but would it really be worth it over a good 1440p IPS panel for the same price?
[editline]9th June 2014[/editline]
i say if you're going to go 4k wait a little while
It's a good question, I'm actually considering one. Support is still lacking, but on the other hand 4K screens look amazing - there's a very noticeable difference in pixel density. Of course you could probably get a 1440p panel with better contrast, viewing angles, brightness and color accuracy, but still.
What's a good mid-tower case for air cooling? I've looked up some and the main choices I've narrowed it down to are the Corsair 500R, H440, and possibly an R4. I'm open to other cases however.
I only plan on using what stock fans come with it at the moment.
the silverstone ft02 is one of the best air cooled cases, not sure if its classed as a mid-tower though its also really expensive
to join the 4k debate above i was considering upgrading from my 1440p to either a 28" TN 4K or dells 24" IPS 4K because the prices are pretty reasonable but i dont think its worth being an early adopter of 4K, current and even future games just dont have the texture quality to make the investment worth it and i would have to spend a shitload of extra cash on atleast one 780TI maybe 2 of them and a better psu, i will swith to 4k in a generation or 2 when i have already upgraded my gpu and the koreans are putting out panels for half the price of the big brands
how good are my laptop's specs
Depends on what you want to do with it. If this laptop is intended for gaming, you're not going to get really far with it. But for less graphics intensive things it's good.

Chrome keeps opening big on new tabs!
I want it to show my most visisted sites like usual but it doesnt.
I set it to tabs in internet options

I can't access my optical drive which has been replaced by a daemon tools virtual drive and when I go to device manager my physical optical drive isn't there. How do I get my drive back?
[editline]10th June 2014[/editline]
Welp I just removed the virtual drive in daemon tools now I have no optical drive, it doesn't even show up in device manager anymore.
nvm

what kind of fan does this take, it's some kind of double wide thing that doesn't work with my current square fan.

Looks like a regular AM3+ socket heatsink mount. Is your current one for intel?

What do you guys consider good PSU OEM's? I generally will consider FSP, Seasonic, Super Flower, Enermax, and HEC. Just trying to get a feel on things.
anyone know why the USB's on the front panel doesn't work like they should? when I plug something in, it'll constantly switch between connected and disconnected. I've checked the internal USB headers and I'm 99% sure they're not loose. I've tried both of them, yet it won't connect properly. my motherboard is the MSI Z97 MPower and my case is the CM Storm Trooper. it worked flawlessly on my old P7P55D-E

I tore down my PC today, and rebuilt it from the ground up. Tried to do some cable management, but my case is just way too small to fiddle around with. Everything's packed in way too tight.
Did reapply the thermal paste on my processor, though. I scraped a very thin layer onto the processor itself, and a similarly thin one onto the heat sink. From what I read, the trick is to get it as thin as possible without letting the metal show through, so I did that. Here's hoping it runs cooler now.
I'm planning to over clock it. I've heard people go as high as 4Ghz with my cooler (Coolermaster Hyper 212+), but I'm assuming they have more fans. What would you recommend for it?

What processor do you have? I went to 4.5 on my evo with stock fan. Just gotta bump it by 100mhz and stress test it to see what you can handle.

I've got an i5 2500k. It seems pretty stable at a 40x ratio at 100mhz. Should I go 200mhz x20 instead?

You can only raise the ratios. Any more than a 2-5mhz increase on base clock will cause instabilities and crashes. Good new though, you have the last chip that Intel made that's soldered on to the die. The 2500k and 2600k are widely regarded to be the best chips in the 115x sockets. Basically what this means is that you should be able to pump it up pretty high. At least higher than an ivy or haswell of similar quality. Just increase it to 41 ratio, then run a stability test (I prefer x264, which I have linked on the last page I think, but prime 95 is probably the most popular one). Watch your temps with either hwmonitor or realtemp, or both, and try to make sure they keep below 70°C during the stress tests (actual temperature is up to you, I like to keep my temps cool though). Adjust the voltage up by the smallest increment if you crash until you do not, and repeat.

Thanks man. I'll look it over, and send any questions if I've got them.

The Kentucky way is the only right way to apply thermal paste:

Although, generally, just a dot in the middle is usually the best way to go, since it'll spread itself very evenly when you place your CPU cooler on.

Well, whatever I did worked pretty well. I ran x264 for about two hours, and it only hit temps of 60C across all cores. No crashing either, so I'm guessing I've got a stable 4Ghz clock.
The only way to know if it's really stable is to use the PC as you normally would and see if you get a bsod within a month or so. I overclocked my 2500k last year and it passed prime95 and the intel burn test for like 12 hours, but would still periodically crash when doing mundane things like browsing the internet.
can anyone link me a good pre-built thats $599 and below on amazon? im finally getting a new computer after getting a pre-built thats 7 years old (and is downright terrible), and i cant really build my own rig

why can't you build your own? prebuilts stink.

There are no excuses for buying prebuilt unless it's for a corporate environment

Or you don't feel like building a computer, are young, old, incompetent, busy, don't want to deal with individual part warranties, want to buy into an ecosystem, brand loyalty, lack of knowledge on building computers, or just don't care.
There are a lot of excuses. Granted, not all of them are valid excuses, but they are excuses.
Really, we should just let people do what they want. If he wants a prebuilt, let him get one. It's not going to hurt us, is it?
Got a laptop with a failed drive, need a replacement. Sata, at least 100GB, 2.5" form factor. Anybody know where to look? The cheapest I found was $38 on ebay, not that there's anything wrong with that price, but it's used, and considering that the old drive failed, I'm not to keen on replacing it with something that could just wear out again easily.
