Something I've always wondered, how does a PC sort of 'see' a monitor? Like if I go into display settings or something, it says it right there something like Display 1 HP-P1230 or something How does that work? I thought the vga simply fed it a signal, but in order for something like this the monitor its self must be sending the vga information also just curious....

I thought the vga simply fed it a signal, but in order for something like this the monitor its self must be sending the vga information also just curious....
The monitor does indeed have a way to signal back to the computer. With a VGA connector, five pins are used for computer->monitor signals, four pins are used for monitor->computer signals, and the remainder are return, ground and power connectors. When VGA first came out, the four pins simply selected one of seven predefined monitors (of which only three were actually defined - monochrome, color, and "HD color" (1024x768)). That's obviously completely useless, so it was replaced with something called DDC (Display Data Channel). On a VGA connector, it reuses the old pins, but DVI and HDMI have pins carrying the same signal. It's actually a small serial connection, similar to the one used by computer sensors (like the CPU temperature sensor). DDC only defines how the monitor can send a signal to the computer, though. It doesn't define what it can say. That's left to a standard called EDID (Extended Display Identification Data). That message lets it specify: Manufacturer Serial number and week/year of manufacture Physical monitor size (in centimeters) Maximum resolution and refresh rates Gamma Color format Color space and a couple more things mostly related to analog signaling. You may have noticed that I didn't mention anything about DisplayPort. DisplayPort does not use DDC. It still supports EDID, but it transmits that signal in a different way, using a two-way low-speed auxiliary channel. That channel is also used for things like HDCP, error correction and touchscreens - you can even run a USB signal over it, if your monitor has an embedded USB hub.
That should be fine, its a mid to high end phone.
i can go on tinychat with it right? i held it today it's awesome. it's got a fuckin video chat cam and everything. also the screen is way bigger than the iphone's shitty little screen, and the keyboard is way better too. def getting it
My monitor seems to be laggy, for some reason whenever I try scrolling down webpages or using youtube there is a bit of stuttering, when viewing the gpu on Afterburner, doing so also causes the gpu usage to spike. Could it be that my 4670 is in a PCI-e x1 slot?

Hey guys, I've got a question for you. I've got a mid 2010 macbook pro with a faulty 330m, and apple refuses to repair it. It's basically impossible to play any sort of game. A friend of mine has a base alienware m14x R2 and is offering to trade so he can experience using a mac. The macbook has cosmetic damage, and the alienware needs a little love too. Would it be a good idea to trade laptops? Edit: The m14x was purchased in may of last year
What are the exact specs of the M14x? I can only find the specs for the high-end version.
These are the specs, the 330m in my MBP causes crashes when I play any sort of game, and that's what I really would like to do :P 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i5-3230M (3MB Cache, up to 3.2 GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0) Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit 14.0" High Def (720p/1366x768) with WLED backlight 6GB2 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz 500GB 7,200 RPM SATA 3Gb/s Slot Load Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) 1 GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 650M with Optimus™ 1 Year Essential Support 6.45 lbs Edit: I made sure he was aware of the problem, and he is alright with it
Go for it. Though the trade only really benefits you, but if your friend wants to do it then that's his choice.
Thanks for the input, I'm not the most tech savvy and needed a little help. I appreciate it!
What kind of games do you plan on playing on it?
What kind of games do you plan on playing on it?
I'm a fan of the Fallout games, Mass Effect 1-3, GTA4, and hopefully some ARMA/DayZ!
It should be able to play those pretty well, probably a mix of medium and high settings for GTA and ArmA, with those specs at 1366x768. It's basically like my Asus laptop but slightly upgraded and it plays all of those fine. My G53SW has a i5 2410M and a 1 GB GTX 460m with 8GB of ram with the same max resolution and it's powering though the ArmA 3 Alpha at medium/high with a 1700 view distance.

Even if it isn't perfect, I think it would still be a step up from what I have now. What Asus do you have?
Just edited my post lol.
Snuck those specs in under my nose XD I always liked the looks of Asus' G-series, and almost bought one a few years ago. I forgot all about ArmA 3, I hope I can get in on that too!
I have some Alpha keys still if you want one to try out the game once you do the trade.
That would be awesome! There's a possibility I may do the trade tomorrow, if I do I will definitely let you know.
Just PM me. They're for the Lite version so no multiplayer but you can play the 4 scenarios and mess around in the editor.
Well something is wrong with my laptop and I have no idea what. After a two-week period of no use I found that it ran extremely slowly in the OS and took minutes for programs to load (with 15 load times and 10 minute log on times, no joke). So then I try to repair the OS through an OS disk, but that doesn't work. Since I can't reinstall from repair dialog, i reboot the computer. I can't even boot from disk anymore- it goes through the whole process of the windows 7 boot screen (with the four colors coming together) but then simply hangs at a blank screen with a cursor. I even tried booting from a Ubuntu thumb drive and formatting the main HDD to no avail. Still no go. I have a trip to seattle this weekend and would really appreciate any help
Hey, it's better than nothing, at least I get to play. I'll shoot you a PM.

You'll have to replace it.

I have a couple of personal videos and I was wondering... How would I go about extracting the audio of one of the videos? I tried mkvcleaver and the like and they all gave me errors.
Man;39960667']So I just updated Samsung SSD Magician and its's telling me that I don't have AHCI enabled [t]http://i2.minus.com/iVQ7XMQbez3y4.png[/t] It is on in the bios and said it was on in the previous version, could it be a bug or by the Marvell controller that's in my motherboard? Also I did the OS optimization with the new version and it raised my sequential read/wright a little bit (may just be a coincident) Edit: Its an Samsung 830 128gb SSD by the way
Was AHCI on when you installed the operating system?
I will be unable to utilize a software RAID as I am using ESXi on my server. So I have to decide whether I want to: A. Have 6 400GB drives B. Have 3 1TB drives And in what configuration (1,5, etc) I want them in. Edit: Probably going to stick with 3 1TB in RAID 5.
RAID5 would be crap. Stick the 6 400GB drives in RAID10 and backup onto the 1TB drives IMHO.
Is there a way to draw lines in Adobe Acrobat?
I need something that lets me download a small section of a youtube video - I need to take the last 30 secs of about 50 different videos. Is there anything that would let me do this? I'd rather not download 50 30-minute videos for 30 seconds of each :(
Was AHCI on when you installed the operating system?
Yes, I double checked when I first installed it too as this is my first SSD Also heres a screenshot of AS SSD [t]http://i1.minus.com/ibadRSTRiW2huH.png[/t] Could it be that i's not recognizing the Marvell controller?
