Alright so this is my second PC build. I have a 4790k i7 processor and 16 GB of RAM with a GTX 780
Issue is that just yesterday I turned on my PC and for some reason nothing loaded as fast as before (I used to have a 10 second boot and it'd take at least two minutes to boot all of my startup applications).
The only thing I've downloaded recently is GTA V from Steam (that took up 130GB and I have 600GB left on my hard drive.)
I'm currently running a scan using Kaspersky just in case but it's so slow. If I try to open any application, it'd take 2-10 minutes and usually freeze my whole PC for 5 minutes. This includes even trying to open Windows Explorer.
I have loaded it up in Safe Mode and everything is fine there. Everything loads instantly and theres no lag. I'm going to guess that this issue is software related. Anyways, I just need some ideas as to what could be wrong.
I suggest checking the startup and services tabs of msconfig. Look for anything out of the ordinary (programs you don't use, oddly named entries, bad or temp paths, etc).
If you can during startup, open Task Manager (ctrl+shift+esc), go to the Processes tab, click "Show processes from all users", then click on the CPU column to sort from most usage to least. From there you can look at what's hogging your CPU.
If it isn't the cpu, go to the Performance tab of Task Manager, click on Resource Monitor, click on the Disk tab and sort the Processes with Disk Activity by Total Activity. You can then check the processes that are accessing the disk the most and see what files they're touching.
Should the UI lock up during startup, you can boot into safemode and create a Startup shortcut to Task Manager (C:\Windows\System32\taskmgr.exe). If you really want to get into the nitty-gritty, you can use AutoRuns and Process Explorer by SysInternals.
After looking at my processes and memory usage, it seems that there are three main high prcoessor users which are System, my antivirus (although I've never had a problem with it and this only started two days ago) and svchost. I believe svchost could be the culprit since it's known to cause memory leaks and I did install several windows files when I downloaded GTA V. Possibly the issue?
Possible. You'll need to find out what service is using that instance of svchost (rightclick on it in Task Manager and select "Go to Service").
I'd also recommend looking at what files System and your AV touch. If those files are being used heavily, they may be the culprit.
