That reminds me.
I'm getting a GTX 760 to upgrade from my ancient GeForce 9500GT.

Those are my current specs, I know there will be some bottleneck on the card because of the CPU/RAM/existing system specs (and lack of PCIe 3.0) but can anyone advise me on how much the 760 will underperform? (I'm looking to upgrade my mobo ASAP anyway, but money is an issue right now).
You'll still do alright. I was still able to run most non cpu heavy games on high for the couple months last fall I had a q6600 and a gtx 680.
Thank you. I should be fine then.
the i5 it's still decent and you won't be bottlenecked at all even with a 970

You really think 620's enough for a card like that?
Also, would it be wise to buy a card that's 50 dollars more expensive than that, or would it not really be a significant increase in quality?
Thank you. I should be fine then.
Yeah, but you'll notice an additional increase when you get a new mobo/proc. My friend just dropped his phenom ii x4 (pretty much the straigh competitor your proc) for a 4690k using his same GPU (a 580, very comparable in performance to a 760) and his frames almost doubled in games like Total War. Not that he was getting bad frames before, just not nearly as good as he could.
god DAMN I keep forgetting how awful and confusing graphics card names are.
Like, I haven't really looked up PC parts since I built mine jan 2012, but they're still terrible. Where do I even BEGIN to search? Typing random numbers with "geforce" infront of them seems to work.

A 450w would be fine, 620w has some great breathing room.

With your budget you'd be looking at a gtx 770 or r9 280x or r9 290

GT/GTX 900 cards are the current for Nvidia, and AMD will soon be coming out with the R5/R7/R9 300 cards to match.

Yeah, I'd expect an increase once I get a new mobo/CPU/RAM (I'd upgrade each one individually but the mobo won't support any more RAM, or any useful newer CPU, so I'm looking at a bundle).

How's the 770? Will it be able to run games pretty good, because new releases have kind of ran like garbage for me, especially far cry 4.

Bundles are hit and miss, and those components are 1.5 generations old. Post when you're close to buying time and I csn find something for you.

Much appreciated, thank you very much.
Nothing wrong with Zotac by any means, they're just a bit shy of first tier manufacturers imo. If that 660 is still on sale for $109 buy it
Ended up finding a 660ti at Microcenter, open box, for $103. First party card too.
Fucking score.

Wow, that is a great deal. I found an old, open box itx SoC celeron board there this black friday for 13 bucks that woulda been perfect for my router, but it only had a pci slot so gigabit wasn't gunna happen.
How's the 770? Will it be able to run games pretty good, because new releases have kind of ran like garbage for me, especially far cry 4.
Definitely. However, at that price point I believe either a GTX 970 or R9 290 would be better choices. They're newer, and look more powerful according to benchmarks.
Also what are the rest of your specs? Just to make sure you don't have some old CPU that will hold you back.
Edit: wait, you posted it on the last page. Yeah, that CPU is still more than adequate.
Apologies if this isn't really the right place. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to properly set up OBS for local recording, as I've seen a few people on fp singing praise for it. I followed this video on setting it up but my performance in games was much worse than when using dxtory, to the point where the game was actually freezing for a few seconds here and there.
Post specs. If you're recording using the x264 you need to sadly use a faster profile which in return will degrade some quality.
i5 2500k @ 4.2GHz
6GB RAM
GTX 980
I'm recording onto a different hdd than the OS and the games are ran from too.
I am using x264 on the faster preset. So I need to choose a preset like veryfast or something higher up the list maybe?
Also the video I watched suggested putting the bitrate to 5000kb/s but I have no idea if that is too much or anything.
Bitrate does not matter at all unless you want to do something crazy then best pray your HDD can keep up(we're talking like 128,000kb bit rates in which case you MIGHT AS WELL be using dxtory)
Go to veryfast, if you're recording at 60 FPS veryfast should do you well, any CPU intensive games you may want to cap the frame rate. I'm guessing it's CSGO you're trying to record?
Yeah I'm just trying csgo at the moment, although I'm only recording at 30 fps at the moment to see how it goes.
in console
fps_max 75
record at 60 1920x1080 very fast at 20,000 bit rate
enjoy 60 fps recording at a glorious bit rate
I should have probably mentioned that I play on a 144hz monitor so capping the game fps might be an issue :v:
screen tearing wont appear in the video just saying
I know, I just mean I'm almost halving the number of frames I'm used to seeing. It probably won't be an issue with csgo since most stuff I ever record from it comes from demos anyway, and won't affect me playing. So it would probably only be an issue if I wanted to record 'live' stuff in other games. Maybe I could set up a bind to cap the fps and start the recording if I think something worth recording might come along
honestly just cap the FPS 1 or 2 frames above your frame rate like 145 or 146
shouldn't be too much of an issue just don't let csgo go rampant on your CPU when you're trying to record, x264 uses a shit ton of cpu and so does CSGO.
then again you have a gtx 980 you could also use nvenc when it won't actually even touch your CPU so no frame capping required
Yeah I heard about using the GPU to record too, but that has even more presets. I will have a play around with it for a few days and stop spamming the thread haha.
has anyone tried the various mainstream media boxes that are available now? i bought a nowtv box and for £20 with the 3 month entertainment bundle i dont think i lost anything but its 720p only and i cant see myself renewing the sub, the apps are really limited as well.
im considering a chromecast dongle or firetv but i would like a youtube app that supports 1080@60 and a good twitch app
I've tried a lot and continually gravitate back to just having a compact linux box for the tv.
i thought about a intel NUC but even a i3 unit is pretty expensive in comparison and you then have to think about how to control it and the interface
I want to try overclocking my CPU for my first time, I'm pretty sure I have decent hardware to be able to do it. (I have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo.)
What settings should I try out to squeeze a bit more performance out of my CPU without risking anything?

I've got one of those logitech wireless keyboards with a trackpad. Used to have this really nice bluetooth mini keyboard with a circular trackpad type thing but it broke. You can pick up a small form factor used system for dirt cheap with like a core2duo and a couple gigs of RAM that will do all that stuff very well.

I second nvenc. I record at 60fps downscaled to 1280x720 and it is awesome.
God yes.
What about CS:Go on that setup. I run CS;Go lowish/medium but FPS isn't good so far.
Hey guys, I have a quick Audacity question. For instance, I'm trying to record some audio from my digital piano and whenever I sustain some notes, Audacity seems to turn the low noise to complete silence, when all I want is for the the entire note to be recorded, regardless of how quiet it gets. It sounds really weird when I'm letting a note sustain and it all of a sudden cuts to silence. I'm guessing there's a filter in the program that can be changed to not turn it into silence but I just don't know enough about sound editing to know what option it is. Thanks for any help!
Also here's a picture of the sounds wave.
