best laptop that can play games for under $800? friend is buying himself a graduation present.
does it need to be a laptop because any gaming laptop under 800 is going to be bad
does it need to be a laptop because any gaming laptop under 800 is going to be bad
yeah, has to be a laptop because he doesn't want a desktop in his dorm. its not primarily for gaming but, just the best thing for 800.
Lenovo Ideapad Z710? [editline]25th June 2014[/editline] It's the only thing that comes to mind
hmm, what about this? this looks pretty good to me, besides being a pre-order. That's a no-no imo.
Okay, I'm having this weird problem. This trackpad on my MSI laptop doesn't work while I'm inputting something on the keyboard (holding down a key, quickly pressing one, etc.). This is especially happening when I am playing games, like if I try to move the camera while moving forward (pressing W), then I can't move the camera with my trackpad. I can't use a mouse because, well, I don't have a mouse with me at the moment. Any ideas?

Go to your computer settings to see if there's anything called palm check or something like that and either disable it or turn it lower. [editline]26th June 2014[/editline] I installed Firefox to try it after using Chrome for years. However, problems arose right away. For example: [t]http://i.imgur.com/KinuItT.png[/t] If I try to click any links on that page, I can't get past the CloudFare Some other sites don't load at all. What could be the problem? [editline]26th June 2014[/editline] Well apparently clearing the cache worked. Huh.
This is my current system I was wondering if it would be worthwhile to upgrade the cpu to an i5 4690k. Or if there are is another part that should take priority in upgrading. (I'd like to take advantage of some new fancy motherboard features that my old one doesn't have)

Your GPU is still fine for this day and age as well, unless you want to upgrade when the 800s come out.
overclock your cpu and it's still perfect for gaming
overclock your cpu and it's still perfect for gaming
Yeah, since it's P67 he can still make use of that.
Anyone here got experience with Lightworks (or other free editing software), who could tell me how to do a few things I'm trying to do? I have some footage, and I would like to "zoom in" on it, as in pick a part of what's on screen, and it will be stretched out to fill the screen. So kinda like zooming in. Also I want to maybe add a few gifs on screen (transparent gifs).
his board has a one click oc thing so it's pretty simple for him to do it
I enabled that but I was wondering if the upgrade would be noticeable. for example with a new motherboard to boot quicker and a new cpu for some performance gain. (even though I'm not sure if that would make a big difference)

But yeah, your CPU/Mobo/GPU are all still very much relevant at the moment, you shouldn't have to worry about upgrades right now unless you REALLY want to.
Not sure how I didn't think of looking in the trackpad settings. That fixed the problem, thanks! Edited: Now I have another problem. For some odd reason, left clicking with the trackpad buttons in games only sometimes responds. Right click works just fine. What am I missing here? It's basically the same thing as earlier but with the buttons on the trackpad rather than the trackpad's touch-sensitive part.
I'm planning to upgrade to a GTX 770. But I'm not sure if my PSU can handle it. I have a Corsair VX550. Some people say that the 550w PSU can handle it even when the 770 has a 600w "minimum" requirement, and some say that it should be upgraded. My CPU is an i5 2500k btw. So, what does FP think? Can the Corsair 550w PSU handle the 770?
I've got a Raspberry Pi sitting around. It used to host my web server, but now it's just collecting dust until I can find a use for it. Any suggestions?

Uhh, chrome keeps reopening my tabs when i close it and open it again (the setting on startup is set to 'new tab window' not open previous tabs) help edit: fixed, just forced chrome to shutdown all the way including hangouts and such

nvm fixed it

alright so i just found out the college i'm going to no longer offers wired network access in the dorms. so now i have to find a dual-band wifi adapter that supports 802.1x (which should be most of them honestly) for my desktop because it doesn't have wifi built in and i need the processing power http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166074 i ordered this rosewill one from newegg because i like the idea that the extra antennas will give me better range, but i'm wondering if anybody could possible drop a recommendation for a good, consistent wifi adapter

[del]Anyone have a suggestion on how to speed up DivX file conversion, or know of a better program to use to convert to 4K? I know I could set the encoding to "fastest", but it doesn't come out looking so good. I've tried setting the priority in Task Manager to "High" but it slows down my computer to the point of being unusable until I set the priority back to "Normal". Also, is Sony Vegas 12 a better solution to this problem? I don't really know how to use it, but if need be I'll just look up tutorials and such. Thank you.[/del] Decided on an alternative where I'll use my brother's pc while he's away to convert everything in 4K format. I'll find a different solution once he's back, hopefully. 2nd Edit: Can anyone what would happen if I took a 1920x1080 resolution with a low bitrate and converted it into 3840x2160 with the highest bitrate I can set it to? The conversion claims to be able to compress the video into taking up less space than it's original form, but I'm not sure if this will actually make the video look better than the source version (if that's even possible?) Thanks again. Sincerely, A Video-Editing Noob
for some reason my 3D settings in the nvidia control panel won't save or apply when I change settings. anyone know why? driver version is 337.88 and GPU is 780Ti [editline]29th June 2014[/editline] decided to reinstall all driver related stuff, and even though I removed everything nvidia related from the uninstall menu, I was still greeted by geforce settings when I booted. I thought nothing of it at first, but when I installed geforce experience I saw this the driver isn't listed in the uninstall menu so I'm not sure where it's getting that from. apparently it's installed as my resolution auto set itself and the settings were still on my system.
Which is better: ATX or Micro ATX?
