What's the consensus on Lian Li's cases? I've heard good things about them.
used their xion-xon (however the fuck you spell it) for a cheap mATX build for a friend managed to cram a 220mm fan into it supported by duct tape, fucking hilarious 10/10 would file down the top of a heatsink again
What's the consensus on Lian Li's cases? I've heard good things about them.
They're pretty fantastic. They haven't done much in the name of innovation lately though. If you're looking at spending as much as their high end cases I'd recommend taking a look at some of Caselab's ITX cases. The Nova x2M and the Mercury S8. You can get them without the windows (and it'll be cheaper) And without the vented fronts if you want. [t]http://cdn1.bigcommerce.com/server4100/df4bb/products/510/images/2317/X2M_FB__17678.1430425886.1280.1280.jpg?c=2[/t] [t]http://cdn.overclock.net/2/28/350x700px-LL-2815e9cd_IMG_0488.jpeg[/t] They're aluminum though, but not shiny ass brushed, as any quality case will be. The manufacture/shipping time is a bit atrocious though so don't be wanting it in a week or two because they make all of them to order.
I like that! Reminds me of the finish NXT used to use on their machines. Super pricey, though; well out of my range.
Figured with you talking about Lian Li they may be in range. Also check out the Fractal Design Core 500 and Node 304.

I'll propose it anyway to my friend, but might have to revert to even lower than my previous offering. More like under 550 tops.
So my parents are against me buying the parts for a PC online because of the potential for postal problems and refund shenanigans, instead wanting me to got to Maplins or somewhere and doing whatever there. Except I came to this thread because I don't know exactly how to get what I want from a computer build so going to a retail and saying "I want a good PC" would be like ordering "food" at a restaurant or "a thing" at Argos. I've got the PCPartPicker list a kind soul here gave me still, but ar my parents chatting bollocks or not?
Very much rubbish. Maplin and the likes are the worst places to buy electronics, the markup is insane. As you're in the UK you have retailers like Scan who are online and ridiculously reliable. Other good ones I have bought from are Quiet PC who sell RAM very cheaply, particularly DDR4, and Overclockers UK,. I also bought a 5960X for £200 less than its current sale price in an ebay auction. It was legit and unopened.
So unfortunately building my own custom case didn't work out. It was a bit too ambitious and I couldn't get the proper materials to do it. So instead I saved up for a few more months so I can still get a compact design I'll post pics once it's done!

