what would you guys upgrade on this thing and what would it be? getting two 6870's for free in october so not so worried about the GPU.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236331 Thoughts on this? I'd like to start saving up money to get 3 new monitors. I have the following requirements: 24"-27" (24 is just fine, more than 27 is too big for me) 1080 or 1200 resolution HDCP compliant (but really, can you even find new non HDCP's anymore?) At least 1 HDMI input USB hub would be nice, but is optional.
What's the go-to program for transcoding video on Windows these days? Still the nightly builds of Handbrake? I'd google it but "free video transcoder" is one of those searches that strikes me as being dangerous to install things from I don't need to deal with any obscure formats I just need to turn a 1080p mp4 into a 720p one so my old laptop can play it without lagging to hell
Handbrake.
Handbrake.
Trying out the latest handbrake nightly, it's improved a hell of a lot from a year ago
Help. Using cpu-z I notice my core speed stays very high all the time. 4400mhz My OC is 4.4 however it stays at 4.4, shouldn't it go down when not doing high intensive cpu things?

So my laptop seemed to be running pretty hot so I opened it up and looked inside. I noticed this piece of plastic under a part of the heatsink: [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13781308/P1000351.JPG[/t] In the hardware maintenance manual it says to remove the piece of plastic: [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13781308/ShareX/2013-09/2013-09-29_10-18-12.png[/t] Should I remove it? would it void warranty or something? Would it have any noticeable effect on the temperatures? Also, it might be worth mentioning that the fan was broken when I got it so I sent it back to get it fixed, so they might have forgotten to remove the plastic bit.
first pic isn't working
Odd, randomly disappeared out of my dropbox. Should be fixed now. [editline]e[/editline] And are ~60 C idle temperatures abnormally high for a laptop? (i3-3130M, integrated graphics)
Odd, randomly disappeared out of my dropbox. Should be fixed now. [editline]e[/editline] And are ~60 C idle temperatures abnormally high for a laptop? (i3-3130M, integrated graphics)
Well, it's worrying, let me say that. It's not happy, but this temperature isn't harmful to the CPU on the short term. in ~2 years this will probably cause damage to the CPU. But even then, you should get it fixed. 'Cause I don't want to know the temperatures on high load.

(i3-3130M, integrated graphics)
if the fan's quiet, it's likely just prioritizing the noise over temp, 60c isn't abnormally hot, my laptop's i5 is idling at 67c right now and i've never had any problems.
When it comes to GPUs and gaming, is there any whooping difference in FPS between a 2GB card and a 4GB card?
When it comes to GPUs and gaming, is there any whooping difference in FPS between a 2GB card and a 4GB card?
If you're running the game at 4K, with texture sizes to match.
When it comes to GPUs and gaming, is there any whooping difference in FPS between a 2GB card and a 4GB card?
Depends if the game needs 4GB of video memory or not. I can assure you most games hardly need 2GB of video memory. 4GB could increase load performance though, since it'll never have to unload anything. :u The only exception to only needing 2GB video memory is if you love installing "HD texture packs".

My laptop has integrated graphics (i3-3130M). 1) Does the integrated graphics use the system RAM? 2) Would getting faster RAM let me play games with higher graphics settings? I have 8gb 1600Mhz right now 3) How would I find out what speed memory I can put in my laptop?
My laptop has integrated graphics (i3-3130M). 1) Does the integrated graphics use the system RAM? 2) Would getting faster RAM let me play games with higher graphics settings? 3) How would I find out what speed memory I can put in my laptop?
1) I believe it uses it's own memory, I'm not sure how it works if it runs out though. 2) The mhz of RAM is practically exactly the same in normal circumstances, you won't see the difference. 3) If you can pull out the current stick(s) in your laptop, you can probably go with a step up from what you currently have. (E.G: if you have 1600, you can try 1866), the worst it'll do is run at the best it can.
Is there a way to play DDS tapes without a DDS player?
My laptop has integrated graphics (i3-3130M). 1) Does the integrated graphics use the system RAM? 2) Would getting faster RAM let me play games with higher graphics settings? I have 8gb 1600Mhz right now 3) How would I find out what speed memory I can put in my laptop?
1) Yes, although some (not all) Haswell chips have some on-die memory for the GPU as well. Unless things have changed since my last IGPU, it allocates this statically at boot time. 2) Yes, but it may not be worth the cost. Most IGPUs (even most discrete GPUs) are limited by memory bandwidth. Anandtech recently did a study of this, specifically looking at Haswell but applicable to any IGPU. They concluded that the sweet spot of price/performance is around 2133-2400MHz. However, that was for desktops, which support much higher memory speeds. Which brings us to: 3) There are two things that need to support the memory speed in order for it to work - the CPU and the motherboard. You would have to check with your laptop manufacturer to find what memory speeds are supported, but the processor only supports DDR3-1600. You might be able to crank the processor up to support higher memory speeds, but I would not rely on that.

Most OEMs have it on their website.
How do I create flashing text like at the end of this video in Sony Vegas 11? (Warning, EAR RAPE) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tf7yDgp57c , I have Googled like fuck and can't find anything.
does anyone here know why my ticker won't work? it stays like that and won't show the activity or whatever it is called
The Ticker is broken here as well, I think it has been removed or something.
The Ticker is broken here as well, I think it has been removed or something.
damn, sounds likely since it's gone for you too. such a shame, but would be nice to have a confirmation of that from a mod or another person with the same issue
[t]http://puu.sh/4E6bj.png[/t] It's alright over here. [editline]30th September 2013[/editline]
How do I create flashing text like at the end of this video in Sony Vegas 11? you make a keyframe with the text and then you make a keyframe with no text and then you make a keyframe with text and then you make a keyframe with no text and then you make a keyframe with text and then you make a keyframe with no text and then you make a keyframe with text

Ok should I do anything before touching the inside components of my PC? I'm scared of static shocks to me and to my system. Also do I touch metal? Anyway I got this in my room, should I touch this before touching my PC components? Anyway just confused, need help! http://www.bathroomsupercentre.com/guides/images/radiator.jpg
I'm in the UK and I'm looking for a relatively cheap phone with a good internet plan (or maybe even just some kind of device with mobile internet). I'm not too fussed about texts and calls because most of the communication I do is through the internet with most people and it's getting frustrating needing to be at home to message people via Facebook and stuff like that to organise occasions. I don't know much about phones at all - I've never had a contract in my life and the last phone I bought was pay as you go with 6 months of free internet for £80. [editline]30th September 2013[/editline] Where would I find something that fulfills this purpose?
