I just recently bought an Alpenföhn Sella to replace the stock cooler on my AMD Athlon X2 5600+ and I had some trouble attaching the heatsink to the motherboard, which basically resulted in uneven layed thermal grease. Now my actual question is, with that fan and cpu, are 60°C okay as max temp under full load or should I reapply the thermal grease? It idles at 35-40°C, before with the stock fan it went up to 80°C at times, specially when rendering with blender.
Won't lie, I broke a whole system by doing that when I was a dumb kid (PSU overloaded, fried everything but the hard drive). But I left it running overnight, not for a few minutes (see: dumb kid). A few minutes of not having enough power is probably not a big deal, especially if your PSU can handle it. If it's still running fine, it's most likely not damaged, but I can't rule out some sort of long-term effect. And they probably added some additional protective measures since then to prevent that kind of error (I think it was an X700 that I was using when I fried it).
I accidentally started up my 780 with neither of the PCIE 6/8pin connectors plugged in and it displayed a message on the screen telling me that I needed to plug them in or the PC wouldn't boot. Was nifty, and if it's capable of displaying a message with none plugged in, I'd assume running it without one plugged in won't cause any damage.
My internet connection (using w8.1) has decided to kill itself and stay as "Limited". I tried everything to fix it but it just didn´t work. Anyone has any good solutions for that? Or should i go completely re-install W8.1?
Im using another vpn, but i have chosen visley, so there are no logs kept. Butikk my question Was if the network administrator could view my activity if using a vpn.
May I ask whom you chose? And yeah, aslong as its encrypted, you should be fine.

So i've been having problems with sony vegas where text won't appear and the screen will only show one grey box in the middle, yes i've checked the transparency and BG and yet i can't find any solution. i've seen others with this problem but they get no answer
So I'm thinking about asking for an nvidia gtx 750ti for my birthday, but my PSU seems a little iffy for it. My desktop has a 250W PSU, and if it helps, the motherboard is actually somewhat small (only PCIe x16 slot), and 3 SATA drives. Will the 750 run fine on the PSU, or do you think it might kill it?
What companies make good laptops?
Does anybody know of software that I can input the measured dimensions of a room to construct a 2D plan?
Does anybody know of software that I can input the measured dimensions of a room to construct a 2D plan?
SketchUp or AutoCAD can do that. SketchUp is free, AutoCAD is also free if you use your student account with AutoDesk.
What companies make good laptops?
Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, I think Lenovo's are good but never had one. Apple is always an option, albeit an expensive one, but their laptops are very good quality

Does anyone know how to fix a monitor that won't display input after it goes to sleep. I have to press the input button every time i turn it on or it goes to sleep to turn it back on. Mouse and keyboard are enabled to start up the computer from sleep, and all the drivers are updated.
I moved in with some people and I wanted to set up WiFi for their internet connection, it uses PPoE connection. Now the poblem is that the girl who has the contract with the provider will not be here for 2 months and the password for the connection is stored in an old-as-fuck TP-Link router without WIFi, I've got my WiFi router simply connected to it through the LAN-Port going into the WiFi routers WAN Port but I get major lags in gaming, youtube video-preloading loses connection and so on, not when I'm connected to the first router via cable. The logs in the routers show nothing Any ideas of a) how to read out that password stored in the router b) I have UPnP and RIP direction as well as DHCP enabled in the WiFi router - should I disable this?
The password stored in the router should be accessible via the router settings page. As for those settings they should be ok I think

Getting the password, and setting up the new router as the only one would not solve the connection-problems if that is so. Though, if you still want to try, then the password and username for the vendors network is usually stored on the routers configpage. Usually you only need to type 10.0.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in your browser to get there, if not then check your default gateway IP in your computers network settings and use that. Also, UPnP is the protocol which enables you to play some games without manually portforwarding everything. DHCP is the protocol that auto-configures your network settings. And RIP is used when routers need to cooperate. If you don't want to configure everything on your network manually, then I would leave all those on.
I used that router for my own internet connection in my old flat before so the problem lies somehow in the connection of both. Using mine, the one with the wifi, would solve that. Rhe password in the routers vendor page is in ****** format. That's why I would need to read that out somehow. UPnP is enabled on the "new" one, the old one doesn't have that. Scratch that, the old one has it now lets have a look. I just had a look and enabled UPnP on the "old" one, lets see.
-snip- Nevermind I'm over complicating things.
On the new router, disable the DHCP service and move the admin interface onto a different IP from the old router. Connect them together LAN port to LAN port. Your new router is now acting as a dumb Wireless access point for the old router and isn't creating a double-NAT situation.
please note I'm a software guy and I know absolutely nothing about hardware. this might not even be the place for these questions. I'm looking to upgrade my non-gaming laptop (dell inspiron series) with a slightly better video card, I was suggested a NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT. my video card is the weakest part of my system and I was wondering if modifying my laptop is worth it, or should I invest in a decent gaming laptop? My brother has an Alienware m14x ($1500ish) which has decent enough power, I was wondering what kind of laptops could do better for a similar price. I feel with the alienware series you pay more for pretty lights than power. Thanks for reading, help me out facepunch! Edit: I know asking for "a good gaming laptop for $1000-2000 price" is very vague, and is probably a question that gets asked alot. I guess I'm really looking for suggestions were to start looking for a good gaming laptop and what kind of specs to look out for, I have no manufacturer preference by the way.

Thanks for reading, help me out facepunch!
The 8800GT is an extremely old video card nowadays - I think Nvidia dropped driver updates for it recently. I would only recommend it if that's the best you can get into that laptop. Also, laptops are sometimes impossible to upgrade the graphics card, particularly if they're a non-gaming laptop. Exactly which Inspiron do you have? As for just buying a new one, you can get a decent one for around $1500. I've not bought one myself yet, but I've heard excellent things about Sager.
Just checked, Inspiron N5110.
Just checked, Inspiron N5110.
Yeah, there's no way to upgrade the graphics in that one. As for your specs on a new laptop, I'd say any standard-power Core i5 would suffice on the CPU side, and for graphics, at least a GeForce 755M or 850M (or higher within each series, like a 760M or 860M - a 740M/750M would also be fine if you get one that uses GDDR5 instead of DDR3) or a Radeon 8770M or higher.
I'm looking at some Sager laptops now, I'm interested in the smaller sized laptops and they're cheaper than I expected like $1100. That kinda worries me a bit that they're less money demanding than I thought they'd be. I feel like lower priced laptops are a trap for people who don't know about hardware. this is what I'm looking at; I'm not sure if its good enough for what I want just by looking at the specs. [editline]5th April 2014[/editline] this laptop comes standard is Core i7-4700MQ, and video card is Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M GPU with 2GB GDDR5 Video Memory. and theres two memory options that don't change the price: 8GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz - 1 X 8GB 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz - 2 X 4GB I don't know what these mean.

Go with the first if you plan on upgrading or go with the bottom one instead.
Sounds good. You guys have been a great help, usually when I post on this area of the forums I get made fun of for not knowing what I'm talking about. Thanks!
I'm using Chrome and embedded links like the pages from other sites in the News Section and Youtube videos are just white space. I have tried deleting all browsing data and nothing has changed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Is there any web browsers that work properly? Chrome preference file keeps deleting it self, so it resets all my settings for it. Firefox has video problems like a random stutter or they will just randomly lock up cause of shockwave crashing. I'll be using IE at this rate.
