So apparently my student copy locked me out on my laptop. It runs fine on my desktop. The problem now is, it is deactivated, but gives me no option to activate it. It presents me with a black screen and "Windows RC 7600, Unactivated Copy."
How do I activate it without reinstalling 7?
I'm pretty sure this question, but I want to make sure. I had Win7 Home Premium 64 bit installed on my computer, without a product key. I ordered Win7 Home Premium 64 bit OEM from Newegg, and used the key to activate this Windows already on my computer. I read that OEM locks to the BIOS, so it's tied to the system it's installed on. Is the product key locked in, or do I have to reinstall for it to lock in?
OEM doesn't lock to the BIOS. It takes a survey of your hardware and if you make a lot of system changes then you have to reactivate / call MS.

Retail does the same thing, it just lets you activate more often before you have to call MS.
So I can use this product key again on this computer if need be right? Even when I reformat? (Which I do maybe 2 or 3 times a year.)

That's right, I think after a few months your activation status resets so you can activate automatically again, otherwise you have to call them up and read off strings of numbers to a computer.

What?
Hardly surprising. The five years between XP and Vista was not typical for MS, before XP their OS releases happened every 3 years or so. And Windows 7 came less than 3 years after Vista.
I just don't see the reason to release so soon.
Checkdisk still broken...

Question still stands. How do I reactivate it?
Can you do anything at all with the computer?
Can you do anything at all with the computer?
Nope. I get to the log-in screen, type in my password and enter windows. All I get is a black screen with the corner text about it being RC 7600 and not activated. I can't do anything. CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't even work. I just have to force shutdown. I've only used my key on my desktop and laptop (desktop presents no problems). Any suggestions on how to reactivate?
I think someone found out that you could press "Open Help". If you get into help, search for the command prompt, then you can press the link on that page to open it. Do "slmgr.vbs -rearm" from there.
This thread is not the same without Panda :frown:

Back when I ran Vista I had to call Microsoft to reactivate after updating the firmware of my DVD burner.
What the fuck was that about?
I solved the activation problem using Lego's method. Thanks.

I remember getting a whole new PC, everything new except for the hard drive, and when I popped the hard drive in, Vista booted just fine and was activated. :v:
How can I fix the font problem, it's all distorted. (64bit)

If you're talking about the Facepunch font problem, it's in the OP:

You can't use the same product key on multiple machines. Sorry.
Yes you can, I have.

Yes you can. Every person I've talked to has. Including members of my class that have it on multiple computers.
It isn't legal though. Just saying.
I don't know what's going on but I'm sure as hell not complaining.
