Well then what is the proper term? Corrugated foam?
What's the difference between the ASUS Maximus and Strix motherboard lines? They seem to have parallel line ups each ranging form 130 USD all the way to 300 USD. What am I missing by buying one over the other?
I'm more specifically focused on the offers on this amazon page.

Installing esxi on my Precision finally, got 7 servers planned all with appropriate futurama themed names

For a B250 board? Not much. You're really not gaining a whole lot on that chipset once you clear the "not chinashit" level
Oh I didn't mean the B250 itself just what is available from the choice options like the Maximus IX hero and stuff like that. I'm thinking of maybe choosing the Strix Z270F as I don't want all the features offered on the Z270E but I still have two or three more weeks to think about it.
I have some CIPWTTKT content!

I hate when people use PC terminology incorrectly or just in the most awkward way possible. Like they're trying really really hard to sound like they're computer savvy and it's just backfiring.
Have you guys heard of the MUSE HD laser disc?

Especially if they then argue with you.
Like why the fuck are you asking for my help if you know better?

Having parents that act like they're Bill Gates, Part 2. But the second one virus gets on whatever PC they felt like cursing with their presence, they get all panicky and treat me like I'm their only hope. It doesn't help when they pester me with "Is it fixed yet? Is it fixed yet?!"
Also, if I hear anyone say "I'm pretty good with the computer! :]" or anything like that. They aren't. These are the same people that say stuff like "Don't do that, you'll mess the computer up!" as if the PC is a flimsy building.

Have you heard about Microsoft?
I hope y'all gaming bros like expensive motherboards because it looks like the new 7740K will be on the LGA2066: https://videocardz.com/67610/intel-core-i7-7740k-and-asrock-x299-professional-gaming-i7-spotted
Like, why? Is the LGA2066 replacing only LGA2011 or is it gonna pull double duty also replacing LGA1051?
I must admit that I've been out of the loop as well, because I didn't even notice that Intel managed to shove LGA1050 in there somewhere. Why does Intel need so many different sockets?
Why does Intel need so many different sockets?
I honestly have no idea. Are the old sockets really that outdated that they need to keep updating them or are they just forcing motherboard obsolescence because they're dicks?

Seems like once a month now I get asked if I am manipulating the Internet to be in my favor since Spectrum's rollout has been causing packet loss during certain times of the week. Still a much better situation than being blamed for a computer virus because I used a computer two and a half years prior.
fuck spectrum
i lost internet during an interview and i freaked the hell out

Afaik they are splitting LGA2066 in to Server and Workstation/High-End-Consumer sockets. So i don't think its replacing anything but that.
I guess the chipset and socket will not have support for iGPU and both the LGA1051 and LGA2011 high-end consumer CPUs will move over there, and the rest will stay on LGA1051 for now.
Will be really good for their competition with AMDs CPU line, to not spend half the die size on a iGPU, and be able to provide 6+ core CPUs without cutting the prices for Xeon stuff.

Because guaranteed socket compatibility. It's often an engineering nightmare to adapt newer technology to older sockets, and it's also a nightmare for the consumer to research which motherboard can support which processor family of the same sockets. Back in the days of LGA 775, most motherboards supported around 2 generations of processors anyways.
Also I believe LGA 2066 is replacing LGA 115x. There has been leaked photos of LGA 3647 processors and board for new Skylake EP, which is most likely going to replace LGA 2011
Why does Intel need so many different sockets?
Makes compatibility testing easier. They make chipsets that only have to work with one microarchitecture and its subsequent die shrink. Then each chipset is locked to a specific socket, so you don't have to worry about Z68 compatibility on Skylake, it just doesn't even fit.
Intel really only maintains two sockets at a time - the desktop one, which has ~1150 pins, and the HEDT/server one, which has ~2000 pins.
I'm not actually sure if Intel does it to force consumers to buy new motherboards more often. AFAIK they don't make much profit margin off the chipsets, so they don't have a strong incentive for it. I think they're just being lazy, forcing obsolescence so they don't have to do as much testing.

Spectrum/TWC has been the most incompetent, least helpful service I've had the misfortune of dealing with, on par with a now-bankrupt health insurance company.

I think it's more that 2011 itself is becoming obsolete, at least with Intel's current plan. What we're going to see is a stronger focus on memory and PCIe with 2066. I think it's likely we're going to get more lanes with far more favourable lane partitioning. Remember, we have Optane being a thing. That means stronger PCIe 4x and 8x partitions direct to CPU for sake of latency, plus likely some pins specifically for it. Intel's hedging their bets 100% on Optane right now, they've basically killed their entire flash lineup for it. It is the future for them. It definitely is a factor driving this socket.

Yes and a friend of mine has a Japanese Pioneer MUSE unit. He's spent the last five years trying to track down the remote control because the front panel only gives you the basic functions and being both Pioneer and Japanese the remote is almost impossible to find.

Actually just about all the 90's analog HD equipment I can think of is either really uncommon or horribly expensive.
IMHO it's so late in the game and the discs so hard and expensive to get that I'd prefer tracking down your choice of movies on DVD. I'd say go DVHS buuuut they made it so goddamn hard to record HD video from other sources.
Got a text last night with a Google verification code so I went and changed all my Google passwords, and now this:

I woke up to an inbox of like 30 Twitter login attempt notifications once. That was a fun morning.
I had an incident a few months back where someone used an exploit in skype to basically spam messages everywhere. Eventually I got fed up with it and changed my password.
The next day I'm at my PC and Skype logs out everywhere and barely a minute later Microsoft texts my cell indicating they've locked the account down due to repeated unsuccessful attempts. Had to reset the password twice before they would let me log back in.
RIP B33FqU33F. You were one hell of a password.

Hah, that sucks.
I am honestly astonished my Google account hasn't been accessed before. I haven't changed the password since I registered it in like 2005 and I know for a fact it's been in a breach before. Figured 2FA would be good enough, guess I got lucky it was.

LastPass owns. It is both convenient and secure. No idea why it took me so long to get on that bandwagon.

I'll stick to my sheet of lined paper. I don't trust technology to handle my passwords, even if it's some old electronic pre-internet device.
Oh Jesus, I don't mean to spam the thread, but I just got an email saying a client has a bug around something I fixed a long time ago...
Their complaint is that when exporting documents with a document category filter, only documents with the selected document categories get exported.

If you want to write down your passwords, then sure go for it. Keep in mind you'll have to deal with a high probable risk of it being physically destroyed or lost by some means.
The main reason why I suggested Lastpass is you can use it to generate random passwords for every site. So if one gets hacked, your other accounts won't be compromised.
Lastpass also has the convenience of filling out passwords forms for you, so you don't have to deal with browser autocomplete related vulnerabilities.
