A 780Ti is definitely going to be helpful for running games maxed-out at 1440p. Even with that, you're not going to max out every game, but 1440p is definitely worth it.
For what it's worth, I game on a 1440p monitor using just a 6870. I max out most old-enough games (UT3, max settings with forced 4xSSAA+8xMSAA, still >60fps), and even relatively intense games look good (BF3, medium-high settings, FXAA only). And you can *definitely* see the difference between a game running at 1080p and one running at 1440p - there's about twice as many pixels, total, and with the higher DPI on 27" 1440p screens, you don't have as pressing a need for antialiasing anyways.
so is the 1440p really worth it when on some games I'll be turning the settings down and in about a year I'll be turning the settings down for a lot of games?
so is the 1440p really worth it when on some games I'll be turning the settings down and in about a year I'll be turning the settings down for a lot of games?
Yes.
On some games, you'll *already* be turning the settings down. To max out Crysis 3, maxed-out, at 1440p, you're going to need at least three 780s, maybe two 780 Tis.
Max settings should not be a criterion, because quite often max settings includes something that deliberately wastes power (I'm convinced this is the only explanation for "high-quality motion blur" on Crysis). The question should always be "will the game look good enough"? For most modern games, even medium settings looks great, and max settings does not really add all that much.
And honestly, high settings at 1440p generally looks better than max settings at 1080p. Unless you only care about the e-peen from "max settings", I would recommend 1440p.
Think of your resolution itself as a setting to max out. I could max out any game you throw at me on my laptop, if you let me set the resolution to 600x480. I could even dig up a monitor with that resolution if you want to insist on "native resolution". But that's obviously going to look like crap. 1080p vs 1440p is the same issue with a less drastic distance between the two. It takes more GPU power to run at 1440p, but it also makes things look much better. And if you're running a 780 or 780 Ti, you can't really claim to be maxing anything out if you're doing so at 1080p.
Can anyone recommend me some good quiet 140mm fans. I need some for my case and some good ones for my radiator.

I found these and they look like a good for being case fans but not sure for radiators...

Is there a way on Windows 8 to have different slideshows on two monitors?
So getting kind of tired of my desktop being cluttered, even though I find it really convenient. I know there are docks and shit but those tend to only allow a certain amount of icons. So I need something I can hide icons in.
Basically something like this:

What are the differences between certain nvidia graphic card brands? for example I'm buying a 780 ti real soon and I want to make sure I get the right one. I've got no idea what the differences are between brands. I've noticed some are custom cooled for example: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-235-EA
I'm pretty sure I want one of those unless someone has a reason to tell me otherwise. So yeah, I've gathered the best brands are Evga and XFX from a small amount of research. If anyone can tell me a good brand to go for that preferably has custom cooling like the one in the link that would be great. Thanks!

Anybody have a clue why my Linksys WRT54G v6 slowly increases my ping to insane levels after it has been turned on for 2 minutes? (going from 50ms to a inconsistent 120ms/200ms)
I'm currently experimenting with my second monitor, just to use it for movies and whatever while I browse and play some less intensive games. There is a small but noticeable performance drop, and I just have a little question.
Would my performance return normal if I just unplugged the monitor without changing any settings?
So recently I cleaned my keyboard and put the keys back exactly like they were. But the Enter key decides to go and do this.

This didn't happen before, and the metal rod under it is in the same place. It makes it very annoying to press the enter key. This also happens with the backspace key, but I think it's because I lost the little metal rod.
Any ideas? Yes the key is the right way. It's the Logitech G15 V1 if that matters. Wasn't planning on buying a new keyboard this christmas.
Has anyone had experience returning parts to Amazon (UK)? This mobo has been reporting temps of 113C when it obviously isn't considering it never changes and reports that on turn on, I moved my PC home and the ethernet port has partially died in the move ( it can get an IP address, but cant even ping the router? (Having to use my RJ45 to USB adapter for my surface to get online now ), and it doesn't seem to be able to power my headphones via USB.

