I have "10mbps" DSL. Spotify might just max out my internet here.
I was more talking about my usage meters... I've used about 2TB of data this month, on my desktop, by myself, in a house with three other people. I'm not sure how I'd deal with a 250GB cap.
Your router might have that feature, but it might not. Log into the admin page and check it out. I know dd-wrt and tomato have a bandwidth meter.
Unfortunately it does not. Well it shows me the amount of traffic but now where it is coming from; which is what I really need to know.

How do I force Windows to output to either Speakers or Headphones? because I most certainly do have things plugged in. Installing actual Realtek drivers didn't help.
Hey guys, I have a Z68AP-D3 rev 2.0 motherboard and want to upgrade my GTX 550 Ti to a GTX 760. But I'm not really sure if my motherboard is compatible with PCI-E 3.0. My GTX 550 Ti is PCI-E 2.0 and my motherboard manual says that the expansion slots are compatible with 2.0 standards. I'm not really sure if the card I want to upgrade to is compatible, is it? Manual says it's compatible with 2.0 standards, but it says that All PCI Express x16 slots conform to PCI Express 3.0 standard.
Yeah, I have an i5-3570k, it's 3.0 Standard.
What's all this business with external gpus? Theres so much information online but a lot of it is outdated. Anybody on here have/use one?
What's all this business with external gpus? Theres so much information online but a lot of it is outdated. Anybody on here have/use one?
Making your own is relatively cheap, but most of the premade ones are so expensive it's not worth it. The performance gains are certainly there, but it's obviously not the most desireable solution. Since Alienware is launching a proprietary version to the mainstream market, I'd wait a bit and see what competition it brings up.
they are a waste of time unless you feel like spending money on a thunderbolt 2 capable laptop and an even more expensive docking setup that you have to DIY. http://www.anandtech.com/show/7987/running-an-nvidia-gtx-780-ti-over-thunderbolt-2
I'm thinking of overclocking my i7 920 from 2.66GHz to 4.0GHz, that seems to be the most common clockspeed to set it to, but I haven't done this before so I'm concerned about the lifespan of my CPU. Currently the average temprature sits around the 50 idle, load against 60 max 63 (tested when emulating with Dolphin). My CPU is watercooled and about 5 years old if that's any useful information. PSU is 850w. Is it safe for me to OC it? I would prefer not to upgrade my CPU for another 2/3 years due to finances.

Have you dusted your case recently / re-applied thermal paste?
I don't think it's safe if you're idling at 50. Have you dusted your case recently / re-applied thermal paste?
Dusted about 2 months ago. Haven't re-applied thermal paste ever. Didn't build this rig myself. I do remember that when I first got it it idled around 30-35.
I still need an answer to my earlier question (even if it's "your sound card is fucked get a new one"), but while I'm checking the quick questions thread anyway: I have an RCA to 3.5mm adapter that I picked up from Amazon for like, 67¢ or something. If I leave it plugged into the line in jack on my computer, I can sometimes hear this loud buzzing noise. Having it unplugged guarantees no noise. Why is this, is it just poorly shielded because it's cheap probably-Chinese crap or...?
awful shielding this is where you should pay for higher quality :v: as much as i love sub dollar cables
Could also be a temporary ground loop or interference from inside the case. How close is the GPU to the soundcard, and does the buzzing change when other peripherals are plugged in or removed?
Could also be a temporary ground loop or interference from inside the case. How close is the GPU to the soundcard, and does the buzzing change when other peripherals are plugged in or removed?
It's an onboard sound chipset and I'm not sure where exactly the sound chip is, but the jack is towards the top of the case and the GPU more towards the bottom. The buzzing changes with repositioning of the cable itself, and I'm pretty sure I unplugged something once and it got quieter. It's not so bad when I have a lot of noise playing anyway, so if I'm playing something on my PS2 (the original reason I got the cable to begin with) it's hardly noticable. I'm mostly just asking these questions out of curiosity than any real problem I'm having with the noise. :v:

Assuming you've reinstalled the driver, its probably not it though.
hi my friend is having trouble with his internet it disconnects constantly almost on a timer for 5-10 seconds and at the moment he's disconnected permanently but his phone is fine his isp is AT&T its plugged directly into the computer so distance shouldn't be a problem i cant get his model number for his router at the moment his phone just went out but its an arris brand he doesnt think its throttling or something because his dl speeds are fine things he's tried: -called the isp, had a cable guy come over, problem was fixed for a week but internet went back to being shit -restarting router
Normally when this happens on my VIA sound driver I just reboot and it fixes it. Need some help diagnosing internet troubles, ISP couldn't find anything wrong. Speedtests show normal results, although the upload test seems to take longer than normal to start, but other downloads are maxing out at about 25kB/s. (Including torrents) Streaming media (even something low bandwidth like music) simply dies after a few minutes unless I restart the router and modem. I've attempted connecting directly to the modem in case the router is at fault, I've (of course) restarted everything at least once, and I've tried different devices. All show the same result. ISP couldn't notice anything wrong with the line from their end, and there isn't any throttling going on that I (or they) know of. Any other kind of tests I can run to get to the bottom of this? edit: Ran a traceroute to google for the hell of it: #2 consistently times out. (yes you probably know where I live now)

If you use a cable modem, go to your modem's diagnostic page and make sure the signal to noise ratio on each downstream channel is above 35 dB. 40 is preferred. Not sure how to test this with DSL. EDIT: #2 timing out might be because its not responding to trace route requests. That's pretty normal.

I could get my ISP to just swap it out for free but I'd likely be waiting a week. What would the second one in that list generally be? The first one is clearly my router, so should the second be the modem? Or am I misunderstanding traceroute?

Waiting a week to possibly fix it is better than doing nothing at all. Because at this point, you've determined its probably not something you can directly fix. The second is probably a router at your ISP. Trace route only indicates the hops a packet has to travel to reach its destination and the latency to those hops. Each hop is (usually) a router. A lot of routers are configured not to respond to those requests though, hence they time out. However since your still receiving response packets from routers further down the line, it can determine that there is a router there, but isn't responding for whatever reason. I'm sure it has to do with network security. Generally, the only time you should be concerned about a hop not responding, is if your trace route doesn't go any further than the router that isn't responding.
I'm not sure if this will help in diagnosing anything but I started a well-seeded torrent (Ubuntu) and it was quickly able to saturate my connection and stayed at max speed. So for some reason torrents aren't affected by this. Any idea why this would happen?

Good LGA 1150 i7 or i5 for gaming?
Specifically why do you even need an i7 for gaming? post current specs
ninja'd my edit! currently I have these on my shopping list, and I'm not sure if i should go i5 or i7 cough bottleneck cough
That isn't the worst bottleneck. Pretty much save cash on that motherboard if you aren't planning to overclock, get a H97 instead of a Z97 or swap the processor out for a 4690K. You'll need new ram as well since you can't take your DDR2 ram with you.
Good thing I'm planning on overclocking :v: I've got 16GB of RAM on my list, so I'm good on that
I can recommend Phanteks PH-TC14PE (the PWM version), it's pretty much on par with the equivalent Noctua NH-D14/15, and it's cheaper. [editline]24th November 2014[/editline] I don't know how tall those AMD RAM chips are but I think they'll be fine with the cooler unless your case is small.
