what do you mean power surges?
My computer will shut-down instantly (no logging off or that, it'll power down as if I pulled the plug) and then it'll start back up and I'll be greeted by an ASUS screen that tells me the Motherboard shut the PC down due to a power surge, and it shut down to prevent hardware damage.
[editline]13th July 2013[/editline]
Also, to quickly clarify, that PSU is more than decent for my graphics card, right?
thats not really a power surge, and that PSU is more than enough for your PC. It could probably run 560 TIs in SLI. Are your temps fine? In my experience shut downs like that are usually caused by an overheating component. I think if it was a power issue the PSU wouldn't turn back on for a while afterwards.
Oh, it isn't? Because the ASUS screen says it is and that's what's thrown me off this entire time. I'm not too sure about my temps when I'm running my games, but IIRC they've been alright. Not overheating or anything, and my room is cold.

My idle temps are fine, and I'm pretty sure when I'm in a graphic intense game, they don't get too exceedingly high.
And the thing with the PSU not turning back on for a while afterwards (if it was a power issue), could the fact that my mobo is force-shutting down my PC be protecting my PSU, so it starts back up just fine?
[editline]13th July 2013[/editline]
I'm just hoping to get this fixed ASAP cause I can't play Total War or Anno without it shitting on me and making me lose tonnes of progress cause my PC decides to shut down with no warning.

Ah, the motherboards reporting a power surge? You can disable that in the bios, apparently. It's probably just a quick change in power draw causing it, you have a good PSU, I suggest just turning off the anti surge setting in the BIOS.

I was thinking of doing that, but I'm real scared of potentially fucking myself over. I'm worried if there is a genuine problem, and by turning this feature off in the BIOS, I'll let my stuff get fried.
I guess I might as well, I've got a decent enough APC that acts as a powersurge protector so - fingers crossed - I should be alright.

There are reports that it's overly sensitive, I have no doubts you'll be fine with it off based on what you've said.
What's a good site to buy electronics like relays, temp sensors, movement sensors and such? Need some stuff for a project.
[editline]12th July 2013[/editline]
Also, can someone recommend a good network HDD or network HDD enclosure? 1TB at least.

Reliable gigabit wireless router that can use tomato, DD-WRT, or other open source firmware as well!
I always use eBay for parts since you have a bunch of options in once place. If I want cheap and can wait, I'll always order stuff from Hong Kong. If I don't want to wait for 3-4 weeks, I'll filter by Canada and see if I can get it from here, if not I order from the US.
I hear great things about Synology and QNAP devices.

They're both under $160 before HDDs.
I use a Linksys E2000, it's an older model though I got one for a good price on eBay. My only real issues with it is that it doesn't run 2.4GHz and 5GHz at the same time and there's no external antennas. That said, I put it on the main floor of our house and we get a good signal everywhere. File transfers through wifi are a little over 100 megabits.
The Asus N66U is another good router, though it's expensive.
I was thinking of just getting a ITX pc with an atom CPU, and a switch, and just using that for HDD and as a router, and simply getting a AP for wireless. openWRT has a x86 release.
I feel like a stupid. I have an old LCD 19' monitor, and I always used 75hz refresh rate instead of 60hz because I found it better for my eyes.
The videocards I used with this monitor were GeForce 6800 and later GTX 260.
Now I just swaped GTX 260 with 760, everything works fine but I found that image on monitor seems like it was 60hz for me.
So I'm checking out the settings: it's 75hz, why? I always felt good on 75hz, and now I'm not, then I try to set 60hz and what the hell it's like 75hz for me.
One of my buddies is telling me that it's minor incompability of monitor with my videocard, I don't believe him as for me it's just a signal the monitor receives.
The signal goes via DVI -> VGA (from videocard to monitor)
So, why it feels like refresh rates were swapped?
Logitech K310 as a family computer keyboard.
Yay or Nay

The only thing I can think of is that your VGA cable can't handle the bandwidth required for the resolution you're running at 75hz, making it look worse... I suggest you get a digital connection (DVI->DVI or HDMI).
Hi there i would like to know if it would be possible to use a vr headset such as the oculus rift with 2 mounted camera.
Lets say i want to make some kind of hi-tech cosplay using the oculus as a vision enhancement system.
For instance plug the rift to a small device like a laptop then use the double camera to see with the rift and maybe add a small software allowing you to take pictures or even zoom in/out.
[editline]14th July 2013[/editline]
Or just creating a program using both cameras and use de vr goggle as a monitor.

You'd need the latency to be really small.
Yeah the oculus rift have a very very low latency i guess 2 hd cameras would work fine. i am mostly interested to the setup if it is really possible.
Also. Is there some kind of monitor i can buy where i can plug a usb cam to it? i got a "snake" cam to make experiment. Mostly for cosplay works but now i am looking for a small monitor
The consumer rift might have cameras on it, if the presentation slides are any indication.
Oculus does have its own forums btw.
So, my Phenom II X4 955 is really hot lately. Its idle (yes, idle) temp is around 98c-105c!

Reapply thermal paste
with temps that hot the heat sink probably isn't even latched down, I'd imagine a dry heat sink would dissipate better than that.

I'm surprised your computer isn't shutting itself down because of that heat. My old 955BE would instantly crash if it topped 63-68C

Yeah, it turned out that the heat sink didn't even latched down for some reason. I've adjusted it and reapplied the thermal paste, everything is fine now. Thanks.
I was just curious, what is a safe under-load temp for my card (ATI HD 7950)?
In games, it goes from anywhere to 55c-75c.

A GPU normally handles higher temperatures. But It's usually safe up to perhaps 85c, Though certainly under 80c is preferable. If it's over 85c, you really need to investigate.

You're fine. That's just AMD.

To the disagrees: his CPU was running at 99ºC and didn't auto-shut off. Grade-A AMD technology folks.
I'm probably going to be getting a Sony Vaio Pro next paycheck if everything goes to plan, though I have a question about Windows 8 licences. I need Windows 8 Pro since it has hyper-v, which we use at school. I already have it on my current laptop since I have a Dreamspark key, though I want Windows 8 on my HTPC, but it doesn't need to be pro.
Could I take the regular Windows 8 key from the new laptop and use it on another computer, then use my existing Pro key on the new laptop?

The basic rule is:
One key per installation.
You can move them around and activate new installs with already used keys as you wish.
I was wondering if this GPU (Radeon HD6670) can CrossFire with this APU (Radeon HD 7480D).
No idea how this would work. Recently just got the APU, and a friend gave me his old GPU.

Are facepunch people selling vpn services?
What's a good temperature monitoring program? I want to be able to monitor my heat levels better because I'm having a lot of problems lately and it's getting hard to pinpoint the cause, (I'm guessing it's either heat related, driver related, or just the old I-haven't-reformatted-my-computer-in-years (because I lost the disc) related).
I've also considered underclocking several times due to heating problems, and that was when I had air conditioning. I don't anymore and the summer hasn't been nice to my GPU (560 Ti, aka factory overclocked 560). What are the risks to underclocking and how difficult would that be to achieve do?
