Will taking the steamapps folder I have in XP and just copying it over to Windows 7 64-bit work? [editline]05:21PM[/editline] I am guessing no but it is worth the question.
That's how I always back up my stuff. There is no 64-bit version of steam.
So yes?
So yes?
yes.
Alright, question. I have Win7 Home Premium 64 bit on my computer right now. I just did a fresh install, and don't have a product key. If I order the Home Premium 64 bit OEM from Newegg, can I just put the product key in and activate this copy of Windows? Or am I going to have to reformat?
AFAIK it should work. I'm pretty sure retail, upgrade and OEM all use the same discs.
Alright, will try it.
Does anyone know how I can get a list of which devices are set to "be able to wake up the PC from power saving mode" ?
I've experienced an odd issue with Windows 7 on both my desktop and my laptop regarding Aero... So basically, after a few hours use, both my laptop and desktop stop displaying the aero animations, such as minimise, or aero peek. Although not disruptive in any way, it's been drawing my attention for the past couple of weeks. I think it occurs after running Adobe After Effects CS3, Adobe Premiere CS3, Soundbooth - apps with that specific interface type (Photoshop CS3 doesn't cause this). Can anyone else verify this? Basically, after running After Effects CS3/Premiere CS3 etc., if you mimimise a window, it just disappears rather than gradually fading and tilting backwards, and aero peak snaps quickly between windows rather than fading between them.
Does anyone know how I can get a list of which devices are set to "be able to wake up the PC from power saving mode" ?
Mouse, keyboard, ethernet / wireless adapter. Maybe a few more unusual ones but those for sure.
Just installed Windows 7. What should I do now. I already installed all my apps I wanted.
Use it?
Use it?
oh you. :smug:
That's what i was trying to get across. Vista was not terrible and in every goddamn place I keep going to I see "Oh vista was shit but 7 is so much better!". The truth is that 7 deep down is still vista. This isn't bad at all, but most people ignore this fact and think that vista and 7 are complete unrelated. Windows 7 used to run piggybacked on vista a while back, there's no denying that they are connected.
Accually, if you look it up on Wiki, you'll read that Vista is the unfinnished version of 7. I THINK it was called Longhorn at that point, and when the "MyDoom" and "Sasser Worm" viri were running rampant on XP and previous Win OSs Microsoft had to stop and fix the issue, thats where XP SP3 came from. All the while of getting XP updated to combat the two viri of the year, the Win7 devs were told to just finnish it and called Vista, hence all the compatabilty issues so prevaliant in there. This is all just from memory, correct me if I'm wrong.
Accually, if you look it up on Wiki,
and lets all believe wikipedia now.
and lets all believe wikipedia now.
And like the internet guru you are, you know that Wikipedia HAS to be totally wrong. Here, have a box. [editline]06:00AM[/editline] My bad, I was wrong on some stuff. Let me correct this...
Originally, a version of Windows codenamed Blackcomb was planned as the successor to Windows XP (codename Whistler) and Windows Server 2003. Major features were planned for Blackcomb, including an emphasis on searching and querying data and an advanced storage system named WinFS to enable such scenarios. However, an interim, minor release, codenamed "Longhorn" was announced for 2003, delaying the development of Blackcomb. By the middle of 2003, however, Longhorn had acquired some of the features originally intended for Blackcomb. After three major viruses exploited flaws in Windows operating systems within a short time period in 2003, Microsoft changed its development priorities, putting some of Longhorn's major development work on hold while developing new service packs for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Development of Longhorn (Windows Vista) was also restarted, and thus delayed, in August 2004. A number of features were cut from Longhorn.
And Windows 7 isn't Blackcomb. It only had one codename before being called Windows 7 and that was Windows Codename "7".
If you want I'll give you an extensive explanation of Longhorn and Vista. I didn't get this title randomly.
Ya know, I think that would be REALLY good for the thread. Please, proceed. [editline]06:26AM[/editline] Oh, and this:
Blackcomb was renamed Vienna in early 2006,[13] and again to Windows 7 in 2007.[14] In 2008, it was announced that Windows 7 would also be the official name of the operating system.
[editline]06:26AM[/editline] So yes, you are right on the name.
WinVII
Lol, that orb is just floating up there like it does not care or something. Also, a Win Longhorn->Vista thread would be cool. WinFS (which was awesome, but the file arrangement change for the user confused most), the old UI (which actually sucked), and some other stuff like how WPF was used everywhere and finally the big reset. I'm sure you know a lot more about it than I do.

WinFS (which was awesome, but the file arrangement change for the user confused most)
You're thinking of Libraries. That's why they were removed in Vista right before Beta 2. However they now came back just as they were in WinFS/Vista.
the old UI (which actually sucked)
I love the old UI.
and some other stuff like how WPF was used everywhere and finally the big reset.
Indeed.
Hey Panda.
Howdy.
So uh, why was I rated dumb in my last post? On Vista's UI, I didn't really like how the Taskbar was set up. It just didn't feel right somehow.
So uh, why was I rated dumb in my last post?
Because this is Facepunch and people will rate pretty much anything dumb.
Because this is Facepunch and people will rate pretty much anything dumb.
Something tells me I should have realised this. [editline]12:35AM[/editline] Damn it! Whats the Picard facepalm thing again?

Well thats not gonna be easy to remember. :/
My XP laptop is completely chugging up because of god knows what, and I can't for the life of me find out why my hard drive is full. And my dad recently won a copy of Win7 Ultimate from a Visual Studio User's Group meeting. Y/N?
I never really liked the whole Libaries and Homegroups thing, but now that I have a few computers running 7 it seems like a really nice system.

As for that 7 copy, send it my way, I'll make sure it never sees the light of day.