It was an offer made to imply consent to buying everything online through their refusal. They agreed.
Win-win situation, best of both worlds.
-snip, should look at things myself first-
How cheap do 1-2tb hard drives go for? Desktop has had a 500gb hard drive in it for a while, along with a laptop with barely any space and a server that could use a RAID backup. Seems like they can get pretty cheap, but if I'm looking at getting 3-4 1tb+ hard drives, would like to know how low I could get that with black friday coming up.
Yep, builds updated. [editline]11th November 2015[/editline] Or you can go with the craptastic build I'm posting from right now. It's been like 2 months and I've yet to put forth the effort to RMA my main motherboard.
Yep, builds updated.
what are the disadvantages of lacking L3? the athlon has none.
Built it for $200 though [editline]11th November 2015[/editline]
what are the disadvantages of lacking L3? the athlon has none.
My fucking merge. But L3 is the slowest type of cache. IMO it's most helpful for iGPU's, but the Athlon doesn't have one.
So should I go for a 970, or just get a 980ti or is that too overkill for 1080p Currently have a 770
Me again. How does this pre-built, cheaper PC compare to The List some kindly soul provided me, and how to show which is better? Like I said, I know what the computer parts do, I just have no idea on judging quality.
Besides bigger gpu support... is there any reason to get a r5 over a r4?
Pretty much all of the difference is in the CPU, which is massively in favour of the Intel
I suppose I am biased as I play CSGO, and keep looking for CPU performance.
So should I go for a 970, or just get a 980ti or is that too overkill for 1080p Currently have a 770
The 970 or the R9 390 are the current sweetspot GPU's for 1080P. They will run all normal games at max for the next year or so. In 2 years you can buy the follow up of the 970/390 for the money you saved now from not buying a 980TI. And it will beat the 980TI. Direct X 12 and VR headsets are comming out soon as well, and we dont know how current GPU's are going to respond to those. Extra reasons to not buy a too expensive GPU if you ask me. More info about that here: https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1450722&p=49089492&viewfull=1#post49089492
I'm just going to buy the stuff online against the orders of my parents. They didn't work for my money so I'm just going to save them £300 and disobey them.
Rebellion is an important part of growing up. It's the first step to becoming your own person.
Currently stuck between buying an XFX or an EVGA PSU. RMA'd my Corsair one for the second time and I'm getting a refund this time. I'm kind of leaning towards the XFX, thoughts? http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-xfx-xxx-hybrid-modular-80plus-bronze-1x135mm-atx-v22-psu http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-evga-supernova-g2-fully-modular-80plus-gold-atx-power-supply-541a-single-plus12v-rail-140mm-dou
I can't fucking believe this shit. After buying the XFX model and installing it, doing cable management for the third time, I've been given ANOTHER faulty PSU. This time really bad coil whine which is like someone constantly blowing a dog whistle. I can turn off the PC and it's just as loud until I cut the power completely. Why the fuck can't I just have a functional PSU? Shit like this is how serial killers are made I swear.
What graphics card is sufficient to max out today's games at 1600x900? By today's games I mean fallout 4.
970? Maybe? Fallout 4 isn't optimized very well, from what I've read.
A 970 would be overkill for your situation but at the same time I'd recommend it for the value of being able to play anything else for the near future at great settings. I have a 970 and an i5 4460 with 8gb of ram and I can get a solid 60fps on fallout 4 with all the settings maxed. There's a problem with the companion app though where it won't properly display the local map when playing on pc at 1080p, so I run the game at 2560x1600 and it manages a solid 40-60, mostly staying near 60, but it does dip sometimes for sure. it's good to have extra headroom for situations like that, and for poorly optimized ports of games you might want to play.
another thing you could do is buy a used 290 off ebay for about $250 and be set for a while
I don't know anything about computers. At the end of the year I want to buy a new PC though. My dream would be three 2k monitors with a PC capable of playing new games on ultra settings... Would that require a ridiculous $10,000 build? I was hoping to spend around $2,000AUD on the PC was looking at getting maybe three dell u2515h's as well. I'd appreciate if someone who knows things about stuff could tell me if I'm being an idiot or not.

I'd appreciate if someone who knows things about stuff could tell me if I'm being an idiot or not.
Well, you should be able to build a pc that can run tripple 4k for 4000AUD. (without the screens) The problem is that you need a very heavy GPU's to run games on ultra at 4K. And in your case you want to do it on 3 4k screens at once. 3x 980TI would be your best option. And those are almost 1000$ a piece. You also have to ask yourself if you really want that, because in my experience, 99% of the time you will spend staring at the single screen in front of you and the screens on the side add little to nothing. You would be better off with an ultra wide curved screen. On top of that, I would argue that tripple screen setups are going to be redundant Q1 2016 due to the release of the Oculus rift and Vive Virtual Reality headsets. A pc that can run one of those at ultra would only require one 980Ti. However, game development with VR support is still starting up and games like Fallout 4 etc dont support VR without third party modding yet.
Hmmm. Yeah thats heaps more money than I want to spend. Is there a huge difference in the type of hardware you need for 2k vs 4k? because I was looking moreso at 2K monitors. Ultimately I just want heaps of screen real estate because I need to have a bunch of things open for work, but I also want something that's going to run GTA5 on really high settings. I'd be looking at PC & screens and am hoping for around $3,000AUD. I guess the resolution really kills the possibility for high performance without paying buttloads? [editline]13th November 2015[/editline] Would one 2K monitor (primary) and two 1080p monitors be a better way to go? [editline]13th November 2015[/editline] (I dont even know what I really want. I was just hoping for three monitors and a swish PC for around $3kAUD)
