(supah compoopah) only 26 quid out of budget
Well, I said ~£800, not £800. Thanks again, bookmarked and all that.
My one friend suggested to me an alternative; and I ended up ordering a MSI R9 390 Gaming 8G card. Will arrive on the same day with Fallout 4.
I'm getting a quad-channel board. Should I buy 4x4GB sticks of memory or 2x8GB so I can install two more later? The whole dual-channel / quad-channel thing has me confused. Will my memory not run as fast if I'm not using all four slots? If I have two, do I keep it in the same colored slots?
buy two 8s. Then get two more 8s whenever you want. It'll be overkill but buying 2 4's for a 4 slot board is silly, especially if it maxes at 32 gigs.

Is it possible that my motherboard or CPU died after my PC froze in a Prime95 test with a i5 4670k running at 4,2GHz? I'm stuck in a boot loop before/ while POSTing, which is a Gigabyte thing apparantly. My only problem with this is that none of the solutions I found worked for me.
What solutions have you tried?
Removing the battery, clearing the CMOS by shorting the two pins, holding the power button, pressing Alt + F12 for backup BIOS (?) edit: After just letting the bootloop go it seems to go a step further everytime. I got booted into the OS lol.
What benefit is there in getting more RAM, i've always kind of been skeptical with how much extra usability / performance having another 8GB would give me in gaming? I don't do any strenuous stuff like editing / modelling so I didn't think it would help? Currently I have this RAM: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb-(2x4gb)-corsair-ddr3-vengeance-jet-black-lp-pc3-12800-(1600)-non-ecc-cas-9-9-9-24-xmp-15v What would I do? Buy another set of this or buy a new 16GB set? Also any generally accepted choices for Nvidia GPU cards at the moment? My mobo is this: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4140#ov
Following on from my own post. I went a got my GPU and RAM upgrade. Gpu install went perfectly. However, I bought the exact same RAM, down to the same product code. And my PC won't boot when I put the 2 sticks in. I'm thinking theres a setting in my BIOS or something as I've tested every combination and my original 2 sticks work, and the new 2 dont. What should i be looking at? It is possible i got 2 DOA RAM sticks?
What quad channel board are you getting that only has 4 slots?
Oh sorry, I meant dual-channel. The Amazon listing for the GA-Z170XP says it's quad-channel but the Gigabyte website says it's dual-channel
Oh sorry, I meant dual-channel. The Amazon listing for the GA-Z170XP says it's quad-channel but the Gigabyte website says it's dual-channel
Ah yeah, dual 8gb sticks for sure then.
lmao I better double check all of my selected products to make sure Amazon didn't confuse me on anything else
Well, after rebooting I'm stuck in the same loop again. I'll try removing the battery and clearing the CMOS tomorrow and will flash a new BIOS as soon as I'm in Windows.
How's this build look?
How's this build look?
- You could save some money by buying from multiple websites instead of just Amazon. - Any reason for two optical drives? - If you are overclocking, you will want an aftermarket cooler for that 4690K - An i5-4690K is amazingly more than you would ever need with a 750ti. You can save some serious cash by dropping your CPU down a bit, or you will want to change your GPU/upgrade in the future. A GTX 960 or R9 390/GTX 970 will fit the CPU far better. - Any reason for that specific motherboard?
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/fRq2dC Revised my build a bit, any thoughts?

I'm getting two opticals because sometimes I'll get a CD that can't be read by a given drive, but often will by a different one. Don't plan on OC'ing. I will be using this build mostly as a DAW and file backup rig, really only has a gfx card in case I wanted to play some HL2 or something. Really not a gaming rig at all. The mobo looked like a nice one to me, got good reviews. Just seemed like a solid stable mobo. Sorry, I should have mentioned this stuff in my last post.
Are there generally good black friday/cyber monday sales for computer parts? i need to decide when to pay for this stuff
When updating a game on steam, I noticed my download was having to stop and wait on my hard drive, so I bought a 1TB crucial SSD. My boot drive is still a 120GB SSD, but with my programs HD being a SSD now, everything is stupid fast. Is anyone here running a new skylake setup? I'm thinking about upgrading to one.
I'm about to upgrade to a Skylake build myself
I have a skylake build but waiting on replacement PSU to see how it goes, just a giant paperweight atm.
If your on Haswell therees really no point in going to Skylake
I'm upping to Skylake because my old phenom build is slow as shit. It seems like it's time for a complete system overhaul and I want it slightly future-proof.
So after 4 years i think its time to upgrade :v: Could some anyone help me out? My budget is $1000. I'd like to spend less of course. I'd like to play Fallout 4, GTA5 this is my current build is, it was my first venture into PC building, so I'm still a novice. Anything i can salvage from this? I obviously need to upgrade my GPU. Do i need a new mobo? I have 2 4g ram cards, with 2 open slots. I guess i could overclock my current cpu instead of upgrading?. My PSU is a Antec NEO ECO 620. Is this good enough for the new parts? It has a bunch of cables that i dont use, so it creates a space problem and almost gets into the fans. My current case is a Antec 200S, bit small so i need a new one of those. I also need a new monitor, my current one is an 20" envision g2016wa1 its pretty old. Id like some HD, i dunno. i have limited space so dual setup is a no go.

Sorry, I should have mentioned this stuff in my last post.
If you do alot of digital montage you might want to upgrade to an octo core CPU. Most audio montage tools can use 8+ core's at the same time. While games prefer single core performance. If you want to save a bit the AMD FX-8350 Black Edition (4Ghz octo core) is a good option. Its a really popular choice concerning workstations like this. And only costs 175€ However its single core performance is less, so applications that prefer single core speed. (Like most games) will run a bit worse. Still fine though. Alternatively you can stay on Intel, if you just want a CPU that is good for games, not too expensive and ok for average DAW I would reccomend the: Intel Core i5-4460 175€ (3.2 Ghz Quad core) Just a simple good CPU. However, only 4 core's so heavy DAW projects might struggle. A step up is the: Intel Xeon E3-1231-V3 260€ (3.4 Ghz Quad core with hyper threading (8 threads) This one features hyper threading, which kind of splits the 4 3.2 Ghz cores into 8 cores. Not really as good as the true octo cores, but still better than just a quad core. The true Intel Octo cores start around 650€ with the Intel Xeon E5-2630 v3 (2.4-3.2 Ghz octo core). But are also a tad faster compared to the AMD Octo core's. See here: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=AMD+FX-8350+Eight-Core Note, this is a syntetic benchmark and not really all that representative. (Especially not for games) In short, I reccomend the AMD FX-8350 Black Edition for your budget and work load.

Whats the difference? Ones alot more expensive, but better I assume. Does it matter what manufacturer it is? So this is what I came up with. [t]http://i.imgur.com/rzzoeOX.png[/t] Turns out i have to get a new mobo because my old one doesnt have USB 3.0 headers. Not a huge deal but it'd be nice. I put the rest of my parts in and it said no incompatibility I plan on getting the mobo and new RAM on newegg and the rest on amazon.
Decided to swap the HDD/SSD hybrid with an 250g SSD cuz i dont think i need 4 more TB. [t]http://i.imgur.com/RE8HmId.png[/t]
You're not really going to see any difference whatsoever by getting new RAM. And you can always get a PCIe card with a USB3.0 header.
I wouldn't bother with the new motherboard and just upgrade to a 980Ti instead. Markedly better than the 980.
