My computer warns me of low memory at about 55% memory usage, I have 8gb of ram. The RAM is not faulty, I tested it. It isn't the page file either.
Have you changed the system locale to Japanese? Control Panel -> Clock, Language, and Region -> Language -> Change date, time, or number formats -> Administrative -> Change System Locale...
All other japanese text works fine, same with the keyboard. It's just spotify that seems stuck with boxes.
My friend gave me his old router since mine is crap and he didn't need it. It works great but I need to access the router setup page since the network name is currently his last name (and that shit don't fly at my house). I tried the default username/password combos and they aren't working. It's a linksys WRT54G. Can I reset it physically? I have the router itself.

Use something small, like a pen, or an paperclip to put in there and press the button for around 10 seconds. That will reset all configuration of the router to the factory settings [editline]14th January 2014[/editline]
How do you install / move the OS onto a new SSD?
Its easiest (And often better) just to reinstall if you have the possibility. If not then you need to clone the disk over to the SSD. An tutorial of how to do this with Windows 7 here: Lifehacker.com: How to migrate to a solid state drive without reinstalling Windows
All other japanese text works fine, same with the keyboard. It's just spotify that seems stuck with boxes.
Oh, so it's just Google Chrome? Go to the top right menu (the one with the three bars) -> Tools -> Encoding -> Unicode (UTF-8). That worked for me.
My laptop was being a bit slow to remove a file so I opened up task manager to see if anything was acting weird. Turns out that my CPU% use isn't really matching up, any idea what could be causing this? [img_thumb]http://jesusfuck.me/di/XBDR/CPU_Usage_not_matching_up.png[/img_thumb] Image of what I mean. In addition to that my laptop seems to be underperforming. I got a I3 330M @2.13Ghz, ATI 5470M and 4 gigs of ram (32bit OS though). My gf has a pentium 4 running @ 1.86Ghz and a 5450M 4 gigs of ram and 64 bit OS. We were both playing Torchlight 2 but she was getting significantly better framerate. My drives are up to date. I was always under the impression that it wasn't performing as it should but now that I have something to back it up I figured it would be worthwhile to ask if anyone knows what could be causing this.
Update drivers, clean out startup items/services with msconfig, test your HDD for errors.
Already done those, I do have a hard drive problem but I'm replacing it end this week/next week. I do realise that that could factor in to the poor performance but as I previously mentioned, I've always been under the impression that the laptop hasn't been performing as it should and the hard drive problems are fairly recent. Also scans with MSE and Spybot don't bring anything up so I'm fairly sure my computer is clean.
Don't know if this is really related but here it goes. For some time I've considered moving to Windows 8(.1??) I've head good and bad things, and ups and downs which has lead me into a really hard choice to make, I asked a group of people and guess what it evened out so it's 50/50 yes and no's. Really hard to make the right choice here, so that's why I am asking you pro's for ups and downs and if the change is good. What I heard so far that Windows 8 doesn't have a start menu like 7, but then people say "Get Start8" and they argue about it's another process that needs to be run. So on, then 8.1 sucks and then stuff about Windows 8 have native ISO mounting. For my purpose, I game and educate in constructing websites, I know tools for the website thing is no big deal. My biggest concern is that I hear you need a live account from someone and then some say "just use an offline account" but then I hear it has 'limited use' whatever that means? It's like hearing the Windows vs. mac however this is.. Windows vs. Windows? :suicide: I really want 8 because of the start up time and IMO the flat design is an improvement, dont kill me. But if it's technically bad, then I'd rather not lose all my programs and game installs just to see if I like it. What should I do here? Help. :v:
Windows 8 is a solid operating system, and universally everyone who claims its technically bad can't actually provide a reason, they just whine about the interface. [editline]15th January 2014[/editline] Also my friend has been running her Win8 computer entirely powered by local accounts and hasn't been stopped from doing anything. And she's a fair bit of a power user.
windows 8 owns, and I use an offline account and haven't noticed anything different. The only thing I hate is the apps that open in metro are really shitty. The default picture viewer is incredibly shitty. The improvements (file transferer thing, windows powershell, performance improvements) are worth it over the disadvantages. GFWL games can be annoying to get working too.
Windows 8 is great, I use it with Start8. Start8 only uses like 1mb of memory so no issues there. Windows 8 in itself requires less resources than 7 so it ends up running faster either way. Offline accounts are fine if you don't plan to use the metro stuff which sucks for the most part anyway.

