As far as academic applications go (browsing, Office, music, video, no real gaming), how inadequate are the older Core2-based Thinkpads compared to a more recent i5 or i3-based one? In the better processor really worth $75-$100 over a Core2 Thinkpad in the used market? Will the Core2 feel cripplingly slow when I'm used to my home PC with an i5 2500k?

Ok, I've been wondering why my computer's PSU fan has been so loud lately, and I check Task Manager and there is this process with a generic gear icon and no name. The file location is in AppData/Roaming/Data and the process is just svchost. I stopped the service and the PSU fan slowed down. I deleted the folder and everything was ok until it came back. I scanned the directory with Malwarebytes and it didn't detect anything. My only antivirus is Windows Defender since I'm on Windows 8. I'm doing a full scan with malwarebytes right now and so far it hasn't detected anything. Anything else I can do to stop it?
+ nvidia 550, how does it look?
I think you can save money by going for 1333mhz ram instead of 1600, and you could probably save money on a different power supply, for the hardware there you dont need 750w power. 1333mhz ram isnt really that much different from 1600 in all honesty.

Is there a dedicated mousepad thread? anyways, does anyone have a recommendation for a gaming mousepad? I'm thinking of getting the Steelseries QcK+ but is it worth the price?
Is there any free image hosting website that will allow me to upload 10mb+ photos?
I'd personally just spend the $75 for a i3 or i5, the GPU would most likely be much better, too.
I ended up spending a little more for a T410 with the i5. It should be pretty cool, I haven't owned a laptop in a good 6 or 7 years.

That's really annoying.
So now that the free 8.1 update is out, is windows 8 worth it now?
So now that the free 8.1 update is out, is windows 8 worth it now?
It's the exact same thing only it has a start button on the desktop now.
Just got a new laptop that has windows 8. [t]http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Login-Screen.jpg[/t] how the fuck do I change this? I want a custom picture instead of the boring colour and shit. Googling it just results in how to change the lock screen, but I already did that. I want to change the LOGIN screen, so instead of a boring colour it's a cool picture or something. Surely there is a way?
Easiest way is to move your mouse to the bottom-right corner, then click the settings gear and then "change pc settings"
You're gonna have to be a lot more specific than that. Under those settings, under the "Personalization" tab, I can only change my lock screen, start menu, and account pictures. Not the login background. All of the other tabs under those settings are irrelevant. To be more specific myself: I don't want to change my account picture. I want to change the background for the login thing. See how in that example picture I posted it's a blueish colour? Yeah I want to change that from a boring coloured background to a cool custom picture type deal.
Dropbox
Thanks, that worked perfectly.
God damn it. I went out and bought an APC for the explicit and sole purpose of preventing power surges from shutting my PC down. However, this hasn't been the case. It's drastically reduced the amounts of times my Mobo kicks in surge-protection (which basically causes the PC to shutdown) but it hasn't stopped it completely. Just now, my PC restarted to "prevent a surge from damaging the motherboard", and I lost a good 40 minutes of progress on a game I was playing. How the hell can I stop power surges from fucking my PC up? I've got it plugged straight into an APC... What else can I do? Also, another matter that is really annoying me is the fact my PC keeps "alt-tabbing" (or something) to desktop when I'm in fullscreen applications. It keeps happening every 20 minutes or so and it's quite frustrating. No crashing or anything, but it's as if I've alt-tabbed to desktop.
I'd try dusting it out first, and if that doesn't work, I'd replace the thermal paste.
Yeah Thanks. I did both, the average is now around 50C at idle, better, but not great, it could just be because the card is based on the fermi architecture.
Yeah Thanks. I did both, the average is now around 50C at idle, better, but not great, it could just be because the card is based on the fermi architecture.
50c idle on a fermi card is about as cold as it's going to get. My GTX 480 idles around 70c.
Is there a silent keyboard you guys could recommend? I don't want the tickety tackety echoing through the house at night.
I have one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236112&Tpk=asus%20ve247h&IsVirtualParent=1 I like it a lot I would like to get another I would also like to get a dual monitor stand I would like to know which is the best cheapest one do you guys think thanks
I'm having an issue with my home networking, for some reason when my desktop is on, the WiFi in our house has a tendency to slow to a crawl, but when i check if I'm downloading anything there's nothing being downloaded and i'm just using 25kbps total. It gets even worse at night with our WiFI dropping to 0.11Mb/s of our rated 11Mb/s download speed, and WiFi returns to that only as soon as my computer is off. I don't understand? Edit It's also unpredictable, sometimes the internet is fairly fast and sometimes it slows down. This only happens when my desktop is on
Perhaps update network drivers or maybe you have some torrents going?
Your desktop might be running in B mode perhaps and slowing it down significantly to 11Mbps.
I'm fixing a Pavilion G7 which had a dead hard drive. I get the replacement HDD (500GB WD Black) and load up the Windows 7 Home Premium X64 installer from my Zalman VE200SE (Emulates a USB DVD drive). It complains about not finding a HDD and prompts for a driver. I go to HP's site and find that they have an installer for the Intel Rapid Storage Matrix driver, though I can't get to the actual drivers by extracting it. 7zip can't open the cab files. I finally find INF versions on Intel's site that the Windows 7 setup says is compatible, though when I load it I get a "No new devices could be found. Make sure the driver files are correct and located on the driver installation media". The BIOS has very little in it, definitely nothing useful to make the HDD controller go into IDE mode. I'm downloading SP1 right now, though if anyone has any other recommendations I'll be happy to try them.
Have you tried using a linux bootUSB or something of the sort (make one in YUMI) to see if the hard drive is recognized [editline]28th June 2013[/editline] shouldn't need any sorta fancy AHCI drivers to use a normal drive
Well then, Windows 7 SP1 seems to be installing just fine.
