this computer right now and I clearly am on the internet even if it doesn't think I am.
I've been googling this, but there's nothing similar to this i've found elsewhere.

I've seen this issue or similar on Windows 7 before, try SFC /scannow, chkdsk or rebooting incase you haven't done that yet.
This is more of a Windows 8.1 question, but since I haven't seen any threads dedicated to 8.1, I figured I'd ask here. Just recently, I found out that AMD is officially dropping driver support for Windows 8 forever because, in their infinite incompetence and retardation, they can't get the Catalyst 14.6 beta drivers to work on Windows 8 even though it's been functioning just fine for Windows 7 and 8.1 for over two months now. So if I ever want to update my video drivers again, I have to update to 8.1. This would be all fine and dandy, except I don't know how many, if any major bugs and glitches 8.1 has (such as tons and tons of people unable to get their network drivers working on 8.1 on release). I also don't know if upgrading going to affect any of my files, documents, currently installed programs, etc. I know I have an external hard drive lying around here somewhere so I can back everything up if needed, but any and all information on upgrading from 8.0 to 8.1 and any caveats therein would be thoroughly appreciated.

I was going to say this is earlier than expected but Windows 8 is almost already 2 years old.
ms needs to step it up anyway
started from the vista now the whole PC here
windows 8 seriously doesn't suck anymore but i'm definitely okay with the next entry in the series. i hope it's called something better than windows 9 because that sucks ass.

wasn't it about to be called "Windows One" or something like that?
Personally I don't think it's gonna be called Windows 9.
They are probably gonna put aside the numbering system.
I hope it does. We'll get to call it "Windows NEIN" if it turns out to be shit.

that looks photoshopped, mainly because the colour scheme is wrong in reflection to the desktop. however this is the intended look for threshold anyway (in terms of the start menu, not the colours)

Well the start screen and with it the start button use the metro colorization options and not DWM's so it makes sense.
