Make sure you disable Mobile Network. If you don't, even when your not doing anything, the phone will access data, and you might end up getting a heavy fee at the end of the month. I'm not sure how it would affect MMS though.

Did a small test, you can't send or receive MMS messages without mobile network enabled. Not saying you won't receive them without a plan, but you will run the risk of getting data charges. Like someone said, don't bitch about it if that's the case.
