So my computer's power button is very far away from my chair. I'm looking for the best way to power it on at my desk. Any ideas? And no, I will not just get off my ass.
Old telephone cable, soldering iron, and a little button from SparkFun or some other place. SparkFun COM-11996 Momentary Button would work just fine.
Buy one of these, and do what Nikomo said.
Eh, that's more work than the part I suggested. Also, the part I suggested is $0.95
Eh, that's more work than the part I suggested. Also, the part I suggested is $0.95
Yeah, but this one's cooler.
With my plan, you can get the parts you need, and a crowbar to beat you to death with.
I was hoping for something with less wire, but figured that wasn't going to happen. I do like the crowbar idea, though

Both my current computer and my older C2D have had the function, hell I seem to recall even the Via based thin client I have lying around supports it so...

[editline]24th August 2014[/editline] Plus that's wake. I guess I could just start putting my computer to sleep. It also still makes me get up whenever I crash out on an overclock. Might just have to wire up a button.
The analog plugins on my mobo for the audio just stopped working. I thought it was my headset at first but I plugged it into another computer and it works fine. I also updated my audio drivers to see if it would do anything but it's still not working. Any ideas on how I can fix this or what I can do? I guess I can buy a sound card if it's not fixable. [editline]25th August 2014[/editline] If I do end up needing to buy a sound card, could you recommend me a good/decent one that's cheap? I don't have much money at the moment.

If you do need a new one, this card is a bit better than onboard, and cheap.
Hey guys, I have a Samsung LED S20A300N monitor. I've been using it for a year and more without problems, but today, the Store mode activated for some reason and I've been endlessly searching for a way to fix this... It's messing with my settings, changing the brightness and contrast to annoying levels and so on. The manual doesn't mention this and I can only find forum threads on Google with the same problem on different monitors that really don't help me. EDIT: Well apparently the thing I was doing wrong was I didn't bring up my brightness menu before holding down the menu button to disable Store Mode. It seems like I've fixed it now.
Can anyone give me a quick run-down on the visual differences between DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort connections, if there are any at all? I already know DVI can only send video signals and HDMI/DP can send video and audio signals, but visually speaking, how different are the three?

I already know DVI can only send video signals and HDMI/DP can send video and audio signals, but visually speaking, how different are the three?
Visually, they're all digital so they're all the same, as long as they can actually carry enough data. DVI actually has three basic "modes" - analog, single-link digital, and dual-link digital. Analog is literally VGA, single-link can carry up to 1920x1200 or so (without dropping down to 24Hz), and dual-link can do 2560x1440 at full refresh rate. Really the only downside is the big, clumsy connector. HDMI is basically DVI single-link with some extra features like carrying sound, and a better connector. You can literally route DVI over HDMI, it's the same basic signal. There is a new version that carries bandwidth equivalent to dual-link, but it's not common. DisplayPort is the "best" - the picture is still the same because it's digital, but it has a lot more functionality. Displayport 1.2 has slightly more bandwidth than even DVI-DL, and 1.3 increases it until you can drive well over 4K resolutions. It has some other useful features - closed caption streams, 3D, high-color-depth video. The coolest is the display chaining - if your monitor has a DP-out port, you can use that to plug in a second monitor, so you only need one cable to your computer to plug in two monitors (useful for laptops). Overall, none of them are "bad". It's not like the old days of analog video where component was like a million times better than composite and whatnot. Unless you're doing above 1080p, you're good with any of them.
DisplayPort masterrace. Also, HDMI with ethernet is pretty common nowadays, and that's equivalent to dual-link DVI.
I've done a little research, and according to some, Nvidia is more efficient with their "stream processors." At least that seemed to be the case a number of years ago. I am comparing cards, and I once had a Radeon 5830. To compare to some cards now, it still looks pretty good, but bigger numbers probably do not mean better in this case. This, or the market now demands more money for cards. I could get the 5830 for $50 on ebay (granted everything pans out! of course). I could also get a newer card for about $100, but aside from a 200mhz core clock increase (probably a lot!), the numbers are comparable. Or are they. [editline]27th August 2014[/editline] Some new numbers threw me off. They're exactly the same. I just haven't seem ROPs on Newegg before, and forgot I'd seen them before on Tom's Hardware.
Uhm, stupidass question but Why is this called MicroUSB [t]http://puu.sh/bay7k.jpg[/t] When the 3 MicroUSB chargers I have have a fully open trapezoids. Different cable entirely that is also called "Micro USB"???? I ordered the above because that's what it says it is, but it isn't?

o. wtf is my phone in then
o. wtf is my phone in then
pic?
my galaxy SII and galaxy Tab S are both in the same small "USB". Can't get a good pic with my phone, but I think android is pretty popular on here. Anyone know what they are? [editline]27th August 2014[/editline] the technical specs are not useful "gee, thx"

Yeah, I bought a female USB -> male micro USB and the micro USB pictured above doesn't fit in either device. [editline]27th August 2014[/editline] Like...I'm not tech illiterate or anything, this is definitely super dumb and simple, but it doesn't make any sense haha.
That cable should definitely fit into the MicroUSB slot on both of those devices. This is the port, right?
Yepper [editline]27th August 2014[/editline] fits in halfway and then stops. again, the inside of the new cable is as pictured in my original post, but all the micro USB cables I have around don't have that black stopper. The entire inside of the trapezoid(ish shape) is used.
micro usb hangs out like that does it charge it?
4690k or save a bit longer for 4790k? Or E3-1230 v3? Gaming.
4690k or save a bit longer for 4790k? Or E3-1230 v3? Gaming.
I'm using an i5-2500K, as are quite a few people here, and I've as of yet had no issues. I'd imagine anything up from that would suit your purposes well.
micro usb hangs out like that does it charge it?
Well there's no connection as far as I can tell. In short, it doesn't act like my other cables.
