didn't check the screen sizes of the others honestly, and while 13" is much more "lap" fitting it's much too small. I've a solid bag for transportation but I definitely wouldn't want to pull out some 18" at a restaurant or cafe
Eh, the XPS 15 is not at all a bad choice in any case. Hackintosh is actually an option on the XPS 15 as well for that matter. I'd just go for an XPS 15 based on what you're saying.
recommend laptop for university computer science, upper limit of cost probably $2500, minimum screen size 15", should last me 4–5 years but complete futureproofing not necessary thinking some sort of Dell XPS 15 but there's also the new Razer Blade Stealth (overpriced if I had to guess), Lenovo Legion Y520, this thing with 16 hrs left on Massdrop or any other things you may recommend
Get the XPS 15. It's quite popular among developers and compsci students, and you won't regret it. IMO, it's the best laptop I've ever laid my hands on so far.
Everyone will probs disagree but I don't think you can go wrong with a MacBook Pro (with Windows on Bootcamp). I'm still using my 2010 MBP and it does the job quite well tbh.
The new Macbooks have only USB-C ports. Good luck plugging anything into your computer If you're on a budget maybe consider one of the older models. You do have the problem of a degraded battery though.
i occasionally use an ethernet adapter but that's basically all that ever gets plugged into my surface fair point but if other people are throwing out rMBP i prefer the surface book keyboard to my (former) mac see rMBP comment wsl works well for me (apart from not having smartcard support)
Yeah but like the Surface Book is all the bad things about a MacBook Pro (cost, last of native ports, etc) with the addition of all the bad things about having to use Windows :v: I honestly see no reason whatsoever to get the Surface Book over an XPS 15, for example. Maybe the option of using it as a tablet is appealing to some people but ehh
microsoft support is basically apple tier support you laugh, but going into the store is basically "here have a new surface charger"
Yeah I'm going to have to disagree with you here, I deal with them quite regularly. Microsoft store support is definitely below Apple support. Perhaps even Dell's. They're definitely better than like ASUS and the bunch though.

Using a single adapter taking up a single thunderbolt port can give you three USB 3.0 ports, a stereo 3.5mm jack, HDMI, VGA, Mini DisplayPort, Ethernet, full sized and micro-SD ports, and another USB-C port all in a nice compact form factor. That should cover 99.9% of people's needs. The port situation on the new MacBook Pro is way overblown imho.
Support 4K x 2K resolution over HDMI or DisplayPort, and 1920 x 1200 over VGA port. Please note that USB-C port of device requires DisplayPort Alternate Mode
Typically from what I've seen most USB-C ports either support Thunderbolt and all alt-modes, or only USB mode. [editline]26th June 2017[/editline] Hopefully with Intel making Thunderbolt royalty free we'll start seeing more widespread adoption and thus cheaper and more plentiful adapters tho. Thunderbolt really is a quality port.

You’re most likely carrying your laptop in a bag which can carry other things anyway. An all in one adapter isn’t much extra weight Tho it is extra money. It would’ve been nice if it came with at least a 2x usb but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ [editline]26th June 2017[/editline]
microsoft support is basically apple tier support you laugh, but going into the store is basically "here have a new surface charger"
When i shattered my iphone 7+ a few weeks ago and brought it in to repair it they told me there was something wrong with the calibration so they handed me a brand new one 🙂
Did AdBlock Plus change something recently? I'm starting to notice banner ads on various websites and youtube playing ads even though ABP is active and my filters are enabled.
Did AdBlock Plus change something recently? Use uBlock Origin, it hasn't sold out yet.
Google bribed AdBlock Plus into showing Google ads iirc. Use uBlock Origin, it hasn't sold out yet.
Wow, that was a black and white transition. I loaded ublock and refreshed my tabs and blam, even my Photobucket cleaned up. I wonder why Google suddenly turned up the advertising?
I wonder how much google lost from these new rules on content acceptable for monetization.
Would 4x8gb in dual channel mode be faster than 2x16gb? Or not really have much noticeable difference? They're comparably priced, I'm trying to decide between the two for my eventual Ryzen upgrade

If you're going for Ryzen then memory speed has a fairly significant performance impact due to infinity fabric. You won't get overclocked RAM running on 4 slots, only on 2 due to compatability this early in the lifecycle. Intel platforms were the same with XMP on release.
Ah ok, I'll just go for that (with the added bonus of an easier upgrade in the future)
Make sure you stick the RAM in slots 2 and 4 (probably; check the manual) for dual channel mode.
4k touchscreen laptops are a meme right
Yes.
And this is suppose to be bad because...?
Because it's overpriced as fuck.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/THofrS3.jpg[/t] this is for the highest end 1080p no-touch one, good deals for canadian dollar (11% cashback and CC cashbacks not included!!) wish I could remove the included windows 10 home and mcafee trial but I guess the best option after it ships is to format it and put kms unlocked pro or enterprise on it (I use a few of the extra features)
Scorptec have the most over the top packing I've ever seen. RAM came in two layers of 1/2" bubble wrap, then was in a box surrounded with 18 of those bagged air things. Shortly after I found out that two of them can almost support a person's weight.

The only two solutions are to either use ConEmu which doesn't fully cooperate with WSL (especially with arrow key navigation in curses programs) or to do an unsupported hack allowing you to run X gui programs and then using an xterm-based terminal emulator. neither of those options are very aesthetically pleasing either
I'm using this and I'm pretty much enjoying it: https://github.com/mintty/wsltty [editline]27th June 2017[/editline]
Everyone always makes a big deal out of this but if you have a Bluetooth mouse and a $7 USB-C to USB-A converter, you have covered 95% of people's needs. Sure I'd prefer if they were built in, but this is barely a any hassle. With that being said, even tho the MacBook was insanely expensive, I can't imagine using anything else in my spare time. It's also become my dedicated Programming Environment outside of work, due to it's amazing looking text and unix based OS.
Fuck my luck. Another 128gb SSD and its dead too.
Was it used? I'm asking because 120 GB SSDs are barely even available anymore.
Fuck my luck. Another 128gb SSD and its dead too.
Try this?
Yeah they are both used. They are basically "here, have this. *toss*" drives someone keeps throwing at me.
