my HDD has been clogging up lately and I've no clue where or what is taking so much space. is there a function I can use to locate folders with a lot of GB's in it or locate useless junk taking up space?

oh and, why are my steam downloads going like a rollercoaster? there is nothing wrong with my internet, but the downloads keep stopping and starting. task manager is indicating that a lot of HDD activity is going on

Try SpaceSniffler to find out what's taking up your hard disk space.

Also, does anyone know where to get some nice Windows 8 themes which affect the taskbar as well?
Or is this still in development? I like to have something else than the standard Windows 8 appearance.
Just installed it on my main PC by the way.
Is a better contrast ratio than 1000:1 of any significant value for a monitor in gaming?
1000:1 is good, but if they say 100,000k or more it's dynamic, thus shit.

But Space Sniffer is still superior B)
Is it possible to use a retail (or downloaded directly from Microsoft) Windows 7 install DVD and activate it with an OEM key? I have a laptop with a dead hard drive and no reinstallation discs, and want to just use my retail DVD to install Windows 7 then activate with the OEM key on the sticker on the back of the laptop.
It's an HP laptop if that matters.

VLC's good on Windows, and if it has a Mac build I bet it's good on that too.

I've used VLC for years but I'm wondering if there's something better
Not sure where to ask this so I'm putting it here. I have an xbox 360 wireless controller adapter that I use to play some PC games. Since I got this new laptop, whenever I use the device windows constantly keeps making the device plug/unplug sound. It works perfectly other than this small annoyance. This didn't happen when I used it on my older PC. I've tried uninstalling the device and plugging it back in.
Everything else I use via USB does not have this issue.
Here's the adapter I'm talking about: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000HZFCT2

If there's something better for video, I haven't found it.

vlc is just 'standard' for playing video. you can't use external plugins with it and it has seeking problems

H&S questions
which AV program should i get i need to replace avg and i already have malware bytes (i know there is no "best" av so i would prefer a balance av program with a decent array of tools that are actually decent as well, jack of all trades basically)

Not anything in particular I just love linux specifically Mint and Fedora and I do want to build a machine based around one of them I just needed to know how many problems I was in for.

Hey guys should I be worried?
I'm going to guess that's either a bug, or you've done something where it just writes and reads infinitely from the SSD.

Your drive should be fine, must be a bug. You've only written 5.5TB to the drive, it should be good for atleast 120TB.

The force 3 is a solid drive.
Use the SSD toolbox from corsair.
Hey buds, so my PC decided to shut off out of the blue earlier tonight, and it is refusing to boot back up; I'm pressing the power button and its not doing a damn thing. I can see its still supplying power to the motherboard because I can see an LED is still on inside but aside from that I can't see any signs of life.
Before this it would take the thing a good 5-10 mins to warm up before being able to bout if disconnected from power, which in itself seemed weird and might have been a precursor to what just happened.
How likely is the problem to be down to the PSU? And if so what's a cheap model that could power my current system (C2D e6750 and 8800gt)? Or if it is more likely to be something else what could out possibly be? I don't really want to pump more money into this than I want to since I'll finally be getting a new rig in 6 months.
I'll try it in the morning and crack it open if it still refuses to boot.
I currently have a Linksys EA6500 AC router and just got an Linksys WUMC710 bridge today so I can get ethernet in my room.
The router is on the other side of the house and the AC bridge has a good connection but the regular WiFi for my phone, laptop, Xbox, etc, is really bad, could I connect an old router to the bridge and use it as a makeshift WiFi extender?
So I'm about to set up my own person internet connection, and I need recommendations for a router. I have no idea what any of the specs on the routers in the OP mean but I have wireless GBN in my computer and it will only have to go a meter or so, and I can get a meter long cable very easily if need be. I'll be getting ADSL, how much should I be looking at spending? I'd like to have wifi for my phone but its not super necessary. I'll be the only one using it 99.99% of the time.
According to the ISP site (Bigpond Australia) ADSL 2 is their elite speed plans whereas ADSL is their turbo plans, when I search for availability it only gives me elite plans so I guess I'm adsl2.

Thats pretty much my selection of routers, that site is kinda like Australias Newegg as far as I can tell. I'm willing to spend whatever but I'd prefer it to be as cheap as possible without compromising on stuff I'll need.
Will I need a modem too? I'm not sure.

SSD toolbox comes up with the same value. I think I'm just going to leave it until it dies.
