What is the point of RGBW lighting if you can't control it?
There is an app for that.

I'll stop.
Stop picking on pentium, he is upgrading already, sheesh.

is it open or closed?
Can you script it with your own data

I'm not saying anyone should start using cassette again, but after listening to one with modern music the other day, I'm really surprise how close those old engineers were able to get it to digital.

But Newpunch already has that natively afaik.
Ah didn't know, but I don't manually want to add all my read threads to my watched list on labpunch :lick:
So twitch released their web app, election versions as well for download.
If you've used discord, it's pretty much the exact same, except a different UX, also video chat because it's not that hard to implement, sheesh.
But I don't like it for different reasons that why I don't like Discord. Sure Discord feels like it's selling user data, but it does other things right, like being able to join a guild from your browser as a guest and not have to fuck around, pretty good startup nature to it.
Then the Amazon giants have theirs, which is better developed, but has a lot more marketing within it, while it has a major chat application, it has linked curse profiles to twitch, so curse premium is now a factor that I am unsure what it could change. Which would be a decent comparison to the fuck all you get for paying Discord your dollarydoos.
Amazon's grasp has changed twitch, not a lot in a bad way, it hasn't shaken the platform at all, but you can tell how they're turning a profit out of it, and this effect it could have on their web application is something I'm constantly thinking about.
Skype had ads, no doubt about it. Though they were pretty shit when I actually used it, 99% of the time they were only advertising Microsoft products.
But, I just really don't like having fifty hundred applications for handing communication, especially if most these days are just the same.

Good Comic
Discord isn't the solution to chat discord, now it's just another alternative
A few friends have said that they would actually consider Discord, if it were open source and self-hosted. (From a self-hosted NFP licensed teamspeak server)

Every chat application on the market has issues
I can list many of them, but also have consider what users UX requirements are

The lack of self-hosting and not-closed sourcecode is what's stopping me from liking discord, especially since the presence of those two inevitably will solve my other beef with it (the shitty UI with round avatars and too much flatness)

Yeah but it's also shit and unusable compared to CurrentPunch.
I was leading up to whether he wanted a windows 7 key, if that was the issue. Or if he specifically needed enterprise features.
Nah I don't need Enterprise specifically, it's just a volumetric licensing key I've still got from my old school and the only legit 7 key I've got currently
I still don't 100% understand the Win10 upgrade process and I'd ideally like a key that's just always going to work for it without having any weird issues of being tied to a specific hardware configuration

Speaking of.
Anyone dicked around with those Philips color changing LED bulbs?
I'm not throwing that kind of money around for a stinking lightbulb, but a buddy has a set and it's kind of neat to tinker with. He's got the lighting in his room calibrated similar to how flux works. He likes that far more than using flux on his system.
One of my friends has every light in his apartment running the Hue bulbs. He's got an Alexa and he controls all his lights with voice commands. It's completely unnecessary but it's also pretty fuckin cool to be able to say "Alexa turn the bedroom lights on" and have it actually work.
Just a note on Windows Enterprise - if you're looking for a stripped down version of Windows without all the Metro/Tracking BS, Win10 Enterprise LTSB is amazing.
Just a note on having a quiet computer. Having less fans =/= a quiet computer.
I had 2 fans - 80mm on Hyper TX3 and 80mm for air out.
Upraged to - 80mm front in-> TX3 -> 120mm rear out.
120mm fan failed, too lazy to oil the bearings.
now it is - 80mm front -> TX3 => worse than my first setup and no need to repair that as I could just repair or replace the 120mm fan.
Right now I am rendering for at least 16h in a row: got a job to render some clips together and it is like 15min per clip (camera limit ors. like that) and each video is like an hour. A lot of rendering for my i5.
I am feeling the heat and feeling a bit sorry for my PC. At least the temps are pretty much at norm, hovering around 80C (4.3GHZ 3570k, 1.266V, couldn't drop lower, started to lose stability.)
Started today knowing very little about powershell script with a final project on it due at the end of the night
Just finishing my script to remotely grab event-logs and write them to a file, procrastination makes perfect
So I ripped some DVDs of mine, is it worth reencoding them to MPEG-4 to reduce file size? I'd like to be able to fit them onto an USB stick I own without taking up too much space.

