Does anyone know what's going on with the newest Windows 7 update? My computer just auto dl'd it and now half the shit on my computer is corrupted :v:

Nothing's wrong on my end, I think it might just be something on your end.
So I am probably going to get a 250 GB SSD soon. I currently have windows and all my programs on one 500GB HDD, all on the same partition. If I get the SSD I will want the OS and some select steam games on there. I know how to move steam games so I just want to know:
Is it possible / viable to move my OS from my hard drive to my SSD without having to reinstall anything?

If less than 250GB of your current drive is used, you can use imaging software to clone your disk on the SSD. I have done this at work with Symantec Ghost. It's not exactly cheap software (it's enterprise stuff), but there are probably other options that work just as well.
Yeah but I don't want to move everything onto it. Ideally just the OS and then I can move games / software to it as I choose.
I never realized it would be this complex. Even if I just did a clean install I don't know how I would make it so that ONLY windows is on the SSD, not program files etc because all that stuff is set up when you install windows.

Yea I think windows updated last night and closed everything I was working on, vegas, 15 chrome windows with like 500 tabs, after effects, photoshop, etc. I save but it's still really fucking annoying. I fucking hate windows update sometimes. Like don't auto restart if there is shit open you cunt
so i tried setting up dual monitors, after failing pretty hard at it i decided to just use my one superior monitor and be happy about it.
after i changed the settings back to one monitor and turned my computer off for the day i found out that it just hangs itself on the "starting windows" screen, the computer itself is fine but the monitor doesnt go past that screen, despite me being able to start tf2 by muscle memory and hearing the tf2 music.
anyone know how to fix this? i tried unplugging the monitor and everything else, but my bet would be that i have to reinstall the driver for the monitor but i cant do that if i cant see anything!

You really can't have only Windows on the SSD, if what you mean is having only like the actual windows folder on the SSD. As for programs you install after you install windows, it's pretty much just a matter of picking 'custom installation' instead of the standard one in installers. That way you can choose another install directory instead of the default program files folder. If you really want to get technical, you can probably move the program files folder to another disk, and create a symlink (think shortcut, except you can open it like a folder) to it on the OS drive. This can also be useful for things that are stored in appdata, like the Spotify offline cache back when you couldn't move it (it could get up to several gigs in size, depending on how many offline tracks you had).
That said, I'm not sure why you would want to have all programs on other drives when you have a 250GB SSD. Stuff like skype and other small programs don't take up much space, but you benefit so much from having it on the SSD when you boot windows (because all the little programs are loading at once, which is very slow on a mechanical harddisk). I can understand bigger programs like the office suite or adobe products, even though they also get noticeable speed improvements from being installed on an SSD.
Oh god what the heck is going on..
I can't connect to steampowered.com or steamcommunity.com and some other sites are inaccessible too.
Ping and tracert give connection timeouts and Steam shows a 118 error.
Does anyone know what to do? Both my computer and phone are unable to connect.

Eh, apparently this is happening to a lot of people.
Just checked Newegg, forgot they don't even sale 5770s anymore lol
If you can get a used one or somehow find a new one for less than $100 I'd do it. It's not like you use all monitors at once for gaming right?
I was thinking used for ~$50 if I can find that. And yeah, just one but it's 120Hz so I like to get high FPS.
Do Arduino questions go here? I can't find the megathread.
I recently had to lay a Logitech G15 to rest, and the biggest thing I miss is the mini screen. Equipped with LCD Miscellany, it's saved me countless times. The rest of the keyboard was shit though, including the price, so I'm not going to get another one. Here's a reference picture:

If I buy an Arduino and a TFT screen, is it possible for it to connect with a program running on the host computer which provides it with datetime, cpu/network usage, ping, etc.? Which shields/boards do I have to buy?
You don't need an Arduino, there are USB LCDs that can be controlled with something like LCD Smartie on you computer.
I was going to show you something like this:

But then I came across this thing right here:

Which looks fucking awesome and I'm going to buy one tonight.
They also have this one, which looks very similar though is made for a different program, it seems like the UI looks nicer on that one:

Just to be clear, you can make those things display whatever you want right? Not just sys info?
Just to be clear, you can make those things display whatever you want right? Not just sys info?
The second one claims it comes with a C# library. So.. Possibly?

why is this happening
Just to be clear, you can make those things display whatever you want right? Not just sys info?
Correct, the first two will support LCD Smartie, which you can download and look at the features without needing to connect an LCD. The last one uses something called "Goverlay", which I've never heard of before but it looks pretty interesting.
The first one is probably using some kind of USB to serial chip, so it would be pretty easy to talk to with any programming language. The second one seems to have python and C# libraries, so a custom program could be made.

You can resize the URL bar by dragging the right side of it
On Firefox. I have my search bar set to Bing, But if search something in the URL bar it does a Google search. Anyway to change this?

Update your browser, the latest one seems to fix this by obeying whatever the search engine is in the search bar.

so simple, thx

If you want something cheaper, you can get this for $21:

Or for $16, you can get something smaller for $16:

I have a Western Digital Passport 1TB External HDD, but I want to be able to use it for Mac and Windows, it seems that I have to reformat it and can only use it to read/write on one OS and only read on the other. Is there a way I can create two partitions on it? Maybe like three quarters of the storage as NTFS and the last quarter FAT32?

Why would you ever format that as FAT32

Yes. In Windows, you need to go to Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management, then delete the current volume on the disk and create two smaller ones in its place. OS X has a similar way to do things.
However, FAT32 or exFAT should be read/write under both. Let me give you a quick rundown on file systems:
NTFS: Only safely writeable under Windows. Read-only in OS X. Main thing about it is really detailed permissions and security.
HFS+: Only writeable under OS X. Windows doesn't even have drivers unless you install the Boot Camp utilities.
FAT32: Works absolutely anywhere, but since it dates back to Windows 95, it has some limits, like a maximum file size of 4GB.
exFAT: Works in Windows (although XP and Vista don't have it out-of-the-box) and OS X, although other systems, particularly non-PCs, have major issues. Fixes most FAT32 issues.
Why would you ever format that as FAT32
If it is even possible creating two partitions on the external HDD, what would you recommend me making the two partitions as? NTFS and what?
Can you not just go to disk management and select how big of partitions you want and format them in whatever format you want? Though I'm not sure why you'd want two partitions if you can just use exFAT (see below)
Also if you're only using OSX and Windows (looks like your main computer is 7 from user agent), and you want to have read/write for both OS's, exFAT is the way to go like gmain said. If you use Linux or something then absolutely don't use exFAT. FAT32 is terrible because you can't have files bigger than 4GB, effectively rendering the drive useless, and NTFS doesn't play too nicely with OSX.
Why would you ever format that as FAT32
Because of a situation exactly like this.
NTFS can't be written to under OS X (at least, not without a lot of really complex setup using outdated third-party drivers). HFS+ can't be written to under Windows. It makes perfect sense for such a drive to be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.

I know all that I was just pointing out that the 4GB cap is useless for a drive as big as a 1TB whose primary function will probably be image backups or backing up video files or something.
And notice I didn't say anything about exFAT, just FAT32
