shit, I don't even have a soundcard. Besides isn't this cable thingy used for power?
shit, I don't even have a soundcard. Besides isn't this cable thingy used for power?
I doubt it. TV tuners aren't very power hungry devices, even back then. Most likely what it was for is to allow analog TV audio to pass directly to the sound card, so it would be processed by your sound card. It would go to an auxilary input on the sound card or motherboard. Older CD drives and such also have these, for similar reasons. It was simply a way to reduce load on the CPU on much older computers. You could try running it without it connected to anything, since newer drivers may be able to handle audio through software. Or since it plain old line level stereo analog audio, you may be able to hack together a connector and connect it to the line-in on your sound-card. Either way, if Australia is like the US, a card that old isn't going to be able to use the newer digital standards and analog is of limited use. You may be better off buying a modern one.
Wouldn't that go onto the motherboard audio pins? Check your manual, find out where those are, and then plug that thing in there.
I just installed Nvidia drivers for my Linux Manjaro installation. Now I'm getting this "blinking cursor" after GRUB (not the blinking cursor you get before your computer even gets into the OS), which probably means I did something wrong. Anybody have any idea as to what I might've done wrong, and how I can fix this? EDIT: Nevermind, fixed.
Anybody have any alternatives for the ASUS T100 Transformer Book? I need something for school, lightweight, small, and lasts throughout the day and the T100 seems right up my alley and it comes with Office 2013 pre-installed. I plan on getting the 32GB SSD, 500GB keyboard dock and a 32GB micro SD card for extra storage in the tablet portion. With all the stuff I plan on getting for this thing (case, tablet pen/actual pen hybrid, portable wireless mouse, and the SD card) comes to about $465 with next day shipping bumping it up to $520 so I guess that's my budget. Any other suggestions or is what I'm looking at alright?
I finally got the point where a single 6670 cant chug a game along even on the lowest settings, so I'm considering a upgrade for my GPU. Problem is I got no steady income, and I have just enough money for another 6670 to run in crossfire mode. Shall I just purchase another 6670 or spend like a year and a half on fetching money for a entirely new GPU? My mainboard at least has a additional PCI-E port.

My uncle just gave me $500 to spend on a college laptop. I've never bought a laptop before. I'm too used to building desktops. Where would you guys recommend I shop for a machine close to that price point? I've got a Walmart, Best Buy, Staples, and Circuit City close by. I have no idea if they would differ in cost per store for the same thing. I just need advice to get the most bang for my buck.
$500 means no Mac, I'd go for a used ThinkPad.
Hey, I'm planning on buying a new router because the one I have seems to hang when there is too much load and because I find it unreliable and buggy in overall (the maximum amount of port forwarding rules is 10 and if you reach that number you can't delete any of the existing rules due to a bug). I've been looking at Asus RT-N16 but I have a question about what custom firmware I should use. The two biggest ones I know of are DD-WRT and Tomato, and if I'm correct, QoS, NAS and BitTorrent support can be found in both, which are the most important features I could use at the moment. EDIT: Scrap what I just said, I need an ADSL2+ modem too in addition to the router, so I'll probably go with a router that has the modem built-in.
Just saw something about 2500k's at the top of the page and it confirmed what I thought, I got a 2500k I think 2 or 3 years ago and thought that it would last me a good 3-4 years. Glad to see other people think that and that I won't have to upgrade soon. I also have a gtx 560ti, and I'm thinking of upgrading to a gtx 770 (most money I can stretch to) or amd equivalent, will this be a good upgrade? Will it just be a few frames here and there or will I be able to play whatever I want on ultra? I've been out of touch with PC hardware for years now, I haven't had to look into anything because I've had a good rig for a while, so now that I'm thinking of upgrading I feel completely lost

I'm going to college for Software Engineering, and would like advice on a laptop. Now, I already have a pretty fast HP ENVY 15t Quad TouchSmart. (Through a special deal it was cheaper to get a touchsmart than a non-touchscreen, so don't mind that.) Standard i7, 8GB of RAM, Windows 8 with Crunchbang duel-boot, all that fun stuff. I know this computer is going to last me through college. Now, the only problem I have with this laptop going into college is that it's pretty big and a bit on the heavier side. I'm paranoid about breaking any sort of portable electronic device I have, so ideally I would hate to carry this thing around in a backpack. It would probably stay in my dorm room. So, I would like to purchase a netbook for lugging around campus, taking notes, and such. I would probably throw Crunchbang on this thing since I won't be using it for anything but taking notes and maybe some super simple code stuff. What I'm looking for is something that is cheap, small (but comfortable to type on), durable, decent battery life, Linux-compatible, and if possible has an HDMI port so I could hook it into a second monitor or a TV for watching some movies. Not all too picky, though. Doesn't even need to have an operating system.

My internet cuts out for a couple of seconds every minute or so. Browsing sites is ok but playing online games is impossible because of the packet loss when it cuts out. Where do I start with troubleshooting this shit?

If it does affect all of them, connect a PC straight to the modem, to bypass the router. If not, check your Ethernet cable or NIC connection. If it still cuts out connected to the modem, then you either have a modem, line signal problem, or ISP problem.
I'm having similar issues, horrible lag spikes, that sort of thing. Windows 8.1, Airport Express connected via ethernet as a wireless adapter. When I unplug the ethernet from the Airport Express and plug it back in, my Internet goes back to normal. I'm guessing that's a problem with the Airport or my PC, right?
Does this look like an okay deal? My max budget is $700, so I was curious if this looked like a good college PC (computer science, bachelor degree PC). I plan to upgrade to 16 GB around my third year when I actually get to any programming classes.
For the money it's good, but I've had bad luck with anything but Latitudes from Dell lately.
Is there any signs of a new GTX line comming out soon? I think my 670 is on its way out, screen randomly flashes / entire screen artifacts for 1 micro second every so often

Which pc cooler would be working with the cooler master silencio 550 case on the top slot? There are no pins for it so I probably need a cooler that haves some sort of solution for that. My pc runs to loud in the summer and especially when games are running. I am total new to stuff like that, help is greatly appreciated. I5 2500k @4.4ghz Radeon HD 7950 3gb
'Sup, I have two hard drives right now and they both have about ~5gb of space left between them so I'm in need of an upgrade I've been looking at a WD Black 1TB Drive, and it supposedly offers like 6gb/s transfer rates, according to HD Tune Pro my current windows install drive offers 64 mb/s, will I see a large improvement in loading times and such if I got this drive?
the 6gb/s transfer rate is the max speed of sata III. the drive in reality will only transfer at around 120MB/s
I would avoid it. That 'i7' is a hyperthreaded dual core.
Do you have any tips for me to avoid hyperthreaded processors? I'm not sure how bad of an impact it would have on performance and I have no idea how to see if they're hyperthreaded or not.

Basically avoid any mobile i5 or i7 with the "U" at the end, they are shit, the rest are fine

It seems to look alright (quad core). This laptop looks like it suits my needs, if it checks out as good before I buy it.

Personally i would not buy HP, especially used, but if it's in good condition $575 is not bad