He's savvier than most middle aged people but he definitely still acts like one when it comes to new tech in a lot of ways. LowSpecGamer did a similar video except he tried running Triple A games on it with varying levels of success.

The way I look at it is I'd rather buy cheap one color bulbs and have smart switches over having smart bulbs.
Even then, can't really come up with that great of a justification for it.

1: he claims its ARM when every piece of media related to it mentions x86.
2: he calls it a "GPD Game Pad Digital" and never once mentions "GPD WIN."
3: he tries typing like a normal keyboard and gives no indication he tried thumb typing.
4: Windows 10 hate when Windows 7 doesn't have drivers for the chipset/accessories and cannot effectively take advantage of the touchscreen that's kinda critical to the device.
5: complains about having to plug in an external mouse to configure the game pad functions in emulators which would be fair if he had at least mentioned that the touchscreen wouldn't work for that, but he doesn't seem to mention it.
6: he says the Type C port is for charging only when promotional material clearly mentions data and accessories.
7: what was the point of setting it up as a desktop PC for that test? It was clear 8BG had probably never set up a Windows laptop in a desktop mode before as the process has been more or less the same since XP, so why even bother testing it? It had HDMI and USB so it's possible to use as a desktop, case closed.
8: HE. TURNED. OFF. THE. FAN. Reports are saying if you don't leave the fan on you'll have serious throttling/damage issues.
I love 8-Bit Guy but why did GPD send him this when he hasn't expressed a single bit of interest in modern gaming devices? The whole review felt awkward and uncomfortable, like he didn't know what he was talking about, which I suppose he didn't.
To be fair most devices are idiot proofed against melting your own device by turning off the fan with a switch
You'd assume that if you could turn it off with a switch it would be safe. But this device is also meant for those who are tech-savy so eh.
I still want one
Well that was a waste of an hour. And reading this will be a waste of five minutes, unless you're really into hardware trivia.
After watching some Youtube vid of a guy showing off how he modded almost all his old consoles with an SCART RGB output, all going to a single switcher that multiplexed it to two displays and a recording PC, I was thinking about how one might build a custom entertainment center with as many connections as possible integrated into the actual unit, to make it as neat and tidy as possible.
So I just researched every home console from Nintendo, Sony, Sega and Microsoft, nailing down what video outputs they have, and what power connector and specs they need.
Video is fairly straightforward - modern stuff has HDMI, and with effort everything can get S-Video or SCART (modding would only be required on the NES). If I were actually doing this (I've concluded it's way too much work, and also I can't afford hardware collecting), I'd probably do S-Video since SCART would require importing a lot of PAL versions of the consoles and finding a somewhat rarer display.
But that would leave all the power bricks, which are the real mess. Would it be possible to build a PSU into the entertainment center, and then run a DC rail or two to power everything? Did many consoles end up using the same voltage by any chance? Could it even be one of the voltages from a standard PC power supply, to make things incredibly simple?
Haha, no. You could get pretty far with C8 connectors for the ones with built-in power supplies, but some use polarized and some don't, and a few insist on being special. The DC ones are all over the place - 5V, 9V, 10V, 12V, 15V, and the N64 even needed two different voltages if I were to power it from a rail instead of using the AC adapter. 12V is most common but isn't even half of it. So that part of the plan was crap. Better to just run an AC power socket to each nook, and build the woodwork so it isn't visible from the front. You'd still have needed unique power connectors for everything, and it's not like you can buy just the connector when it's some proprietary nonsense like this. Maybe 3D printing will get to the point one day where it can be used for making connectors, but nothing the home user can get will work yet.
I did determine you could neatly fill a 12-port Ethernet switch if you wanted to connect everything you could to a hardwired network. Eleven devices, and one port for the upstream. I'm not sure what the point of hooking the Gamecube or Dreamcast up would be, since the online is long since shut down and not many games support LAN, but this project idea is the epitome of "why not?". (I actually have the ethernet adapter for my Gamecube, I've never used it and didn't even bother hooking it up to my router when I redid my network)
In conclusion: fuck all of it. If you want a console collection with perfect, flawless cable management, and good-as-possible video quality, just build a good PC and emulate.
