Update! Did it. Managed to get Windows and Linux to dualboot in complete harmony and sent him the hDD and it works perfectly!
Woop!
Can someone briefly and simplistically explain what Petaflops is? I mean simple and without huge mathematical formulas.
Can someone briefly and simplistically explain what Petaflops is? I mean simple and without huge mathematical formulas.
FLOPS simply how many floating point operations a computer makes in a second. Basically, complex math based operations, since many operations are for logic and moving data. A plain measurement of instructions per second is not truly accurate, especially in the world of super computers since the real work is the math.
A petaflop is simply 1 quadrillion FLOPS a second.
Can someone briefly and simplistically explain what Petaflops is? I mean simple and without huge mathematical formulas.
It's a count of how many "FLoating-point OPerations per Second" a processor/computer can do. It's a measure of processor performance.
Computers have two main types of numbers they deal with - integer (1, 2, 3) and floating-point (1.0, 2.5, 3.14). Integer performance is usually fastest (since it's simpler), but most processor-heavy applications need floating-point performance. So FLOPS are measured instead.
You can think of it roughly as gigahertz x number of cores - very roughly. Different processors have different amount of performance per clock - standardizing on FP multiply and add operations means you measure the actual performance. Think of a computer as an engine - the frequency (gigahertz) is like the RPM, while the gigaflops is like the actual horsepower.
A petaflop is a quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000) floating-point operations per second. That's a fuckton - the biggest supercomputer on the planet only runs 54 petaflops. Most consumer computers are far lower - a Titan Black GPU has a raw power of 1.7 teraflops (trillion FLOPS), and a top-end Core i7 runs around 350 gigaflops (billion FLOPS).
What kind of power supply should you get if you plan to have SLI of 980GTX?
850W?
I watched a video that i can't find now, but by the sound of it I could run my oc'd 2500k + 4 GTX 980s on my EVGA NEX650G
I got some interesting wireless problems, this machine I have can't connect to the internet on my wireless network. It keeps endlessly switching between "connecting to local network" and "connected to local network, no internet access". It was able to connect to the internet once, a while ago, but it cut out every once in a while.
The real frustrating thing is that I have a different machine on the same desk that is able to connect, no problem, no cutting out.
Is there any way I can fix this? I really don't want to have to route an ethernet cable all the way from the router into this room.

Does it ever get to the point that its getting a valid IP address?
Does it ever get to the point that its getting a valid IP address?
I moved the router physically closer to the machine for a few minutes, then moved it back exactly where it was, and there was a popup that said it had the same IP as a different machine on the network, which is odd because everything connected is set to obtain the IP from the router. It seems to be working fine now, so far.
What happened here, exactly? Could this be a sign of a larger issue?

I'm trying to find a case that:
* Can fit a MicroATX board
* Has a power supply more than 350W
* Is slim (low profile expansion slots)
* Can be placed vertically
The Antec Minuet 350 seems like it's exactly what I'm looking for, but for some weird reason, it's not being sold in Japan anymore (but still is in the US). Anybody know of any other cases that meet the above criteria?

Never use PSU's that come with a case.

Well then, something I can at least use an SFX power supply with?
2 out of the 4 push-pins that holds my stock cpu cooler in place has come loose, and i'm unsure if should be able to just push them back in or if i have to remove the cooler completely and re-install it.
i noticed the problem as i had recently moved the pc and when i booted it, it was really slow. the cpu use jumped between 25-85% just playing youtube videos and upon opening the case i noticed what i think is the flaw.
anyways, i'm really uneducated about this, so any help would be appreciated greatly!
Got a new SSD and want to pop Windows on it.
I own a Windows 7 upgrade key and know how to make it work as a full copy.
However, should I get and use Windows 8 now? Is it worth it? If so, where's the cheapest place to grab it from? And which version?
Thanks
Helping a friend fix his PC, it's giving a "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN" error on chrome.
Google, 4chan (why???), teamviewer (Using it right now to access his PC) work perfectly fine, but every other site gives that error. I've already flushed through everything, and even changed the DNS to Google's (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)
yet the problem persists. I've reinstalled chrome, and tried turning off the fire wall to no avail either. Any solutions?

Run a tracert, sounds like something's interfering with your network.
Actually, since it seems like it's impossible to find a low profile case that works with a SFX power supply or has a power supply with more than 300W, I think it's better to ask whether this build would work fine on a 300W power supply:

Windows 10 is running extremely well for it being a tech preview. (+ It's free)

And I have a question. I'm looking for a 3D monitor larger than 27 inches that works with AMD cards (HD3D). However, I can't find a single one that isn't discontinued for Canada. Anyone know a good 3D monitor that is still available, and works on AMD cards?

I'd remove and repaste the heatsink. try to find a manual online for a kinda simmilar pushpin heatsink and see if you can beg some thermal paste off of a nerde friend or a local pc shop, or pony up 5bux for some thermap paste off newegg. apply a very small amount, going for a paper thin layer.

Just stay away from windows 8.1 at all costs right now. I'm currently battling the ever popular "Disk usage at 100%" monster that many other people are as well.

...What? There's a solution for that problem already. Why are people still digging for reasons to hate Windows 8.1?

Hi,
I have been searching for a solution for over a month now and have finally solved the issue:
Go to charms bar and press search, then type view local services.
Once here, stop and disable BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service). Also, set windows update checks to manual.
Chrome also seemed to be a factor so uninstall that too.
I hope this helps you out ;)

If you have Windows 7 then there's no real incentive to upgrade.
If you have XP/Vista and are able to upgrade then Windows 8.1 is something you should aim for in a lot of situations.

I love windows 8.1. But it does have an issue right now with intermittent disk usage skyrocketing which causes the system to freeze/lock up. As for those solutions like disabling superfetch and BITS, I've tried those already.
I should clarify that in not trying to say 8.1 is bad and that he should avoid it forever, because it is a great OS. In fact, this is the first problem I've had with the actual OS ever. I'm just saying he should wait until they do an update to fix a problem that doesn't have a specific known cause or reliable solution yet. Hell, some people are fixing it by disabling those services and others only fixed it by installing and running skype.

Oh, alright, my bad. It's weird though, I have two computers with Windows 8.1 on them and neither of them have had that problem. Maybe it has to do with both of them using a SSD as the boot drive?

There are a few possible causes:
1) A program or service's file being corrupt causing windows to get stuck in a loop creating search files.
2) Windows trying to relocate data from bad spots on your disk drive.
3) Software like drivers and whatnot.
Now my drivers are up to date and work well, the use age is coming from a system process, and chkdsk returned 0 bad spots on my disk, so I'm inclined to believe it's option 1.
It's not about SSD over SDD. It's happened to both. I would be more concerned with it causing unneeded wear for an SSD due to it's limited number of read/write cycles per cell more than anything else, but if all you're doing is booting from the SSD, I wouldn't worry too much.

follow some online guide for cleaning off the old paste from the cpu and cooler before you put it back on. wetting q tips or cotton balls with rubbing alcohol works well. don't take the cpu out of the socket, you don't have a reason to and that just increases the chance of something going wrong.
