yea, my college is having students purchase laptops by January, but they're HP only (first PC I would have ever owned). so I'm selling MacBook once the laptops are in and waiting for the next refresh to see what happens. I'm hoping for a Mac Mini with a dedicated gpu or a cheaper mid-tower Mac Pro but that's probably not going to happen, otherwise I'm getting a MacBook Pro.

we were in the studio yesterday (I was directing), all the graphics were done on a MBP and cut into the recording live (I had to cue them in) so maybe this is what they are referring to rather than post processing.

It was rumoured that the White Macbook was due to get a total design change. Probably in 2010 though. Also, I can see the mini getting a speed bump or acquiring the arrandale processors. Maybe a new GFX card and the option of a SSD...

I think a price drop + design change would be a real winner for apple. The macbook pro probably comes over as really expensive to people. (que windows fanboys ranting about how everything apple is expensive), and if they manage to deliver a cheap macbook, that would be cool.

Don't think a design change is possible (they just switched to unibody...), but cheaper? Possibly.

Wow, didn't realise this thread kept going, must have lost it. I'm personally looking into media mostly and internet browsing, nothing too intensive, been looking at a macbook which with my new college discounts I could get for around £550-600. I love the software ans the OS of a mac so is it worth paying extra for and using it as a netbook or wait it out and get a nice mac pro or equivelant this time next year? Or even both just delay the mac pro by a few months. My laptop is dying fast so need to get a netbook soon anyway.

they said when they first introduced the unibodies, they were keeping the white macbook because it was their bestseller.
I'll have to order from the apple site but logged in at college, I'm going to wait until october to get one, because I'm assuming/thinking there will be a refresh at some point.

Yeah, rumour has it that they were gonna do a small spec bump. I wreckon they will in the coming months then maybe incorporate a new chip next year. Core 2 Duo is getting kinda outdated now...

If they don't, you can still get some money off by using the education discount on apple's website. You just need to be connected to your university network whilst buying it.
I also heard you get a free discount if you're logged into GSX and access the Store at the same time.

It's quite difficult to understand if you don't follow apples releases, basically;
White/Black Macbook (13 inch) + Completely silver Macbook Pro (15 and 17 inch)
Then it went - Unibody Macbook/White Macbook (13 inch) + Unibody Macbook pros (15 and 17 inch)
Then - Back to white macbook (13 inch) + Unibody Macbook Pros (13, 15 and 17 inch)

i don't think so. it's usually done as a percentage, so he probably means 500 off of the price of the 17 inch version
let's say that costs 1800 if i remember right, so that's near enough 25 percent.. so the base model would cost just over 600
