Whats the best anti-virus? Microsoft Security Essentials won't install for some stupid reason. I need an alternative.
Whats the best anti-virus? Microsoft Security Essentials won't install for some stupid reason. I need an alternative.
You're running Windows 8. You're fine. To clarify, MSE was integrated into Windows 8 as Windows Defender. That's why you can't install it. If you're still concerned with security after that, I'd grab Malwarebytes as a backup to MSE/Defender.
You should check the grounding on your house/fuse. If an HDMI cable creates an spark when touching an grounded element on your computer, then it's most likely that the power socket your computer is connected to is grounded wrong. I experienced this myself, and some days later my GFX card died.
Oh man now I'm scared. Not sure what to do about this, cannot afford a new card. Twitter, Runescape, etc. [editline]14th October 2013[/editline]
I've been getting emails off and on about people trying to access my stuff. Shit fuck, lets hope this works. Thanks anyways, bud.

If they're just emails, and your accounts are fine, then don't worry about it. Someone's probably just trying to hijack your accounts, but the email verification's stopping them. That happens from time to time. [editline]14th October 2013[/editline]
I've been getting emails off and on about people trying to access my stuff. You'll want to grab the Norton Software Removal Tool, I think they keep it on their website.

I changed all my passes just incase with the on-screen keyboard and doing a full scan now with Defender. Appreciate the help and the tip for the removal tool.
Oh man now I'm scared. Not sure what to do about this, cannot afford a new card.
You can check your grounding with an multimeter. Set the meter to voltage (At AC mode above 230v). Place the two leads into the two powerphases (Neutral and phase) (It should read 230-110v depending on your country). Then take one of the leads and put it in the ground phase. It should now read 230-110v or Less than 10v. Do the same with the other phase. One should be at 230-110v and the other should be at less than 10v. If both is at 230-110v, both is at less than 10v or anything between then you got an problem with the grounding at that socket. Edit: Remember to check both the monitors socket and the computers. As the problem is most likely that one of them is grounded wrong, and the other released the power resting over the ground onto the other device.
Alright, guys. Quick question: I want a small-ish, cheap-ish laptop for web browsing (plus YouTube), word processing, and general Linux hackery. <$600 11-14" IPS(!) display 6hrs battery life SSD (can be tiny) or 9mm drive at least 4GB RAM low-end Haswell Does such a machine exist?

My father has an MM so I'll check tomorrow.

Certainly it would access the internet from time to time. That or you can get a list of recently-modified/created software on your computer, and look for anything suspicious, or acting like system files or something, unless they included some date-changing script for the file. And as far as I know know, "Accessed" time is completely useless. Defending is as easy as hacking, given a person's vulnerability. (I had a long discussion recently, because someone masked a desire for information on security with obscure questions about hacking alternatives, which revealed how easy certain methods can be, both -- they wanted to know if they could track a file's usage across multiple computers, and through its lifecycle :v, completely innocuously, I thought they were serious because they had some private information that only needed to be seen by a select few, who weren't suppose to know the file was being tracked -- my conclusion was yes, though you would have to sneak something in -- get numbers of computer downtime, wait for a lull, run a silent application; but tracking on the receiving end isn't so bad, I should write an application, that you'd use in a locked directory, or run off a CD, hah, that would stream information to either an email, or server).
What's a good free program for tracking lost laptops? So I don't have to worry about someone jacking my laptop.

Alright so I want to get a PS3 and put it in my room and hook it to my PC monitor but it only has VGA and DVI, are there any good HDMI to DVI adapters out there?
Do you have optical out? Else it's gonna be a bit expensive.
No but I have a USB headset that I've tested on PS3's before that I'll be using for sound.
How about Prey? http://preyproject.com/
Perfect thank you so much.
Would anyone recommend this laptop? http://amzn.to/17skHpp I'm going to be using it for Gaming & College stuff, but if there's a better laptop that's around the same sort of specs but same price/lower then I'd appreciate your help.

(since you shouldn't have more than one AV)
Does this mean I should uninstall my other AV program? (since you shouldn't have more than one AV)
Defender automatically disables itself if you've got another AV installed. You're fine.
My .dllhost.exe is infected. If I reinstall W7 from the disc will it erase whatever is on my SSD and HDD?
My .dllhost.exe is infected. If I reinstall W7 from the disc will it erase whatever is on my SSD and HDD?
If you do a clean install, yes. How do you know your dllhost.exe is infected, though?
If you do a clean install, yes. How do you know your dllhost.exe is infected, though?
It's running in my processes and using a bunch of memory from the computer, slowing it down. Oddly enough it's not in my processes anymore but I'd like to be sure.
It's running in my processes and using a bunch of memory from the computer, slowing it down. It's pretty common for it to have high memory usage, if another program is pulling a lot of data through it.

I just assumed it was infected because one of the suggestions on google is "dllhost.exe virus".
Oh alright then. I just assumed it was infected because one of the suggestions on google is "dllhost.exe virus".
Yeah, it does look like a virus... If you're using last decade's definition of a virus. Typically, a modern piece of malware can run in the background with absolutely nothing that would tip off the user. Just running, silently, and skimming your credit card details. But you're probably fine. Can't hurt to run a Malwarebytes scan, though.
i need to ask a small favour of this thread could someone reccomend to me a laptop relatively capable of basic video editing with Premiere. Preferrably under £950, but i can possibly stretch a little if it's worth it. What i want in a laptop (optimistically) A high DPI screen. At most 15", as i'll be carrying this around most days. 8GB of RAM, capable processor and GPU for video editing and not as a requirement, light gaming.

They're pretty capable machines, high pixel density, and they come at minimum 15".

[editline]16th October 2013[/editline] also, rMBP's come in 13" too.

Although I'd like to say that my late 2011 MBP's still running smooth as the day I got it. They're really nice machines, if you've got the cash for 'em. Alternately, I hear Lenovo has some pretty nice budget stuff. Maybe look into their consumer lines?
