the jack is probably just broken, or there's a bad wire joint somewhere
I don't suppose there's a reputable vendor for third-party power supplies? Asus seems to have discontinued the one I need, and the reviews I'm seeing for third-party ones are a bit scary.

Like a laptop brick? I've had good experiences with fsp's universals

Yeah, my laptop charger died. FSP doesn't seem to make one to the specs I need though - they only make up to 90W from what I can see, but my laptop's 180W.
I didn't know you could update your VGA BIOS before.

Should I be concerned about the fact that the VRAM mentioned on the BIOS driver page doesn't match my card if I want to update or is it not really worth it to update it at all?
Looks like its because of the shadow behind the window. Maybe look to see if there is a way to disable the shadow in the appearance settings in Linux?
Is there a way to not have the desktop background padding on a Linux guest's windows in seamless mode w/ Windows host? (virtualbox)
Somewhere in your DE's settings should be a thing called "Desktop Effects", or maybe "Compositing", but you look like you're using Ubuntu so probably Desktop Effects. Somewhere in there is a checkbox or something for window shadows. Turn those off.
If you would still like window shadows, turn them on in Windows (if Windows even supports them)
I'm having a weird error where, randomly, the amount of space used by system restore will jump up to 50%. It's wasting all my disk space and regardless of how many times I change the slider or delete old system restore points, it'll occasionally just jump back up to 50% and eat all my free space.
Is it somehow related to this:

What's causing that weird error? I don't have any system image backups on this drive. (Notice the current usage is higher than the max usage - even though the 20% setting seems to have stuck it has ignored it and is continuing to grow - at 240gb at the time of posting)
Looking for a cheap tablet for my sister. It needs to have a camera, good app store, and Flash support. Any suggestions?

hp stream 7 is a decent cheap as heck windows 8.1 tablet at about 99 dollars. camera isn't amazing, and only 1gb of ram. dunno if any other platform has flash, and i dunno a ton about higher end windows tablets to be honest.
maybe a surface pro 1 or 2, those are very nice if you find them for a good price. 4GB of ram, very decent processors, GPUs and displays

I don't think the Windows store has as many games on it? Also have you heard anything about the Puffin browser? It allows you to use Flash on Android and Apple tablets.
The camera doesn't need to be great, and neither does the RAM.
that kinda thing on android/iOS is very finnicky, input will be very bad and lots of things generally wont work
Hey, decided to overclock my 3570k on my ASRock Z77 Extreme4.
Just wanted to know if setting the multiplier to 42 and the offset voltage to -0.005v is a safe OC? Can't really aim higher than 42 with my Hyper 212 EVO+ and I just want stability.

Core voltage goes from 0.992 to 1.136 V. Turned off Intel SpeedStep, but I left everything else in the BIOS in their default settings (including turbo, which I believe is auto). Should I attempt to do anything else or am I perfectly fine where I am?
for stability, you want to UP the voltage, not lower it.
and we can't tell you if your chip is stable. you have to test it with prime95 or intel xtu.
My brother's computer suddenly won't power on this morning. Did the following:
* Disconnected PSU from motherboard, shorted the green wire with a black one on the PSU's ATX connector using a paperclip to see if the PSU works on its own. It does (PSU fan starts turning) (is this enough to prove the PSU isn't defective?).
* Manually shorted the power button pins on the motherboards front-panel connectors to see if the problem is with the case's power button. Still won't turn on.
* Swapped around RAM sticks, no change. Disconnected every component from mobo except for CPU, RAM and PSU. Still won't power on.
At this point I can be pretty sure the problem is the motherboard? It's a AsRock 990FX Extreme3, just over a year old so I don't think the CMOS battery ran out or anything. The CPU is an older Phenom X4 but I don't read a lot about CPUs suddenly dying (it wasn't overclocked).
Edit: he found his old mobo laying around. After building it in, his comp worked again. That should be plenty of proof that his other mobo just died.
f you don't mind my asking, why is flash support a necessity?
All my little sisters educational stuff and online games require Flash.

Potentially. I had an incident earlier this year where my motherboard failed to power on, but the PSU was fine. I fixed it by shorting the power from the PSU while the connector was plugged into the motherboard by shoving a paper clip into the back of the plug, turned it right on. Maybe give that a shot?
My motherboard is an ASRock P67 Extreme 4 Gen 3. Their boards are pretty crap, but they're usually fixable.
EDIT: Not sure what the disagree's for. This is a pretty standard troubleshooting technique, and ASRock is known for their middling quality.
Does anyone use FM transmitters in their cars? I need a new one because my current one acts all wonky and I have to angle it correctly in order for it to work, but I kinda like driving with both hands instead of having one hand trying to angle my phone while driving.

If you can, get a whole new headunit with an AUX jack. Its a bit more expensive and involved to install, but the end result is much better. I tried FM transmitters, and each one had some quirky issues or mediocre signal. My best bet was actually using a cassette adapter, until I got a new radio.

I sent my GFX card back bc I was getting stuttering but this is happening without the GFX card (Using inbuilt graphics) and the game freezes momentarily whilst the dip occurs

Well it looks like RAM drops a little and ethernet spikes right up - what was that network activity? Does that happen every time?
Does anyone remember that application that had a suite of recommended programs to install for new computers?
Installing Win7 on a new hard drive and I need to download everything.

Ninite?
You can literally download everything with Ninite

If you're going through the trouble of getting a new head unit, spring for one with USB and Bluetooth. They're not that much more expensive, though you can control your phone's music and see the song info on the LCD.
so I'm going to build a new PC and looking into mini itx because I'm sick of this enormous box on my desk
with a case like this (corsair obsidian 250d):

how is heat management in general? I'm not planning on overclocking anything and I'll buy a couple of good quality fans, but...
do I need an aftermarket cpu cooler?
do I need an entire radiator/water cooling thing like in the video??
also any thoughts in general about mini itx and this specific kind of layout would be great thanks

oh planning on a gtx 970 and some current i7

The 970 should be fine for cooling since it's facing outwards to the side of the case to bring in fresh air.
I just stuck a low profile Noctua cooler on my CPU (4th gen i5) and it keeps it always below 70 degrees. You should be fine tbh.

I've been planning a very similar build in the same case for months now. My ideal fan configuration for the 250D is to have a 200mm in the front as an intake to send cool air across the motherboard and the CPU cooler, which continues the airflow toward a pair of 80mm fans set to exhaust hot air out of the back of the case. Basically, it's moving in a straight line from front to back. I may or may not remove the 120mm fan that comes preinstalled in the side of the case, but I feel like it might divert the airflow oddly if I leave it in. That's just me, though.
I'm thinking of buying off my bro's PS3 (80GB fat one), but I'm gonna get a HDD for it. WIll any 2.5' HDD work?
Was thinking of getting this one.

AFAIK, you can use any SATA 2.5 drive. Sony's site doesn't list any capacity limitations so I assume any drive is okay.
