• Significant Performance Drop on Windows 7

I switched from Vista about a week ago and I've been using 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate and I've noticed some significant performance drops from what I had on Vista. Crysis went from 40-60 FPS to 25-45, Left 4 Dead 2 went from 120+ to ~60. I'm using the latest drivers and shit for my GPU and everything should be updated. Anyone know why I'd get a drop in performance like this? Specs: i7 920 @ 3.7 GHz 6 GB of DD3 RAM GTX 295 Asus P6T Deluxe V2
I've had a similar problem with Windows 7. I had a specific issue with it though, so this might not apply to you. If you're running two monitors + ultramon (or other multi-monitor taskbar thingy), and you have Aero Glass enabled, that might be the cause. That's a problem I had. I disabled Aero and got a significant boost in terms of performance in games.
Aero shouldn't make a difference. If you are running it fullscreen DWM will drop whatever it's doing to not waste resources.

Well. I'm using two monitors right now, but no other software to extend the task bar. And I noticed the performance issues even before I set up the second monitor.
Aero is on when I play games...
Do you have vsync enabled in left 4 dead 2? Sounds like that. I've not seen any decrease since vista, only increases. The crysis fps always differs unless it's from the average benchmark you're taking it. (Some places are a lot more GPU heavy than others).
Did you do a clean install of 7?

And yes, it was a clean install.
Nvidia drivers [editline]09:52PM[/editline] check your power options the defualt is balanced which will sometimes downclock the gpu
Nvidia drivers [editline]09:52PM[/editline] check your power options the defualt is balanced which will sometimes downclock the gpu
The clocks are displayed on my G15 screen and the clocks are always at the default.
Aero doesn't disable for fullscreen games in Windows 7.
I guess they took that out. Oh well. People have looked into it and Aero doesn't cause any noticeable performance drop. I too have tested this. FPS remained the same on a laptop, a desktop from 2003 with horrible specs, and my main machine.
Aero is on when I play games...
No it isn't.
Should just get the newest driver direct from the manufacturers website if you haven't done that already.
Are you running the game in windowed mode
Full screen. 2 Monitors.
Are you running the game in windowed mode
Nope.
Yeah. L4D2 is unplayable with anti-aliasing on. Like 20-40 FPS when I used to get 100+. What the fuck, Windows 7.
:downs:
Are you completely retarded or what? Just... sigh.
I see what they did there. I've heard Aero affects performance too. I'll do a test when I get back home. I usually play Gmod on NoBorder mode, and aero is on, I hope I could bring up my FPS if I go to classic mode XD
Yeah. L4D2 is unplayable with anti-aliasing on. Like 20-40 FPS when I used to get 100+. What the fuck, Windows 7.
What resolution? For me, 1680x1050 and I have everything on, i have a max of 200fps with my 4870.
Are you completely retarded or what? Just... sigh.
Was that a question aimed at yourself?
