I've used Avast for a good long while, and it's fine for me. I'm real careful and I don't run into malware situations often.
Then I realized Avast's free software didn't include a Firewall, so I got Zonealarm.
Then I needed to do some file and folder work, only to realize the antivirus jumped the gun constantly, flagging "threats" and deleting extracted dll files I was accessing on arrival, as well as preventing their general movement and access by me. Didn't even matter when I disabled the AV, because the shadow process kept working behind the scenes deleting anything that looked at it funny.
I must ask, paid or free, what security package is ideal for someone that prefers the program to run its decisions by him first, and perhaps, doesn't deliver any bad blows to performance or memory usage?
I really like Kasperksy, you can get a key for fairly cheap on ebay.
I would personally recommend Microsoft Security Essentials, running along-side Spybot: Search & Destroy and Malwarebytes: Anti-Malware. I've had this set-up since before I can remember and I haven't had issues with viruses since like 2004, and that was because I fell for a trick on MSN Messenger.
I recommend the common sense security package. Combine it with something like MSE and a locked down browser (adblock, flashblock, ghostery, etc) then you wont get bothered any time soon by malware.
FYI: The default Windows firewall is all you really need if its just going to sit on your LAN.
You could go with something like Comodo Security Essentials which has a tiny impact on performance. Keep in mind you should only use it if you know what your doing. Many people here dont like CSE because in most situations they dont follow good practices for setting it up.
If your really concerned about security and privacy then you could just switch to a flavour of GNU/Linux such as LinuxMint, Ubuntu, or Crunchbang.
