Windows 8 - "8" because cats were taken and dog races don't sound as intimidating

Correct. The tiles you see on your home screen are transparent 150x150 tiles, and it's not scaled like you think, so adjustments need to be made for the text to fit.

I prefer consistency.
I've decided that I'm going to take the plunge this weekend and upgrade (I can get it free from my school). Is there anything I should do on my lappy in order to prepare for the shift? Are there any apps/plugins/mods that I should get? Will anything stop working?

Nothing. Not really. Unlikely.

How will Win8 fare on a D430?
How will Win8 fare on a D430?
Probably better than Windows7

Specs seem rather okay right? Uses a U7500 1.06GHz processor, 2GB RAM and a 60GB HDD. It should run fine with Office 2013. Needs a new battery.
Oh yeah Win8 will run on that no questions asked. As a web browser/Office machine it's good.

Or replacement machine if my other is in repairs, if it plays YouTube fine in high quality then I guess I'll upgrade the OS from scratch. It needs WiFi, it only has cellular for some odd reason.
Yeah the X61 I got with similar specs runs YouTube flawlessly

Whats the maximum RAM your X61 can hold?
I haven't checked but I'd bet it has two slots so I'd imagine 8GB. Unsure if it's DDR2 DIMM or DDR3 but it's new enough to have SATA so I'm guessing DDR3

Eugh looks like DDR2, but it's definitely two slots.

And it's max is 4GB.
Yeah, which looks damn near 60 bucks off of Newegg. :suicide:
Ah well, the thing still runs fine with 2GB. It sucks not having a widescreen display and it's awkward especially with Metro but hey, who would've thought a 2012 OS would bring life into a 2007 system.
So I'm asking here because I can't seem to find a windows 7 thread, is it possible to resize specific icons on the desktop ? I know ctrl+mousewheel resizes all the icons, but I'm pretty sure I've seen someone resize a specific icon to a different size.
Made the jump, and I gotta say it's pretty nice. Spent some time messing around and I think it'll work out.
The only bummer so far is that now my function keys don't work (brighten/dim).
Does anybody know why themes aren't working at all? When I apply them nothing changes other than the wallpapers. I'm using UxTheme patcher.
I have been using it on my laptop to get the hang of this OS, but I think I might throw it on my desktop soon or later, but I need to know, how does Windows 8 work on games? Also, would I need to install my drivers or not? I like to know your experience. I have been using it for a while now, and I like it. But I don't know yet if it's ready to use on my desktop.
I use it on a desktop, it runs games flawlessly, better than they ran on Windows 7. The gestures on it are really nice to use using a mouse too. I'd recommend putting it on your desktop.

Sounds weird. This is usually intergrated actually.. Tried updating drivers related to keyboard?
anyone know of a good windows 8 laptop? needs to be pretty powerful too at a decent cost
define 'powerful' and 'decent cost'
also most new laptops'll be coming with Win8 now
What do you define as a Windows 8 laptop? Touchscreen? I think a cool idea right now is the Asus Taichi but it's also like $1400 and pretty huge. I would wait a bit until we start seeing some really cool laptops.

The Taichi has pretty bad battery life, though, and the second screen isn't much help apparently. The Dell XPS 12 is a better and cheaper solution, doesn't weigh much more either.

Well yeah, I'm just saying it's a cool idea. Asus' execution especially where tablets are concerned is pretty lackluster. The whole flippy thing with the XPS 12 has got to be a blast to play with though
The Asus tablet's seem to be one of best Windows 8 tablets i have seen so far.
If I had to choose based on build quality I'd take a Surface instead. Seriously, Asus' tablet build quality is literally that of a wet paper towel - and this extends to their laptops to some extent and to their Android tablets to the same extent.
What do you think about the Lenovo yoga 13? I like that you can turn it into a tablet.
It's not bad, but I'm not a fan of having the keyboard facing outward opposite the screen. Being a newer Lenovo product the plastics are a little more flexible too.
