Planning on building a new computer with a budget of $2000. I'll have no parts to salvage so I'm starting from scratch. The challenge is I need to fit it into a HTPC case because I'll have a pretty strict space requirement for it.

So my 5 year old rig isn't cutting it anymore and between here and PCMR I think I may have this figured out. No RAM or HD since I recently upgraded to 64-bit OS so my RAM and HD are new. Can't wait to get rid of my old case, that while pretty is super impractical. Any suggestions/ things I'm missing? Also, i'm probably going to wait for black Friday/cyber Monday for moneys sake.
Monitor/keyboard/mouse? What are your uses?
Monitor is currently going to be a Samsung TV I have on standby, will be replacing it later for something more slim. I can have an old keyboard shipped from home, I'm not too picky nor do I have great need for something like a mechanical keyboard. I'm currently using a corsair (cannot remember the model as it's been 3+ year since I got it) mouse which I'm comfortable with to continue using. Main usage will be as a gaming PC that should be able to last 4 years. Goals are to be able to run things such as Star Citizen, GTA V, Witcher 3, and Fallout 4 on maximum settings.
if this going vertical or horizontal? also what type of strict space requirement
Horizontal, space requirement is to have it around the same size as an Xbox one for quick reference.

Hmm. May be too big. That's what I get for not refreshing.

I've decided to go ahead and start building a PC soon with a budget around $1000 or slightly lower. I also wanted to re-use a m itx case I picked up a while ago, but if there's something more favorable I'll ditch it over something else. Any thoughts guys?
When updating a game on steam, I noticed my download was having to stop and wait on my hard drive, so I bought a 1TB crucial SSD. My boot drive is still a 120GB SSD, but with my programs HD being a SSD now, everything is stupid fast. Is anyone here running a new skylake setup? I'm thinking about upgrading to one.
I'm running a skylake build, I can throw up the list of parts I used if you want. Overall I have no qualms with it, I was using an old AMD build before, so it's a really nice upgrade.
I was looking into "quiet edition", normal, and "high performance" fans for my SPEC-02 case... Can I just order the high performance fans and get some sort of voltage adjuster? Would that cause any problems?
Just get the quiet ones. If they're the corsair fans I'm thinking of, the performance ones are loud as fuck. [editline]6th November 2015[/editline] Source: My ears for the last year
I assume the high performance ones didn't have the rubber gromits that I noticed in my quiet edition fans that bolted everywhere on my Case, it pretty quiet but then again i'm hearing impaired so quiet, loud, meh.
-snippy snip snop-
They do. They're just considerably louder. I've had both.
The package of my MSI 980 tells me that it requires a minimum 12 V current rating of 42 A (no idea what this is). Where do I check these specifications on the PSU? And how do I know if its compatible with the GPU? my PSU info: http://www.corsair.com/en-us/tx650w on the tech spec tab.
make sure the psu has the proper pci-e power cables that the gpu needs.
the PSU has two 6+2 pins so its fine, and the GPU came with an 8-pin extension, but I'm thinking that I don't need it? I was a bit skeptical about installing a new modular PSU, since I wasn't sure if it was powerful enough (Corsair CS650M).

Can I just order the high performance fans and get some sort of voltage adjuster? Would that cause any problems?
Case fans are designed to run at one specific speed, you might have some coil whine or resonance problems if you mess with their RPM. Some fancy motherboards have fan control on case fans, You could also buy a fan controller or use some resistors to drop the voltage instead. (The resistor thing doesn't always work out very well tho, especially the high RPM fans have a strict voltage operating range, and then even if it works you're stuck at one RPM setting, which might not be what you want)
the PSU has two 6+2 pins so its fine, and the GPU came with an 8-pin extension, but I'm thinking that I don't need it?
not unless you need the extension. sometimes gpus bundle a 6-pin to an 8+2pin pci-e though, which would also be unnecessary.
Running a 950SCC on a 350 watt power supply will be ok right? It will be playing Gta V. I know the minimum is 350 so I need to know if I should get a higher power supply

OK so I keep looking at various guides on case fans and system cooling and I see LOADS of people using "hot air rises" as a configuration explanation. Is convection even NEARLY as fast as the fans actually pushing the air?
Depends on the power supply. 350W doesnt always mean 350W.
It currently has a 750ti running on it and it runs amazing. The power supply is a Allieo SL-8360BTX. It's a prebuilt.

OK cool. People keep saying that but it really didn't make sense to me at all.
Wanting to upgrade to a 4790K from an 8350FX, would this be a good idea for the motherboard? http://www.ebuyer.com/703896-msi-h97-gaming-3-socket-lga-1150-vga-dvi-hdmi-displayport-7-1-channel-h97-gaming-3
I'm pretty sure want a Z series motherboard if you intend to overclock with the unlocked processor.
My friends scrapping his PC and is thinking of giving me his MSI GTX 970 100ME, I believe I have a Gigabyte Windforce GTX 970, so my question is can I SLI them? and if so is it worth it, or will it just cause tons of issues down the line?
Gents, I'm looking for a case that can hold a fairly fuckhuge graphics card (Windforce 970). Anyone got any experience with the NZXT stuff? https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ocuk-tech-labs-pre-noise-dampened-case-nzxt-phantom-usb3.0-big-towercase-white-ca-084-nx.html Looking at this, just because I don't want to chance a midi and get burned.
