I have a friend who's a rather neurotic and his PSU fan is making more noise than normal. It's driving him crazy and he's trying to figure out what's going on. Personally, whenever my fans get loud they're just out of balance and it only persists a couple of days and they'll rebalance. However, he can't handle that and is trying to find some way to fix it. Should he attempt to take the PSU apart and reseat the fan? Tape on the blade? Just let it spin and rebalance on its own?
Windows, and to check things like status/health, read/write speed etc.
Well, HDTune (Trialware) or smartmontools/smartctl (Free) is what I've tried atleast, both work great.
Yeah, taking apart a PSU is a bad idea unless you're sure you know what you're doing.
That's what I was thinking. He said he'd already tried taking it apart but it was too much work to even get it out of the computer to do so that it wasn't worth it. [editline]27th September 2014[/editline] And he just told me he's going to replace it. I guess that takes care of it.
what does it mean when my internet keeps getting stuck on waiting for various web server responses? google chrome keeps saying "waiting for *insert website url*...", web browsers also flat out stop working altogether and it tries to load the webpage indefinitely whenever i try to log into an https secure website. and games like diablo 3 or WoW are VERY laggy but when i run a speedtest it takes a long time to find a server but when it finds one I get 16 mbps download speeds (normal speeds). i already switched over to ipv4 and ipv6 Google DNS servers, i rebooted my router several times. My mom's ipad is having similar issues too. what the hell is going on here? I use ATT U-verse oh and it's wired over ethernet
Wireless or wired. I find most of those problems when they happen to me because of a crappy wireless connection.
wired
I use ATT U-verse
there's your issue there (or at least what I'd say from personal experience). we had AT&T tell us they could give us 25Mbps fiber-to-the-curb. We were lucky to get 14Mbps at ass-o-clock in the morning, and the stability of our connection was absolute garbage. we had a free month trial and swapped back to Comcast by the end of the first week.
this has probably been asked a gorillian times but what is a reliable hard drive brand? I need a new internal hard drive for my laptop, I'm using a seagate one but I've had this laptop for 4 years and it's been having a lot of issues lately. I feel really guilty crashing out of a dota/lol games with friends. [editline]28th September 2014[/editline] size isnt that much of a concern, i'm fine with around 500gb
Western Digital
Windows, and to check things like status/health, read/write speed etc.
SMART tool I use Acronis Disk Monitor on my server CrystalDiskMark for benchmarking disks, keep in mind - this isn't very healthy to do..
Anything with a long warranty. A company wouldn't put a 5 year warranty on a shitty drive. Or get a large SSD if you can afford it.
My hard drive's failing, what's the best way to quickly recover data quickly before it goes kaput?
My hard drive's failing, what's the best way to quickly recover data quickly before it goes kaput?
Buy another drive and transfer everything or upload to multiple free cloud services. How much data do you need to save?
Buy another drive and transfer everything or upload to multiple free cloud services. How much data do you need to save?
Not too much, just my documents folder and stuff I have on my desktop, Almost everything else is just stuff from the internet that I can download again. I have plenty of other drives to copy to.
Move it to your other drives. Is this your main drive with your OS?
It's the main drive in my main computer, I'm currently using a different computer ATM
Western Digital
I'll keep WD in mind. How's Hitachi?
I'll keep WD in mind. How's Hitachi?
Eh. They're owned by WD, but not up to snuff. WD is king of the laptop drives atm imo.
Is there any truth in this?: [t]http://core0.staticworld.net/images/article/2014/01/backblaze-long-term-hdd-survival-rate-brand-100226260-orig.jpg[/t] http://www.pcworld.com/article/2089464/three-year-27-000-drive-study-reveals-the-most-reliable-hard-drive-makers.html
Very little.

Here's a link to the original report by backblaze: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/what-hard-drive-should-i-buy/ Some drives have a much higher failure rate than others, but I don't think it's fair to say an entire brand has a high failure rate when each line/generation can vary greatly from others.
Let me see if I can find the article point out what a massively flawed study it is. It is backblazes actual results, but there are several large factors that invalidate a lot of conclusions you can draw from it. Has there been any word on when Intel's next line of CPUs will be released and/or what features they're bringing to the table that make them different from Haswell and Haswell Refresh?
Has there been any word on when Intel's next line of CPUs will be released and/or what features they're bringing to the table that make them different from Haswell and Haswell Refresh?
It's called Broadwell, tentative for sometime this year or early next year (I'd wager there's not going to be much this year, maybe some ULP stuff only). Biggest feature is a die shrink to 14nm, which should cut down even more on power usage, maybe boost clock speeds.
Quick question on Operating Systems since I've never installed/overwritten/upgraded one before. Recently I found out that in fact it was not my processor that was 32 bit, but this version of Vista that's 32-bit. (Hand-me-down PC but still I cant fathom how a manufacturer thought it was a good idea to ship a 64 cpu with 32 os) I heard that it's possible to find an iso of the same OS version, but with 64 bit and I can use the same product key and just do that for free? I don't really understand how that works. As you can imagine the frustrations of someone who has a 64 bit cpu on 32 bit vista, I really want learn.

It was just standard practice until >4 GB of RAM became mainstream. Just find a 64 bit ISO of the Vista version that you use and install it reusing the key your laptop currently has. It really is that simple (you might need to call Microsoft if it doesn't activate). Note that you will need to do a completely fresh install since 32 bit and 64 bit are not compatible. However, if you only have like 3 GB of RAM, you aren't going to see much of a benefit so I wouldn't bother.