My friend has this problem with second-monitor-plugged-in performance with his MacBook, and his FPS issues seem immediately improved when he unplugs his thing.
Personally, I feel like performance feels the same no matter how many monitors are connected, but I just restart my lappy when plugging my TV into it so that there's nothing lingering (since it's a 15 second process anyway).

welp, the bits that connect to the metal rod are missing. is there any way to fix this or am i fucked?
Fuck. I just noticed my headphones' cable has an absolutely horrifying cut all the way to the actual copper. Replacing them is absolutely not an option (they're $250) so I'm looking for some way to repair it. Because it looks like it will tear apart if any considerable force is applied.

cut the cable about where your fingers are, strip back, splice, solder, electrical tape and then heatshrink it.
I won't trust myself with that. I've done it before, but that was just an ordinary wire, I'm using and dragging around this cable constantly.
Just glued that motherfucker, I'll give them for repair sometime later.
epoxy + heatshrink
About 5 minutes ago my PC crashed with the error message (as far as I remember):
Asus power -xx- has detected -xx- and shut down your PC.
Something about it not getting/having too much power.
It has done this 2 times now including this one, last time was MONTHS ago and we had a huge storm outside, I blamed the storm and the power because the power cut off frequently around the neighborhood, but this time it just turned off. It's raining outside, a little windy but nothing much really. It also seems to happen a while after I boot Skype? I don't blame software or anything but it seems weird, maybe just a coincidence.
I haven't had any issues, also as said above the PC haven't done it other than one time and I'm 99% sure that was the storm. But I just want to be sure, what could be wrong? Should I be concerned?
What is a good program to take a screenshot of an entire page.
But not only an entire web page, but everything in a program too. So I don't need to scroll to take screenshots.
Quite a while ago i got a new laptop. It had problems from the get go, starting off with a motherboard that was fried and had to be replaced (Thank god for Warranty). Following that, i set up an Ubuntu/Win7 dual boot. After fucking around with that for a while i installed a game and attempted to play it. After jumping through several hoops i eventually took a look at the windows device manager. I found that the graphics card wasn't being recognised and so i promptly installed the drivers for it. Here's where it got tricky. I saw an error 43 for the graphics card. My dumb ass (I was drunk, not good) uninstalled the drivers thinking it was a driver problem. I then had the common sense to boot up linux and use the lshw command. The graphics card wasn't listed in linux (The laptop was linux native and all drivers were installed). So, either i've fucked something up, or earlier when the motherboard fried it also fried the graphics card, but the techs (or i, for that matter) didn't notice it as the computer was using an intergrated graphics chipset. Furthermore, occasionally when i boot(ed) from GRUB to win7, the screen went black and several small, vertical lines appeared. If i rebooted enough times it would bring me to a screen that would bypass the cop out. So i'm can really conclude that the graphics card might be totally busted, and i've been using the integrated chipset, or i've fucked something up royally. It's near christmas so the techs won't be open until after new years anyway. I'm planning to take it in regardless.
Hey guys. Quick question; my dad always picks up random bits of technology from places he works at (he's a commercial cleaner, the places he cleans always chuck out perfectly good stuff, he's got me monitors, computers and such that are all perfectly fine). He's just picked up two more things for me that I'm wondering if they would be of any use. The first is a Cisco air-rm1252g-a-k9 - some kind of wireless repeater I think? This one;
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/wireless/ps5678/ps6973/ps8382/product_data_sheet0900aecd806b7c5c.html
http://www.amazon.com/Cisco-AIR-AP1252AG-A-K9-Aironet-802-11A-Access/dp/B00113ZFEQ
And the second is a 100/1000 HP ProCurve 1700-8 switch.
Is the Cisco device good for anything?
So my laptop cooler has an go-through usb port or whatever, the problem is the port isn't covered properly, and I've been cut by it at least twice.

I'm not sure what's it's called but is there something I can get (or make) to cover up the sides of the port?

Why does Waterfox give me that when I try to take a picture with either fireshot or abduction?
Google isn't being helpful, try:
• Adding Waterfox's directory to your anti-virus' exception list (things you download would still be scanned)
• Reinstalling
They're on the dialog itself, so it seems likely you tried those already, but it doesn't hurt to reiterate.

I like evga for their warranty and the stepup program.
What's some good (free) software for screen capture?
I don't care for fraps myself.

Open Broadcast System, it has an option for local file recording.
Hey guys
I recently acquired a 4 speaker surround sound system that I plan to use with my desktop and bring to school with my when the semester begins.
The problem is, with my laptop, is that I only have 2 ports, a mic and a headphone port, and the surround sound unit needs 2 headphone jacks to function properly.
how can I repurpose the mic jack to act as a headphone jack? I am currently trying to download the realtek drivers but in the meantime I would appreciate some ideas
thanks
So for whatever reason I am now unable to exit out of Fallout 3 and NV when they crash, or any game for that matter. All the shortcuts I could once use to get out (windows key, Ctrl+Esc, etc) do not work and I have to restart my computer when they crash. Anyone know what's causing this and how to fix it?
