Updated OP with more detailed explanation. In short, its a wall of text.
You just said HDMI doesn't have the bandwidth (which it does). Lossless audio isn't as bandwidth-raping as you make it out to be.
The cables may be capable, but the output isn't. And DRM is very likely to rape the quality for you anyways.

anything from HDMI spec 1.3a on is capable of outputting all of the audio and video. which is a fact. the new HDMI spec 1.4 cables are for sharing internet, HDMI control, and audio without having to have everything go into the audio receiver and only needing one thing hooked up to the internet, which is nice i guess if you want it to be piss easy. oh and HDMI 1.4 supports 1080p 3D (stereoscopic LCD shutter, anaglyph takes no special hardware whatsoever) at ~60 frames per second, 1.3b can do 30fps 1080p 3D output already.

DRM will not "rape" the quality, either. all DRM will do is give you a bitch of a time when you go to uninstall it or anything along the lines of disable it, temporarily or not. and if you do so, then you get 480p video rather than 1080p.
that's audio. there are maybe 2 (worth while) movies with 7.1(8-channel) audio.
The best investment I ever made was a Blu-Ray drive for my PC, and AnyDVDHD. This means you can rip movies you buy to your hard drive and keep digital copies of your 1080p movies. It's absolutely fantastic.
