Thanks! <3
Wasn't sure if it should be posted here or in the Tech Support section, but, well, my dad's computer, running Windows XP SP3, has gotten the lovely AFP UKash ransomware, and he wants me to fix it.
I want to boot it to safe mode, backup the files he wants, and wipe it and start anew, but he's insistent on fixing it without such measures.
So, here's what I plan to do.
I'm bringing down a clean USB drive with Microsoft Security Scanner, Hitman Pro, Malware Bytes, Rkill, CCleaner, HiJackThis and information on all potential registry entries that I've been able to find the devious little bastard may be hiding in.
I plan to (with the computer in safe mode) run MSS first, then follow up with MalwareBytes, Hitman Pro and RKill, just to be gratuitously prepared. Then I run CCleaner and follow up by going through the registry to see if it missed anything.
Haven't really used HiJackThis before, but I've been recommended to bring it along.
Any recommendations for what else to bring along?
I believe MBAM would really be about all you need, RKill I suppose as well if the ransomware boots inside of safemode as well.

The hitman pro bootable worked really well for me last time my brother got ransomware
I need to cache some information from an API call, what method of caching would you guys recommend?
I usually do a flat file, but I want to try and move away from that.

Without knowing anything more about how your shit is set up, I'd say memcached, I've never used it but I've seen people use it for some bigger projects.
Apparently my piece of shit generic power supply doesn't have a 6-pin adapter, so I can't put in a 7770. So, my question is, should I get one of these and risk this shitty PSU blowing out, or settle for a 7750?

Don't most cards come with those kinds of adapters anyway?

I've never had to buy a new card, so I wouldn't know.
Edit:
"Included accessories: DVI to VGA Adapter, 6-pin to 4-pin Power Cable"
Just ordered the 7770.
I'm trying to get rid of this virus that is redirecting certain links and creating popups. I've already ran Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, and Hitman Pro. Any other recommendations?
Have you tried nuking it from orbit?

Check your registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and delete any registry entries you don't recognise.
In short.
My parents got a new modem that have wireless in it and asked me if there was a reason to keep the router or if I should get it when I move after Christmas.
We now use Internet - Modem - Router - Computers.
So is there a good reason to keep it? I'm not THAT good at network so.
Which brand of R9 280X is the best value that still includes dual DVI ports? Please don't say Asus because I really don't feel like paying as much as that.
Sounds like Coil Wine, could be PSU, GPU, or mobo. Not really much you can do about it.
No it's an actual sawtooth frequency that comes from my computers internal speaker.
Another dumb question: Would an FX-8350 suit my needs if I'm going to be doing gaming and basic video editing and rendering (I'd be using the GPU for that anyway)? I'm hoping to bring down the price a ton so AMD seems like a good option.
If it's not conflicting or creating problems I would just leave it as it is. Then just remove whatever you need whenever you need it for moving.
My network consists of 2 routers and 1 modem plus some custom DNS routings so I can control traffic to stop certain people who don't pay me for usage and stop people to going to certain websites(I'm a fucking tax man for this - the devils advocate of you pay me for internet). It makes your network more flexible having it this way in my opinion.
Sounds good to me. My father wanted to know if it has less security when not using a router. Like when he does stuffs online with the bank he want to be safe. But all the other with stop certain websites he does not care about, it's more that he want to be safe.
So no "real" safe loss in safety if he/we remove the router? Of course he has firewall and antivirus on his computer.

Anything I should change?
And maybe 16GB of 1600MHz RAM

It should be noted that the router is the thing that makes the wireless network. If your computers are wireless, you're gonna have a bad time without the router.

Ended up with that.
(Looks like I'm eating noodles for the next 2 years.)

Yeh, this is actually my biggest gripe with Windows programs, that fucking box. So inconsistent, and entirely pointless. Even the OSX Photoshop has an option to use the default OS navigator. I wish they would all use the same one, with the editable URL bar.

It should just stop existing.
It would be grand if it was possible to get it away
Is a Nvidia Geforce GTX 760 a good graphics card?

Most likely, it'll get underclocked to 1333MHz I believe though but it'll work.
Don't know if anybody else was having trouble with this, but this was pissing me off for months now and I found the solution. If I had Skype open and closed the window, it would still reappear as an open window when I alt-tab. You go to tools > options > advanced and disable "keep skype in the taskbar while i'm signed in". Skype will still be open and you'll still be signed in, but you won't accidently open it if you alt-tab. Hopefully this helps anybody that has had a problem with this or just as an FYI.
Say i've got a 7.1 set-up and windows configured for it, but my game only uses 5.1 surround. Will the side-speakers be muted or a merge between the front and back speakers?
I'm asking because i'm using CMSS-3d on headphones and have to decide between 7.1 or 5.1 on windows setting. If it uses the side-speakers, everything will be fine, as there won't be sudden jumps between front and back where 5.1 would be properly treated.
Anyone know?
