Do you have the page file disabled? Windows likes to bitch about lack of memory if the page file is disabled even if you have 50% free. Screen going black sounds a bit like a GPU issue though. Worst thing that happens when your memory gets used up is that your PC completely crashes or moves really slow (because of the page file). GPU most likely defective, but make sure your GPU drivers are up to date just in case.
I had the pagefile disabled at one point, but had to revert as Windows started complaining very frequently. it's currently at an initial size of 2GB with 4GB max allowed it's the first time the black screen thing has happened, and other than that it works as expected as far as I'm concerned. drivers are up to date as well
I might buy a Zenbook soon, something like UX32VD. Does anyone have any experience with how long in battery time those last?
not sure if this question qualifies as programming because LaTeX is markup but how do i get into LaTeX? is this alright?

Does anyone know a good free in-game recording program? my Geforce Experience program just crashes all the time now.. and i would like an alternative to it..
https://obsproject.com/
That's actually really nice. I played around with it and seems to work pretty well, even for desktop captures. I tried it on Watch_Dogs and didn't see a noticeable performance hit using NVENC although there was a bit of jitter in the video output. That might just be the 745M being pushed hard or (quite frankly) Watch_Dogs :v:.
If you're not using Game Capture or you haven't set the NVENC preset to main it can output video like trash.
I'll give main a try since it was set to high. [editline]12th September 2014[/editline] Oh wait that last post was my 8K post yaay for no life. [editline]12th September 2014[/editline] Nevermind, I started Skyrim and the video is fine. Turns out my CPU was just getting overwhelmed in Watch_Dogs and the CPU overhead from the video capture. Makes sense, an ULV i7 dual core is a little underpowered for Watch_Dogs in the first place. :v:
If my i7-4770k temps with a stock cooler is 39C, what should they be with a Corsair H100i?
If my i7-4770k temps with a stock cooler is 39C, what should they be with a Corsair H100i?
Somewhere in the 20s, it's more noticeable in the higher temps.
should I be worried?
should I be worried?
If that's idle, yes. Clean out your fan?
That's pretty shitty. If you installed the heatsink yourself you're probably going to have to do it again with fresh paste. Don't spread the paste out with like a credit card or anything, that's a dumb technique I'm sick of seeing too. If it's just recently gone up or you've had the CPU a while, check for usage and dust. [editline]14th September 2014[/editline] This is worth a watch for anyone unsure as to how to apply thermal paste.
I spread out Arctic Silver 5 on my i7 with a business card and it worked just fine.
I spread out Arctic Silver 5 on my i7 with a business card and it worked just fine.
Same here. In fact, it dropped the temp five or six degrees C than when I had it applied via the dot method. Granted, the surface of my heatsink is also almost entirely flat, so that might make a difference.
I spread out Arctic Silver 5 on my i7 with a business card and it worked just fine.
Spreading with a business card is a bad idea because it's going to spill over the edges and you're guaranteed to get air bubbles. It might "work" in the sense that your CPU doesn't have a meltdown but it's been proven over and over it's a terrible method
With the exception of something like coollaboratory or ceramiceramique spreading is a great way to get bubbles

What about it working in the sense that my machine actually runs and idles cooler now than it did when I had applied it "correctly," then? Any idea what's causing that?
So... What about it working in the sense that my machine actually runs and idles cooler now than it did when I had applied it "correctly," then? Any idea what's causing that?
I'm gonna say placebo or you REALLY messed up last time when applying it
So I'm still dealing with graphics card issues, and I'm not entirely sure how to do some of the recommended tests/fixes: 1) Stress test with Furmark for stability. It seems pretty straight forward, but I've seen people say that it can damage your card if you do it improperly? How should I test my cards to make sure they're not damaged (possibly more than they already are)? 2) Reset overclocked GPUs or underclock them for stability. How would I know if my card is overclocked to begin with (was bought pre-assembled), and if I'm going to underclock it, how much should I do it by? 3) If it turns out my card is fried and I decide to get a new one, is there anything I should know about selecting a new one? My system is ~4 years old, would it be able to handle newer cards?

Keep an eye on the temps and watch for artifacts and stuff. 2. Check the card model against some online stats. Mainly the clock and memory speeds. 3. It depends on your budget, existing set up and some other things really. What is your current set up?
I'm gonna say placebo or you REALLY messed up last time when applying it
Grain of rice, middle of CPU, smash it down with the cooler. That's what I did the first time. The second time, I spread it across the card. I applied it more thickly than I did the first time, but ultimately didn't do much beyond that. I get that this is entirely anecdotal, but are you seriously not willing to consider that, depending on the cooler, it might sometimes be beneficial to spread the thermal paste rather than press it?
I'd say it depends on the CPU, you normally don't need to cover the whole thing in paste because the processor itself is tiny under the heat-spreader, a good thermal transfer directly between the processor and the heatsink is more important than covering the whole thing in paste. Have a look at this from Arctic Silver's website, Page 5: Applying thermal compound. http://www.arcticsilver.com/PDF/appmeth/amd/md/amd_app_method_middle_dot_v1.3.pdf When you spread, you get layers and gaps of air within the paste and air is a shitty conductor of heat. Unless the heatsink is awkward as fuck to get on and you can't properly push down on the paste without ruining it, I can't imagine why spreading would ever be better.
Also if you have a direct contact heatsink like the 212 EVO, a two line method is better than the dot if done correctly
Oh yeah I don't mind what pattern is used. I used the cross pattern for when I repaired my PS3 because coverage was more important. Just don't spread that shit manually. The fan on my PS3 takes a lot longer to come on now too, so something good came of that YLOD.
Hey, posting here for a friend. He's looking for a cheap microphone that has good enough sound quality for TeamSpeak and in-game. Anyone got any recommendations please?
Grabbing a tablet, what's a good one that's not uber expensive or shitty? Bonus points if I can hook a keyboard to it and use Word on it.

I had to reformat and re-install Windows 7 64-bit on my hard drive a few days ago, and only now do I find out that for some reason, it won't read the CD in my disc drive. It's connected and everything, it just doesn't show up. Along with some other issues like general slowness, slower then it was before the format, and freezing up completely for 30-40 seconds some times (not commonly but it's happened), I'm worried my HDD is going out the door. Mainly I'm most annoyed about my disc drive, though. I want to play Halo CE. Does anyone know how I can find out what's wrong, or just outright fix the problem?
