I'm told laptop has hdmi 1.4b so that means it would support up 120hz right? would picking a different monitor work?
It would have to be a different monitor. According to a review, the monitor only supports 1.4, not 1.4b.
Can you make an incredibly basic LAN by connecting 2 computers via an ethernet cable? I have my computer and another device with an ethernet cable and I need them to communicate, but I have no way to get both of them on the same LAN used by my home network. Is there anything I can do? And if so, do most devices supporting LAN/Ethernet support this as well, or is configuration necessary?

Provided you have a crossover cable or at least one of the the devices supports crossover mode on the network adapter itself, all you need to do is manually configure each device with an IP address and subnet. Getting them to work with the rest of the network is harder. But in that case, I have no idea how you have it set up.
Yeah. Crossover cable would do it. If you need them to connect out, and the devices support it, you could always share connection via the cable from your computer as well. (Assuming your only connection in your computer isn't 1 LAN port)
Does anybody here have experience with wifi adapters? Which is better, a USB device or a PCIe card? And either way, could I get away with buying a cheap crappy $12 one off amazon, or does the quality actually matter for these things?

i have always had problems with PCI cards, bought a cheap USB edimax one and it has worked flawlessly since

I've always had far more luck with pcie. A single band N from asus or trilink or rosewill should do well and be pretty cheap
Anyone know a cheap desktop microphone? My current one just broke, just looking for one to use playing Trouble In Terrorist town.
It's the same exact memory. I just got the first batch a few years back when DDR3 was ridic expensive. Same brand, same speed, same timing even. So you're saying I should return it and pick up a set of 3x4GB sticks instead?
Memory chips are just like any other IC, they vary by batch and even chips within the batch vary. Companies that sell complete memory modules will bin memory chips together as closely as possible so they all run at a guaranteed spec. The modules sold in kits are binned together to make sure all of the sticks run together. If at all possible, I would sell the memory you have and return the new stuff and get a complete kit of the quantity you want. I would do it soon too because DDR3 prices are shooting up again. An 8 GB kit is double the price of what it was just late last year, probably because DDR4 is right around the corner.
The bad part is that apparently these X58 boards cost like three hundred damn dollars now to pick up new.
On second thought, I would just abandon it. LGA1366 is a dead platform coming up on 4 generations old. Nobody makes LGA1366 motherboards anymore, anything you find will either be new-old stock or used and won't have a warranty; So if it breaks, you're up shit creek. Any money you spend on that system is pretty much a waste that could get you something much better.
You have to use DVI or DisplayPort, and you cannot use an adapter. HDMI and VGA won't output >60hz from your laptop, and your monitor can't take in >60hz from VGA or HDMI. If your laptop doesn't have DisplayPort or DVI you're out of luck, and it looks like it doesn't.
VGA most certainly does support higher than 60 Hz refresh rates. VGA can go up to 2048x1536 @ 85 Hz, assuming you have a properly shielded VGA cable.
So my Logitech G3 that has served me faithfully for 8 years has finally died so I need a new mouse. Any suggestions for what to get? I don't need a ridiculous fancy one with tonnes of macro buttons and such. Just need two mouse button and a scroll wheel. It also shouldn't have bloated software just so I can adjustable sensitivity. In built pushbutton selectable sensitivity would be nice. I'm looking to spend less than $50.

Can someone give me a hint as to why my main monitor keeps fucking losing signal. The cable is fine, I switched it, and it only started happening recently when I got new Nvidia drivers. The EDID is faulty, but I've gotten around it in the past by forcing it to adopt the generic monitor drivers in windows for whatever res I wanted to use it as. That stopped working after I installed the drivers, so I made a custom resolution in Nvidia settings. It seems to be shutting off after a while of use, and I can get it back by unplugging and plugging the cables back in over and over again until it works.
i have the ~$10 USB edimax and it works fine, the best would probably be a PCI card with external antenna
You mean something like this? http://www.amazon.com/Edimax-EW-7811Un-Adapter-Raspberry-Supports/dp/B003MTTJOY/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1404612034&sr=1-1&keywords=edimax+ew-7811un I can't imagine that would have that good of a range, given the size.
I'm backing up anything useful I currently have onto an external hard drive in preparation for a reformat or a failing hard drive. As of right now I have my steamapps and most of my user folder (documents, desktop files, etc.) backed up, and have my bookmarks and stuff on my google account. Is there anything else I might find useful and should save?

Is this just HD Tune being stupid or is my drive fucked up?
Right so, i want a user environment so a other Facepuncher can host his server on my box and my box runs Windows Server 2008. Right now i have: - Made a regular user account with password - Removed permissions to access my private server drive - set up his desktop with the tools that he needs - A FTP server that gives a connection to his own drive partition i made for him - Teamviewer access to get on the server Any other things i should do to make it more user friendly? One thing is that only one of us can control the server at a time since we both have our own account. Any suggestions on he and i can access our own accounts without us having to wait for each other?
So i'm thinking about upgrading my GPU. Right now i have a HD7950 and i'm wondering if i should buy another HD7950 and run them crossfire or buy a whole new GPU?

No joke, it's actually really good, allows multiple people to use the machine at once, web manager, and lots more.
I'm thinking of getting Google Drive's 1TB plan for $10 a month, is there any better services that can provide more storage for the same price point? Fast uploading and downloading would be a must but from my experience, Google Drive is pretty fast
Get a windows remote desktop license, and set it up. No joke, it's actually really good, allows multiple people to use the machine at once, web manager, and lots more.
Remote Desktop is fantastic. Its also a lot more bandwidth friendly as things are rendered locally rather than being straight up screen shots. I don't even bother with stuff like TeamViewer. You just need to forward ports and know the server IP.
Get a windows remote desktop license, and set it up.
Is this just HD Tune being stupid or is my drive fucked up?
HD Tune was last updated in like 2008? I've found it doesn't support modern drives properly (won't read S.M.A.R.T. data) so it could be expected the benchmarking part doesn't work properly either. I don't know if HD Tune Pro fixed any of the issues, but it's not free.
Whole new GPU will have better guaranteed performance, since some games don't do as good/worse with crossfire.
Doing CF with an existing GPU is usually cheaper than buying a new more powerful GPU, but like you said, not all games support it properly.

I know you have to buy licenses for each person that uses the server concurrently that isn't anonymous legally. Although server will allow more if you configure it that way, its not kosher. But your not running a business so eh, whatever.

Though if you're using it for user stuff like email or office, then you will need one.

But I don't really handle licensing at at my job so I don't know MS licensing in and out.
