Fuck me I'm tired. What should I name it? I plan on limiting it to 1 mb/s. I need a funny name so people will think its pretty fast and try to connect.
"Fibre connection testing" Or something similar. Extra kudos if you redirect all HTTP traffic anyone tries on that SSID to a site of your choice :haw:
Today, I had a computer logging devices at my school. Somewhere around 150 access points were the school's, and around 450 access points were logged in total. Over 200 devices were also logged. We also got expected results and the iPod showed up on the list (the original reason for doing any of this). Now comes the isolating and ass-kicking. :v:
How to redirect traffic? :haw:
Can't remember the exact details, but it SHOULD be related to DNSMasq under Services -> Services. been years since i've last used that feature myself though
What is the best/easiest router to install DD-WRT on?
On sale for $26: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166032 Works really well for me, I'm running Tomato. The main thing you need to do is clear the NVRAM once you have a custom firmware installed. That really confused me for a while.

My neighbors SSID used to be "Is God in your life?" so naturally changed mine to "Lucifiers Lair" They eithier hide their network or changed the name back to the default one
How easy is it to install?
Very easy to install. Just read the instructions and make sure not to step on the power cord during flashing :v:
Mines called "plz dont steal my internet".
Mine's called nikomo. WPA2 on. I used to have it as nikomo with no encryption. Why's the connection so slow? Look at connected wireless clients on router. Alessio-laptop. Look at network. He has entire C: drive shared. Deleted some files, renamed access point to "Alessio haista paska" which essentially means Alessio fuck you and turned WPA2 on.
Yay, I just bought a Linksys WRT54GL
Yay, I just bought a Linksys WRT54GL
Laptop has two mini PCI-e so I bought a second wireless card and antennae for about $4 off ebay (Atheros AR5BXB61, injection works ) but I'm still waiting on the antenna cables. Hoping to play around a little with wireless MITM attacks. My laptop also has a spare mini PCI slot so maybe I'll see what I can cram in there too for some extra fun. Also did a little walk around the house to see what kind of signals are around, lots of tasty WEP :ninja:
Well thats rather frightening. I was trying to figure out which neighbor would name his SSID MyLittlePwny, just to find out I'm being WAR driven. Greeeeat.
Ever find the teachers ipod?
Yea, keep us updated on your search for his iPod :3
Bleargh, pretty sure my Broadcom piece of crap doesn't support injection. I need to find a cheap Atheros wireless card that goes into my laptop's Expresscard34 slot.
Yeah we actually found his iPod, and he's learned to take better care of his stuff (not leaving his iPod on his desk when he leaves the room). It had some weird pictures of nuns showing off her boobs and some pretty weird ass music on it when he got it back. So if someone steals your iPod, they probably aren't smart enough to turn off the wireless. Then you just need the MAC address (he got his off a log on his router at home), and you should be able to find it. Even if he had added that software that finds it for you, the kid wiped the thing clean to get past the lock screen anyway.
So today, I drove around town for a few minutes with a laptop in the passenger's seat and let it poll all the 802.11 capable devices in range. While I'm sure several of you may not be interested in the results, a few of you may be. After reviewing the list that was generated, I was somewhat interested. My reason for doing this has a long story behind it, but mainly a teacher at my school had his iPod stolen recently. His idea is that he'll poll all devices that come within range of a laptop he'll have set up in his room and that he'll see it show up. I decided to test the idea by running a laptop around town for a few minutes. Mainly the results I find interesting are the number of unsecured access points plus some of the SSIDs that showed up. If this thread really is dull enough for nobody to care, just let it drop to the bottom, and we'll all move on. I polled almost 800 access points, and over 150 devices capable of connecting to these access points. After reviewing the generated list, I found that at least a third of the access points are open, and with internet available. While using other people's internet isn't the best idea, there are few places you won't find an open access point with internet, even in a small town, should you have some "emergency". The next thing I noticed were the SSIDs that I found. Many of the people use the default SSID on their access points. Many of them are something they could change themselves, 30 of them being "linksys" and other smaller groups like BELKIN, NETGEAR, ACTIONTEC, and the smallest being dlink at only 5. The largest group is those who are renting equipment from companies like Qwest, and very few have actually changed the SSID. There is about 100 devices on the list that fall into this category. Some SSIDs showed up that I wasn't expecting. Things like: PurpleMoose I'm hiding in your closet MyLittlePwny No Acces Here SecuredNetwork SpongeBob ShyFish Taco welcome to the freak show firebutt doghouse ShinyCat starfleet MEGABOB Big House Poop_Deck StargateSGX Pork and beans picklesjive Gunslinger TheDeathStar yup Goldfinger NotYours my favorite: fuckoffmyinternet7 and finally, one that caught me most off guard: Bureau of Piracy [editline]42[/editline] Another thing I'd like to mention is that many people had two access points running, one for personal use, and one marked as a guest access point with open encryption. [editline]42[/editline] Driving around with a computer generating a log of WiFi devices is called wardriving. There is nothing wrong with it, its just fun.
Fucker stole my SSID! I've used "Intl Bureau of Piracy" for a while now.
my neighbor's wireless network was "the death star" so we made ours "yavin"
Mine is just SpeedTouchExxxxxx. Can't remember numbers. All my neighbours have kind of same name, everybody has SpeedTouch. We had a Linksys WRT54GL too, but our ISP gave us that SpeedTouch ST780 so we could see cable TV. Has custom firmware provided by our ISP so it would show cable + internet. AND THE WIFI RANGE ON THIS ST780 IS SO FUCKING WEAK THAT IF I MOVE THE ANTENNA, MY SISTER IN NEXT ROOM CAN'T GET FUCKING WIFI! Also, I can't refresh my server list in games, the router will crash and reboot. And it will randomly crash when playing LAN. Oh yeah, I don't have it encrypted, neighbours have but I don't. And log doesn't show that anybody has connected so I am happy! Also, I thought that ARVUTI (translates to COMPUTER) is a neighbour, disabled connection. It was my grandparents laptop.. Meh, now it is OK, fixed that..
While trying connect to my network about a year ago I found this:

And then you remember your dad was named ian
A lot of people have been saying Tomato is a better choice over DD-WRT because it's much more stable. Should I try it out first?
Really, neighbour? Default AP name, default admin/admin login.

There's an android app for doing exactly this, named WarDrive. I drive with it running, and check the results when I'm back home. Got a total of 844 WiFi networks in the database, of which 52 are open.
Getting a faint signal on some dlink router, gotta give it a try.. Edit: Just told my mom to pick up a can of Pringles when she goes to the shop. Now I just need something that supports an external antenna.
