I thought I was lucky being able to reach a position as first line support analyst for a UK company. 8 months down the line I find it really draining and mentally exhausting. It doesn't help that this is also kind of getting in the way of reaching my goal as a software developer, because I always get home tired and unable to study. Bit of a catch-22. I hope I'll be able to break the monotony.
You know what's satisfying? Receiving over 60 spam emails in 24 hours (For 2 days I might add), checking the headers, noting the source IP and forwarding them all to the carrier it was sent from. Then all of a sudden never receiving another one from then again.

I sat and talked for like 5 minutes before they wanted to hire me. Now I work on TV vans, macs and cablecast boxes which I know nothing about :v:
Wait. Did they actually pay list price for THAT MUCH RED gear? Holy shit. The reason the markup is so high is not to get you to actually pay that, It's to drive you to contact them to haggle over it. YOU DON'T PAY LIST PRICE. YOU CONTACT THEM AND ORGANISE THE PRICE. THIS IS ENTERPRISE EQUIPMENT 101.
TBH the price is that high because RED knows studios and rental companies will buy it in bulk and want discounting. It's also to prevent vidiots (video idiots) with too much in their wallet to buy it and not have any idea how to use it. Rent before you buy kids.. Although for LTT, they mainly make videos so it makes more sense to buy it than rent it. For the smaller YouTubers and cinematographers, they buy the camera bodies so they can use it whenever they want without going through rental companies and know that they are legit using it frequently and it's not collecting dust. Remember that rental companies could have 10s of these RED cameras in stock. But anyways, RED makes bank regardless.

I guarantee you could knock $30-50k off the price they paid for all that just through standard negotiation. Be it $220k worth of camera gear of $220k worth of large-server. It's the same style of enterprise ordering. You just don't pay list price.
There will be valid reasons for not replacing all existing OS/2 or eComStation installations with ArcaOS. ArcaOS does not provide extensive support for ISA or MicroChannel hardware, for example.
I was not aware there was a market more niche than I was. :v:
Nice, chrome is now hijacking the programmable media keys I have on my G930 when it's the active window meaning I can't control fb2k while using it :poot:

Like come on LTT video editors..
He spent too much on camera gear, can't afford to pay proper editors
They should get me to quality control their videos. I mean that's what I do at work anyways but for TV shows and other shit.
some cool guy met me at a local pizza place and gave me a PC speaker so I could diagnose my boot issue

So I think I'm going to be in the market for a new small laptop, the x201t lacks native usb 3 ports and a not shit sd card reader. I do like the 12 inch form factor, just want one with updated internals and such. Must have: At least 3 USB 3 ports An SD card reader that isn't shit (not a USB 2 speed one) Lightweight Totally optional but would be neat: Docking station

Obviously being a Thinkpad there are a variety of dock options. Dunno what the SD reader speeds are like, though. Would wager it's faster than the much older x201t, but I can do a test on my X220 if ya would like. The X230 uses a newer revision of the same SD reader controller in the X220 IIRC.
It should be better. The one on the X220/X230 is PCI-e connected as opposed to USB 2 on the X201t. That's a start at least. Performs okay in my experience. I haven't ever hit it too hard though.
the problem with entry-level IT jobs is they're consistently managed by people who don't know shit about IT
I obtained an entry level IT job, only three employees at my company aren't developers :ok: In other news, one of the other guys is working on an internal report to list how much support time each client is consuming, one used 190+ last month but was only paying for 30. All I can see is dollar signs.

I'm not expecting UHS speed results (since that wasn't a think back in 2012) but if I can at least offload to another hard drive at roughly 90-100MB/s (which is the max read speed of my SD cards anyways) then it's good enough. Also it having 2 USB 3 and 1 USB 2 is good enough. The USB 2 port would likely be used for my Logitech mouse dongle anyways. Something I've noticed with my x201t is that the left side palm rest gets a lot toastier when I have an expresscard to USB 3 adapter in it.. even if I'm not using it at all. Either way, point is to have native USB 3 ports because I tried using that same adapter and powering 2 portable 2.5 inch hard drives. It didn't really work out very well so I had to switch to a USB 2 port which wasn't super helpful. However, offloading from a USB 3 card reader to a USB 3 portable hard drive, both connected to the same Expresscard worked fine. Also I'd assume the X230 has the newer ExpressCard 2.0. The Expresscard to USB is 2.0 but the Expresscard slot on my x201t is like.. 1.1a or something like that so it won't go amazingly fast (not that it's "really" needed right now). The X240+ has a SC slot I will literally never use.

Oh my god. Why are they using a hard drive in PIO mode??
