i miss u
i miss me too (i'm mostly hanging out in telegram these days, though i do poke into the thread to see how y'all are doing sometimes)
So I started a new job Monday at Black and Veatch. I, a 25 year old scrublord with no college education, managed to land a gig pulling $43k/year at one of the top telecom engineering firms in the country. Its rather odd to be issued a company laptop that is also simultaneously my complete workstation. Damn thing out-classes my home desktop, but this gig is fucking LIT fam.

Shit, this is technically my third account, although the other two got unbanned on one of the birthday things. I mainly use this one because GMan003 has a really obnoxious title. (Also, I really really need to make a new avatar, been using this for fucking forever and it kinda sucks)

Can't remember what it was. Not a core element of the dream, just a point I remember. I have very mundane dreams.

Oh damn, I am in a club so drunk I feel like the sound is speed up but my friends say it is at the real speed. Am I too drunk? At least the sound is fine and I don't feel like the highs are going to kill my eardrums this time. (User was banned for this post ("PUI" - Novangel))
drink plenty of water

My T470s arrived early! [t]http://i.imgur.com/5bjmOn8.jpg[/t] The touchpad and keyboard are great. I'm very impressed with the precision touchpad thing that microsoft has going on, it's much nicer to use than the touchpad on my Vaio Pro 13. It also has an ethernet port, barely. If they made the chassis a millimeter thinner I don't think they could have pulled off ethernet.
It's not a real computer if you can't fit an ethernet port.
It's not a real computer if you can't fit an ethernet port.
How are you meant to wire into your server stack without a port?
Is it normal to be able to hear people turning fans (or anything with a higher power draw than an average incandescent lightbulb) on and off in your house through your analogue headphones?? I'm not the one experiencing this, someone else in the house is, but holy shit is it weird. His entire setup isn't grounded though (and to fix that would cost us money we don't have-- we can't even afford a cheeseburger from McDonald's right now we're so broke) which, may be contributing to that.

Sure you can't just ground it yourself? It's not very complex.
So I found out this now in Google Chrome: when you copy and paste a recently downloaded file from the download bar where it automatically shows up, drag it to another drive to copy, all other Chrome windows will wait until the file is done transfering.
It's a grounding issue for sure. Sure you can't just ground it yourself? It's not very complex.
Are there methods that don't require spending even a penny to do, don't make a mess of things, and don't cause a shock hazard for clumsy people?
Are there methods that don't require spending even a penny to do, don't make a mess of things, and don't cause a shock hazard for clumsy people?
It all depends on the electrical setup of your building. You may have to either check whether a grounding wire (usually a striped green and yellow wire) exists at all in the junctions above your plugs, then by process of elimination work your way to the fuse box and connect the grounding wire. Needless to say I would wholeheartedly recommend you get a qualified electrician to do all this. It is very easy to do a mistake and create a short-circuit, which will elegantly burn your building down in a few minutes after turning the fuse box back on.
Bleh. That means it's pretty much out of the question, since hiring one is, again, money we don't have. This house is probably gonna fuckin' burn down someday anyways, we all know it's incredibly shittily wired due to the incompetent jackass that renovated it years ago that duped my grandma; the previous owner of the house. There's hardly an outlet one in here that's actually grounded properly, or at all. The house is also incredibly old. Hell, I don't even think my room is grounded, I can't actually tell because believe it or not I cannot even find the God damn outlet it's plugged into since the cable to it all leads off into the dark void behind my dresser, so I just have to pray that my ludicrously overqualified for the job industrial sized powerstrip will save my shit in the event something awful happens. In short I think I've just had the horrible realization that my home is a flaming disaster waiting to happen and there's nothing we can do about it because we're borderline poor and about to get poorer. :surrender:

You also don't need to find the outlet, since you can check the grounding fault at your power strip just the same.
Oh, I forgot about that. I swear I'm smart. Well the ground light is off so I guess that confirms my suspicion? It makes sense really, my room is right next to the aforementioned other ungrounded room, so why would mine be grounded but the other not. Welp. Like I said, there ain't shit anyone can do about it until I/my family gets out of this several year long financial hole we've been stuck in. Can't even afford to fix our AC. So if I don't die of a heatstroke first, if my shit fries, my shit fries. Short of just never using my computer again and unplugging everything until it gets rectified (which would likely be actual years), there'd be nothing I could've done to prevent it.
You do realize grounding isn't to save your PC but your life?

All in a handy step-by-step guide: Step 1. Obtain any decently sized Aluminum rod and polish it of all the dirt (about 1-2 meters long should do) Step 2. Find an area outside just near a window or something Step 3. Hammer that rod into the ground as far as it will go, leave about 10-20 centimeters length Step 4. Take power strip apart Step 5. Connect a cable joining the grounding part to the rod you just inserted outside I'm pretty sure when people design buildings they do the above steps to ensure proper grounding. I know one of my electrical installation teachers in high school told me about this method and how some people just replicate the above steps to ground their shit. Again, I cannot stress the fact that if you're not comfortable doing it, don't even touch it. AC mains voltage is extremely dangerous to your health if you manage to touch the wrong wire and if proper safety guidelines are not followed religiously. I also advise against following the above set of steps - I posted them merely from an educational point of view.