But what's the hate with 8.1 from 8?
I, too, like some of the stuff that Microsoft put in Windows 8. Things are somewhat easier to find in the Start menu IMO. Also, Windows 8.1 let me boot to the desktop, so it's like I'm using Windows 7 all over again (other than the start menu). It's incredibly faster even on slower systems, too. So I'd say it isn't a bad idea at all, particularly if you have a slow computer.
Is buying a 2560x1440 moniter from Korea still the cheapest and best option of getting moniters that size? If so is there any suggested Ebay sellers / sites of them ( Delivering to the UK )
Is there an automatic (NOT hotkey) way to disable my second monitor when launching a certain process (e.g. Fallout NV)?

Spent a life saving on this badboy and I thought about getting windows 8 instead of an SSD since the boot time should be massively increased!
This may seem stupid, but would my USB flash drive get damaged if it got water inside of it? There won't be any power going through it until it is 100% dry, but will anything on it be damaged not from a short circuit, but water damage in general? As far as I know everything on a flash drive is solid so no water will be absorbed.

Pretty good odds it'll be fine, as long as it's not too much water, not for too long, and wasn't saltwater or something.
I haven't used it in about 6 months and when I got it out of my drawer it was really sticky like something had been spilled on it a long time ago. It worked and I wasn't too worried about it, it's just cleaning it off was what I was wondering. Anyway I've used a damp cloth and it seems to be okay now, although I'm not gonna plug it in until I know it's totally dry.
Is there a way I can check the health of my hard drive? What kind of transfer speeds should I be getting? Recently it seems like if I do anything that even remotely involves a lot of file transferring, my whole system will slow down. For example I've got a couple of large ~5gb files I'm extracting at the same time now (WinRAR) and even the text I'm typing into this box isn't updating instantly. [editline]16th January 2014[/editline] Also I've took a uSATA drive out of a broken laptop to save some files, I've put it in an enclosure that allows me to connect it to a desktop computer (it usually doesn't have the standard SATA power connector). Is it a good idea to use it as a boot drive or are uSATA drives quite slow?
Hey guys. I havent been knowledged about the PC hardware world recently and I'm thinking of buying myself a good laptop. Any brand I should look at? Last time I was told to avoid the likes of Dell and Vaio and get something like a Toshiba or Lenovo instead. But then recently I heard Lenovo was going down the shitters? I'll be using it for college/university stuff which means it needs to be portable but I would also like to at least play games on it. I also don't really have a budget limitation as long as its reasonably priced.
ASUS/Lenovo your best bets
I want to install linux on a laptop of mine. I don't know what distro to spring for, but I want it low profile and small. Laptop is garbage specs, s939 single core, less than a gig of ram. Any suggestions?
I want to sell my old notebook because I'm not using it anymore. It's an Asus N56VZ which I bought about 1 1/2 years ago for ~$1300. Specs: Intel® Core™ i7 3610QM Processor 8GB RAM 650M GT 750GB HDD How much can I get for that now?
I'm having really bad problems with some games and sound. When I turn on some games, there is a terrible static/cutting noise that occurs, oddly enough it happens in games like Crysis 2, and L4D, but does not effect Battlefield 4. Checked LatencyMon and this came up Anyone know what to do? I can't play games very well with the terrible sound 20 minutes of SRIV yielded this
Is there a software that makes any old flash drive into a kind of, smart drive? Something like the SanDisk U3 software I used to have. It had a portable software manager.
http://portableapps.com/

Yeh I just tried it, but none of the apps are working, and a lot of them are just plain errors. Feels a bit outdated or abandoned, which is probably not true.
Never mind it is working properly now. Thanks.
