I would also like to know the answer to this question, since most XP users have been waiting to do upgrade installs from XP to 7. :bang:
Most people who are sticking with XP on purpose I should imagine are clever enough to not try an upgrade install of Windows anyway
Fuck yeah, the new Auslogics Defrager supports the superbar, showing it's progress there. Plus, it has a defrag and optimize, which I guess can't hurt
im still sticking whit the old fashioned uber leet windows xp
Enjoy your fuckton of viruses and horrible 64bit support.
Enjoy your fuckton of viruses and horrible 64bit support.
XP is still supported by MS, he'll have just as many viruses as you do.
Of course, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to get them to join the Homegroup. Just the other day my main PC was able to see my laptop and I think I even remember it seeing the second desktop at one point, I can't think of anything that's changed since then :/
Have you tried making a new HomeGroup with the same settings as the last one? [editline]06:53PM[/editline]
XP is still supported by MS, he'll have just as many viruses as you do.
Technically, he'll have more since a majority of rootkits can't run under 64-bit Windows.
im still sticking whit the old fashioned uber leet windows xp
im still sticking whit the old fashioned uber leet windows 2000 or im still sticking whit the old fashioned uber leet windows 98SE
Have you tried making a new HomeGroup with the same settings as the last one?
Apparently that's not possible, once a homegroup has been created it gets "stuck" and there's no easy way to start fresh with an entirely new one. In my case I can't make a new homegroup from my desktop, it still thinks my laptop has created a homegroup even though I removed both from the homegroup and even disconnected the laptop from the network. I'm just going to say screw it, regular old folder sharing is more reliable and gives much more control than homegroups.
Just go to the HomeGroup Control Panel and make them all leave the HomeGroup. Then just make a new one. Could also try going under the "Advanced Options" and making sure all the settings are On.

[editline]09:02PM[/editline] Oh wait, I had forgotten to remove one computer from the home group :downs: Now it's letting me make a new one. I still don't think I'll bother with it, I don't use shared folders a lot to begin with. Regular sharing meets my needs.
XP is still supported by MS, he'll have just as many viruses as you do.
XP runs everything as administrator and doesn't warn you if something does try to run. That sounds sooooooooo secure :downs:
Hey guys, I can't figure out what settings to look for in win7. 1) When I press " key, it does not appear until the next key is pressed. Then both " and my letter appear. 2) Same for ^. 3) Pressing ~ to open console, does open it, but then whatever key I press it closes. When I open the console again, I see my letter that I entered with some weird markings, like ě or ő. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of those weird things?

That sounds sooooooooo secure :downs:
Thanks for pointing that out, it's not like I've known it for several years or anything. Won't really matter if you know what you're running, and use a good anti-virus for things that you don't even need to click to activate. Claiming he's going to get a ton of viruses just because he's running XP is pretty stupid; you could claim the same thing for people who are running Vista or 7 instead of Mac OS X or Linux. People have been (and are still using) XP for years now. Just because Vista and 7 came out doesn't change their level of protection.
Is there any real reason I should install the 64-bit version instead of 32-bit, assuming I don't have and am not planning on using more than 4 GB of ram?
64-bit drivers go through more rigorous testing. Most rootkits are incapable of running on 64-bit Windows. You'll be ready.
Is there any real reason I should install the 64-bit version instead of 32-bit, assuming I don't have and am not planning on using more than 4 GB of ram?
You should always assume you will use more in the future. You might not use more now, but eventually you need to upgrade.
Just got Win 7 installed. Pretty badass so far.
There should be a Linux Distro called Badass Linux or something like that. All the programs would be reskinned and have cool sounding names and there would be 300 epic wallpapers, and wallpapers from 300.
The only thing holding me back is that a small number of my devices don't appear to have 64-bit drivers.
i cant wait to get my new computer, then im installing it right away!
It's not. Once it gets past the "Copying Windows Files" step, the installation source is no longer needed.
I know I'm late, but I can say for sure that the DVD is accessed after the "copying files" step. I'm watching Vista install in a VM, it's in the "expanding files" step and the disc image is being accessed a lot. Doesn't look like it's accessed after that though.
hey, win 7 rules
Just installed Windows 7, really awesome.

You're most likely using the US International keyboard layout, instead of the normal one. It does those things
Trying to convince my brother to upgrade with a spare key I have from college. 'Vista is fine'. I loved Vista, but Windows 7 blows it right out of the water.
I'm having problems finding a driver for a school printer. When I looked at the HP list of printer drivers that my Windows 7 computer had, it had like all BUT the one I was looking for. Would I need the driver on the internet?

funny how windows 7 help threads are exploding around these parts of facepunch. Personnaly, ive had XP for years, then i got Vista, wich couldnt have sucked more donkeybollocks, then windows 7 came, wich wouldnt have any of the previous problems... *cough* yeah, right *cough* overall, im just tired with windows, and the fact that it double/triple/quad asks me if i wont to delete something.... oh, and BTW, my new MacBook just rolled in the door. Windows7 compared to Vista/XP is a top-of-the-line sleek OS, but compared to Mac, it looks like a dogturd with a little windows-logo on the top
funny how windows 7 help threads are exploding around these parts of facepunch.
90% of them are "do I need to backup everything before I install 7" or "will 7 work alright with my computer" or "should I get 7".
Allow me to answer those: "It's recommended." "Most likey." "FUCK YES DO IT."
My Windows 7 x64 keeps freezing my wireless usb card when I download something at above 300KB/s for more than 5 minutes so I went ahead and bought a Windows 7 compatible one (was using hacked drivers) and it still does the same, what the fuck.
