I was about to install an old Vista copy on my PC, but then I realized I could just pirate (or maybe even buy) Windows 8 instead. The thought of no start menu makes me cringe, but performance wise would it be better than vista? (User was banned for this post ("Hinting warez" - SteveUK))

I'm not sure what you mean by performance but Win8 boots quicker. But if your options are use a legit copy (Vista) or pirate (Win8) then just use Vista. AFAIK Microsoft still support it and update it.
Not a huge fan of closed loops but y/n on http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835146027 I want an aftermarket cooler and this is only $8 more than the NZXT Havik 140 I was already looking at.

fuck after thinking about it I just can't justify it right now, I'll wait til I upgrade I guess

Performance will be better, but only by a negligible amount. Biggest thing will be DX11 support.
I booted up last night and got this message [t]http://puu.sh/2sktT[/t] I don't speak computer, what does it mean, will my computer will blow up soon?

So I'm looking at this Lenovo Ideapad y500 laptop and it mentions having both an SSD and an HDD. Since the Lenovo website itself wasn't too useful, anybody know if this is a standard SATA-connected SSD or mSATA?
I need to replace my dying MX518. Would like a similar mouse. Should I get another MX518 or upgrade to something a bit nicer?
Cheapest HTPC solution that can run Plex? I was looking at Raspberry Pi, but Rasplex is still in development and thus slow.
I need to replace my dying MX518. Would like a similar mouse. Should I get another MX518 or upgrade to something a bit nicer?
I went to the G500 but it's a bit more bulky. I'm thinking about getting another MX518 instead.
lavacano is literally unhelpful. It's an Asrock Z77 Pro and a 3570k btw.
Well, have you tried feeding it? Maybe it wants a nice cup of tea.
lavacano is literally unhelpful. It's an Asrock Z77 Pro and a 3570k btw.
Stick a speaker in it! POST beeps are the most important thing always also, wipe your CMOS, that does miracles sometimes
That was a nice shower
Tried a speaker. Doesn't seem to be beeping at me so either the speaker doesn't work or it's DOA?
6pin cpu power plugged in?
6pin cpu power plugged in?
Yeah, got the 24 and 6 pin cables both plugged in. http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/370076-31-asrock-pro3-3570k-booting-correctly Found this that describes exactly the same problem down to mobo and CPU model, but their fix didn't seem to do anything. I don't see how the polarity of the power switch wires would make a difference, either.
So when does the next generation of Nvidia GPUs and Intel procs come out?
So when does the next generation of Nvidia GPUs and Intel procs come out?
Nvidia probably sometime around Q4 this year/Q1 next year, Haswell in May/June. This isn't set in stone, just speculation. I don't think Intel has said when exactly their next CPU line is coming out but I'd say around the end of spring with all the information that has come out on them. I heard Nvidia is doing some kind of unveil thing in the summer.

Mostly just going to be Kepler rebadges, and probably more low-end Keplers (to replace the Fermis they still had in the 600 series). Die shrinks are kind of unlikely at this point. It's started already on the laptop side. The 710M through 750M are known, should be released shortly. They did a sort of half-year refresh on the high-end laptop parts last year (the 670MX, 675MX and 680MX), so if they do launch high-end 700M-series parts, they'll just be rebadges. Haswell stuff is supposed to be launching soon - I've heard the PC makers already have them in their hands. Intel usually launches around this time of year (April-June).
So say I have two HDD's. One has Linux installed, the other Windows. Now can I just select which drive to boot into in bios and be problem-free? It's probably a dumb question and I'm sure the answer must be yes, but I just wanted to make sure, I'm kind of worried the hardware wouldn't like that kind of OS-swapping or something...

I just took out the sata cable on the windows hdd when I was installing Linux

It will work fine.
Just bring up the bios boot menu and choose the drive.
He's concerned about the bootloader... doh
He's concerned about the bootloader... doh
Not really, he is concerned the hardware won't like it. And you gave him advice regarding installing linux alongside windows when he has already installed both.
Anyone have any idea why windows would take a long time to start up? I seem to be waiting a fair amount of time longer than others to get to windows start-up screens
Anyone have any idea why windows would take a long time to start up? I seem to be waiting a fair amount of time longer than others to get to windows start-up screens
You might have a load of start-up processes that want to run.
You might have a load of start-up processes that want to run.
Its not start-up stuff where it is running my programs and such (A process i've already minimized anyway) I mean to start-up windows it's self
