how difficult and dangerous is overclocking? Is it possible to do on a laptop (with a dedicated card, of course)? I don't want to do it if I have a good chance of frying my PC.
I think i'll just leave it alone, my motherboard and cpu along with my gpu are brand new. Only had this setup for a month and i dont think i should be messin around with the voltage and destroy everything.

you can't hurt anything without trying really, really hard (flashing your card's bios with one that has a higher voltage limit)
the max voltage you can set in afterburner is the maximum voltage that AMD considers safe, and is slightly lower than what your card can actually take

overclocking nowadays is extremely simple, and because of how mainstream it has become, many safety measures have been implemented that'll prevent you from causing any harm to your components
that, on top of the huge amount of resources you can find everywhere about safely overclocking (guides dedicated to individual graphics cards/CPUs/RAM modules, threads filled with people's overclock settings, safe temperatures, voltages, etc.), means there's absolutely no danger in it
I wouldn't do it on a laptop though
Is my PSU fine for this build?

heat is more of a problem in laptops but it's certainly feasible, just don't overclock by a lot the first time around. increments of 10mhz on the core clock until you start getting artifacts or high temps, then once either of those happens just drop it by 20 or 30mhz.

I already mentioned this in your PC Building thread and linked you to SEVERAL other options that were cheaper or better for the same price.
Well for one you can get a better power supply for cheaper. This isn't just for you, more of a PSA to everyone who thinks Corsair "makes" (rebrands) the best power supplies.
600W - 750W Bronze modular PSU's:

Seriously people, there are way better value and performing power supplies. Not saying Corsair are bad quality or anything, it's just 99% of the time (unless you're looking at the CX series) there will be a better deal out there.
The Sabertooth motherboard is a huge waste, you're spending nearly as much on the motherboard as on the processor when it has next to nothing to do with performance. Just go with either of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131874 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128514.
Under the circumstances that I'm in, I can only buy my parts from this one Australian store which don't have any of the PSUs you suggested available.

well fuck nevermind then, is it pccasegear that you're ordering from? if you're ever going to add another 7970 later on then spend a little more for one of these

I'd say the Strider Plus is your best bet
Yeah I'm buying from PCCG. I'll purchase the Strider Plus then.

molex adapters are sketchy as fuck and the HX650 for some terrible reason only has 2 pcie connectors.
[editline]9th March 2013[/editline]
and it's only $6 more lol
Is Strider Plus the only option? I haven't heard much anything about Silverstone PSU's are they any good?
I'm not getting any taskbar notification bubbles (dropbox, sharex etc). At first I thought this was a bug in the dropbox beta available on the forums, but it turns out I'm not getting ANY taskbar notifications. I've already checked group policy editor, and notification settings are default.
The only thing I can think of interfering is start8, but I can't find anything about this problem at all and if it really was start8 you'd think there were some reports of this bug.
Anyone know what's wrong?
Cheapest solution for a Plex Media Center? I saw somebody is developing it for the Raspberry pi, but I don't know how well it works, and using the XBMC plugin doesn't seem as fluent, nor do I think I can control it from my phone / tablet. Also looked at the Intel NUC - have no clue where to get a drive for that though.

Raspbmc works fine and can be controlled from your phone (at least on android) by Yatse.
Raspbmc also has support for hdmi-cec meaning you can control xbmc with your tv remote *if* your tv supports hdmi-cec.
Will a Core 2 Duo work with a laptop that uses a 910GM chipset?

PleXBMC just doesn't seem very good at all.. and again, not native.. Plex is friggin awesome and I'm rocking it elsewhere, can watch movies on tablet, pc, laptop etc. even when I'm out (It streams from my server). I can also select a movie or tv series or whatever it is from the Android app and tell it to open on tv, it also has a remote.

Silverstone PSU's are great quality, you won't have an issue.
I got my i5 3570k today. I have installed it and everything seems to be working. However I have noticed the temps seem kind of strange.
At idle the temps on cores 1 & 2 are around 20 degrees (c), but core 4 is a little (4-5) more and core 3 is almost 10 more.
This seems kind of strange. Any insight?
Could it be due to poor thermal paste application? I used about a bb sized blob of Arctic silver 5 in the center.

My core 3 is always slightly hotter than the rest, but not that much.

either that or your heatsink isn't seated properly

That sounds awesome, I'll have to try it out. My dad is already used to the HTPC's XBMC setup, though...
how do i adjust the core voltage in msi afterburner? I clicked unlock voltage control and monitoring in the settings but it is still greyed out.

I know nothing of overclocking, but I believe I've heard some variants of cards have features like these locked. Might be the motherboard too. (But then again, I know nothing)
1st - Dowload the latest MSI AfterBurner link located in Update above and install.
2nd - Locate the folder where MSI Afterburner installed to, open it, and locate the CFG file named MSIAfterburner. When you 1st dbl click this file it will ask you what program you want to use to open it, choose "Notepad" and click "ok" Once you have the MSIAfterburner CFG file open in notepad you need to change a couple of settings near the bottom:
UnofficialOverclockingEULA = I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it
UnofficialOverclockingMode = 1 (to keep PowerPlay active (may not work on old ASICs), 2 to traditionally disable PowerPlay or to 0 to temporary disable unofficial overclocking path)<--Do not type this, just for reference I have mine set to = 1
After you have made these changes, DO NOT forget to click "file" and "save" before exiting notepad, or your changes will not take into effect!
I change those lines and my screen starts shaking?????
Shaking?
yes my screen started shaking and screen tearing. It also didn't unlock the voltage for me.
What's your graphics card?
Radeon HD 7700
