Anyone here know what the rules generally are on having routers in your university hall room? Can't get in trouble can I?
Anyone here know what the rules generally are on having routers in your university hall room? Can't get in trouble can I?
You could. Read the student manual. It may or may not be allowed. Also do everyone a favor and make sure the DHCP server is disabled.

Anyone find it funny that 1 Ethereum is valued at around the price of an RX580 right now? 1 ETH is about 229€, the cheapest RX580 units on Mindfactory are 221-228€
Anyone find it funny that 230 € is about the same value as a RX580 right now? Like, what's your point? 1 bitcoin is probably valued at the same price as a deagle right now or whatever.
I might be considering switching laptops as my current one is pretty shit. I'm studying network / system management which involves occasionally running VMs, plus me taking a laptop from class to class the whole day. I'm considering the option of buying a used ThinkPad, but I have no idea which model to look out for. My biggest requirement would be a CPU that's up to the task of running 2-3 Windows VMs simultaneously. Something I kind of need is a SATA3 interface so I can transfer my SSD over, and a maximum capacity of 16GB DDR3 would be great as well, considering that I have it in my current laptop. As last a DVD drive bay would be handy so I can use my current HDD in there too. Would you guys have recommendations on what ThinkPad models to look out for? I think my choice would be better to look for a used machine instead of a new one as I don't have a lot of money due to my driver's lessons.
There's an archive of his vlogs which, while entertaining, are not really what I care about. I want his templeos technical videos. Maybe go for something like the Dell Latitude E6520 or E6530 or something with the 4 core/8 thread i7 QM models. You can get those pretty cheap, and the Latitude line has always been similar to Thinkpads. Dell manual says max of 8GB RAM but people online say they've had no trouble using 16GB.
Its probably more realistic to just not run the VMs locally.
Its probably more realistic to just not run the VMs locally.
I mean it's doable on an 8 thread processor with 16GB RAM. Give each of the three VMs 2 threads and 4GB, and you're left with 2 threads and 4GB for the host OS.
Dad acquired two HP 6012B rackmount DC power supplies... I need one... its the only part I'm missing to run my other server... *heavy breathing*

T and X series aren't the only ones.
Anyone here know what the rules generally are on having routers in your university hall room? Can't get in trouble can I?
If your University provides WiFi, don't. Ours would actively triangulate rogue APs (to the floor and couple rooms) and send people cease and desists. :v:
Fixed the fan and the temps are great now, but I still need to fix that ribbon cable if possible. Anyone ever tried fixing those?
Fixed the fan and the temps are great now, but I still need to fix that ribbon cable if possible. Anyone ever tried fixing those?
if it's just a bunch of wire stuck together, maybe some very careful soldering If it's a flat flex cable, just buy another one on ebay, depending on the cable and how it's broken, they can either be impossible or just a huge pain in the ass

If you buy a 580 and mine 1 ETH, you've made all/most of the money back. Ethereum is basically why getting a 480/580 is really hard in some places right now. I just got called by my boss (simple sidejob as resident dj) who needed help with their network (yet again). Turns out the camera system was all fucked up again. FOSCAM is a horrible piece of shit. Their camera web UIs only work on Internet Explorer, on Firefox it constantly keeps nagging about installing a plugin, which you install, and doesn't show up in Firefox), in Chrome it doesn't work at all because of the NPAPI dissapearing, in Internet Explorer you need to enable untrusted ActiveX plugins, which leads to a constant nagging of "insecure settings" on every page you visit. On a Mac using Safari, sometimes you're able to login, sometimes you're not. Sometimes you can login and it shows all camera's on the network, sometimes it does not. Sometimes you can change settings, sometimes it does not. How hard can it be to write a working UI, really?

How can a GPU range price range be so wide? Also, is it useful to mine Etherum on a HD7850? A pay addition would be nice if running my GPU would be profitable. [editline]6th June 2017[/editline] ok, According to some forum posts about the HD7850 and https://www.cryptocompare.com/mining/calculator/ , I could make a profit of 55$ per month. doesn't seem that worth it currently but I'll see..
Why are the RX580 prices from 220€ to 400€? How can a GPU range price range be so wide?
High demand by miners increases prices everywhere, not too many places sell close to MSRP. The high-price units also tend to be the 8GB units - most ASICs go towards the 4GB units since that's what miners buy instantly. Which means there's a very limited amount of 8GB models that can be sold.
Also, is it useful to mine Etherum on a HD7850? I haven't done any math on how much profit you make after paying for electricity, since I don't. (Static electric bill as part of rent, it's not even a separate item on rent since there's no metering, worst the landlord can do is increase prices every year, which they already do.)

So definitely not worth it.
You could. Read the student manual. It may or may not be allowed. Also do everyone a favor and make sure the DHCP server is disabled.
Sorry to sound clueless, but why would this be necessary? Not disagreeing or anything, just wondering why.
How bad is the bottleneck if I run an ssd through USB 3.0? My work wants to buy this dual drive kit to add them to their Mac Mini's for their TV Trucks but I hate dissembling those.

I'm pretty sure it's as fast or faster than a mechanical hard drive over SATA.
You'll be fine on USB 3.0, I think only the highest of the high end SSDs are severely capped by USB 3.0's transfer speeds. Besides, isn't SATA capped at like 6Gbps and USB 3.0 is like 5Gbps? And that's why all the new top-end SSDs use M.2?
You'll be fine on USB 3.0, I think only the highest of the high end SSDs are severely capped by USB 3.0's transfer speeds. You can have SATA m.2 drives that are just as slow as the SATA cable. NVMe over PCIe is really what allows those multigigabyte transfer rates. But anyone correct me if I'm wrong, M.2 and all that is a cluster.

[editline]6th June 2017[/editline] Just make sure you get a USB adapter with a quality controller
