Would it be possible for some of my CPU contact pins to be bent, causing my PC to stutter periodically? I feel like if any of the pins were off, the PC would just not boot, or CPU diagnostic software would pick it up. However, after cleaning a retarded amount of thermal paste off of my CPU and re-seating it, I noticed some of the pins on the motherboard looked off, and I feared the worst, but my PC starts up and operates fine, despite stuttering and pausing and in some cases forgetting to load shit and causing games to go out of sync.

I'd say its a coincidence. CPU failure tends to be pretty catastrophic, not intermittent. Not in that way.
Your problem is probably something else.
You can bend a surprising number of those pins without noticing any issues. It's not "Oh, you bent one pin, you're screwed," quite as often as people think.

Depends on what pin you bend
Avast is pestering me to register, and refuses to protect me until I do so despite being the free version. Which is currently the best free antivirus?
Bit of a strange thing to ask, but does anyone happen to know where the notion of "futureproofing" came from? I'm writing a paper for a class on how buying overkill PC hardware is a waste of money and suffers greatly from the law of diminishing returns and how futureproofing is, realistically speaking, just a fantasy. Sources and extra information/insights would be great.

I don't know how much you're going to find on this topic but good luck. I don't even really understand the notion of "futureproofing". Ok sure, you wanna spend X amount of monies so you dont have to upgrade for Y amount of months. Seems kinda silly.
Anyone got any tips for making a really, freaking slow computer actually usable?
In a nutshell, my mother is getting irritated with this god-awful PC because it's slow, and claiming that installs and viruses have slowed it down so much...
...It's got a Pentium D (3.00 Ghz, single core) and 1GB of DDR2 RAM... And it's running Windows 7...
Anyone got any tips to make this thing actually usable? I know pretty well that it's overdue for an upgrade, unfortunately, some are adament to upgrade, and insist in must be a software issue.
Oh, also, just so i don't sound like one of those spoiled kids who constantly rant about their parents for not buying them the latest things. I would pay for an upgrade myself, unfortunately, money is tight and my phone is on it's last legs. So i can't afford it
That pc can't handle W7, that's probably why it's slow. Put linux or a really basic version of windows on it.

I heard Chromium OS is pretty fast too?
Anyway, It's a pain in the ass really. I'll look into something like Win XP or Win 97. Linux would just confuse my family lol

+1
if your family only uses web crap they could scrape by with fucking android on there

I mean like, you could find a version of Tiny7, or TinyXp, those might run better on that machine.

Alas. They are stubborn. They will refuse to attempt to use a new OS, even if it has great improvements

Cheers. I'll give it a look.
Anyone got a OnePlus One invite?
alright, I have a 775 motherbard, a dx975xbx intel ~gaymen~ board. the cpu support is weird, anyone know what I can jam in there for some okay performance?

Nothing. You really need to upgrade the board.

Useful or shit?
Expected it to be shit, actually doesn't look too bad. Not as good as actually talking to someone who knows what they're talking about, but you could do a lot worse than consulting this.

To at least make it a bit useable, purchase some more RAM for that thing.
Try to find the model name of the mainboard, and see what its maximum capacity is.
That thing's hard drive is most likely crippling by hard faults each second because it has so little memory.
When something in the RAM goes for a few, the drive will keep whatever's problematic active for a while, at least that's what I know.

i get that, but I'm trying to build a lemon rig.
runs with p4ht @ 3ghz, I'd like to get a quad in there

It needs more RAM. 1 GB is barely enough to get by on anything these days. Get it up to 2 or 3 and you'll see a massive improvement.
Unfortunately Intel boards don't always play nice with the 771 mod so depending on the chipset a core2quad may be your only choice.

Core 2 Quad would be fine for most usage (I have the Q8300, and I can play most games on this).
If your motherboard supports more RAM, I'd recommend upgrading it.
Having read this page, your system won't support a C2Quad, but will support a duo (they're reasonable CPUs too).
Any recommendation on a wireless mouse for an ultrabook?
I'll like something that is palm-grip and not claw.
So
I kinda want a GTX 990 when it comes out, but that's a dual GPU card, and my motherboard doesn't support SLI (it has two PCI slots, but it only supports Crossfire), would it still work properly? I guess the mobo doesn't have to do any additional work if it uses one PCI slot, right? Google says yes but all the results are really old so I'd rather make sure.
yes
the dual gpu card will be on the one board through the one PCI-E slot
Yeah I knew it's all in one package using one slot, I just thought there might be more to it regarding motherboard support.
Thanks!
I want to get a general idea, or rather rule of thumb when it comes to getting the proper PSU for not only my future build, but to know for other builds and whatnot. I entered in all of the parts into http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine and I got a minimum wattage of 353 W and a recommended wattage of 403 W. Now I expect to be able to upgrade things like the gpu overtime so I was wondering if a 520 W PSU would be appropriate for the results I received. As far as PSU calculators, how much higher should I go (as far as choosing a PSU) in comparison to the numbers you get from these calculators? Do you go 50W, 100W, or more above the recommended wattage or do you try to match that recommended value?
you never use a calculator, they are complete crap to rely on.
post parts and many people can give you the proper recommendation.
also, future parts are actually going down in power consumption, so normally it's not that big of an issue.
but, brand of the PSU matters too rather heavily
I had to remove Malwarebytes since it caused BSODs for me.
What other program should i use instead together with windows defender?

Actually that calculator is fairly good if you use it properly.
