I've been told to pick up a WD Blue instead of a WD Black because "Blacks can get obnoxiously loud, and they're overpriced considering they perform equally to Blue's." Can anyone provide insight on that? I don't have experience with Blacks so I can't say myself. Also, is it worth dropping money on a 980ti or should I go safe for the R9 390? I've been told that the price/performance ratio is terrible for the 980ti and even the 980.
Meh, the noise level of blacks mostly depends on your case more than anything, I have two of them running in my case and it's still hardly noticable over background noise. The longer warranty is nice. Also, the 980Ti does have pretty mediocre price to performance, but it's also the best you can get. A 390 wouldn't let you down unless you're gaming in 1440p or 4K with higher settings, though. Planning to run Ultra on current year games at acceptable framerates. Tired of playing medium-high to be honest.
what was your budget again
Around $150-200 in total, if it's some great extreme deal I could add $30-50 extra of my own, but yeah. (That Athlon II x4 is like 80€ on Amazon, so gotta substract around $90-95)
Looking to replace my Radeon R9 280 because a fan on it blew out completely. I know what I want, GTX 970, but I'm wondering if I should buy the version directly from NVIDIA themselves (there's a reason its a best buy link) or EVGA's version. Which is better? Pros, cons, etc.?
We're doing Best Buy because my significant other's employee discount takes off $130 bringing it down to $250. They have both the EVGA and Nvidia one. But aside from that, say I have poor case fan airflow, is the Nividia one still preferable?
He does, not me, and yeah. He got an unclaimed Fallout 4 Pip-Boy pre-order for $40 when its retail price was originally $200. I have front air intake, but it's not the best. I only have the case fans that came with the case. (Rosewill Blackbone) Might get the EVGA one either way, I've had problems keeping my R9 280 cool despite being the three-fanned Windforce variant from Gigabyte. One fan might not be enough with the barely-passable airflow. Then again it could've just been the card itself being a shit, I've heard nothing but heat issues with AMD users these last few months...
I'll take your 280 and RMA it and have a $200 GPU for free
Funny but my SO is insistent on just buying me a new one because I'd "sit without a GPU at all until it comes back" and won't stand for that. I can't convince him otherwise. If he wants to blow money on me like that, who am I to stop him?
oh yeah any 3 pin should work but the fact that he received a power cable not suited for american outlets is the psu itself made for american voltage?
That PSU is auto switching so it should be fine.
Thinking of buying GTX970, which manufacturer would be better?

Also, the case is non-negotiable. I like that case, and I'm really weird about aesthetics. This isn't a total budget build, by the way. I'm sort of trying to part out a good new computer, something that'll last at least as long as this one, but be more reliable. And smaller. Significantly smaller. The 970's just a holdover until the next generation of VR-ready graphics cards.
Alrighty, so I'm completely new to building PC's but recently I've finally managed to save up enough money to pay back all of the debts I owed, and so now I can actually start saving towards a computer. I'm not sure if I'm meant to make a new thread about this or not, so I'm just gonna post here and see what happens. So like I said, I've never done this before but I know that it's generally a better and cheaper decision to build a computer than to order a prebuilt one. With that said, I'm trying to run on a budget of anywhere from $1000-$2000, give or take a hundred or so. I've already got a desk picked out, this bad boy, whose price I'm going to look into later. Presently that stands at about $200, so my max budget is probably about $1900 for a computer. I was originally going to ask this question with that $1600 build in the OP in mind, but I'm not sure if I even need that much power for my purposes. I'm trying to run pretty much any game at high settings with good performance (Skyrim, GTA, Fallout, Battlefront, etc.) I'm not particularly concerned about running at 1440p or whatever, mainly because I'm trying to cut back on costs. I don't even know everything I'd need to buy. So far I've picked out a desk, and I know I need a keyboard, monitor, and mouse (which we can look into later). My concern right now is the rig itself. So there's the CPU, motherboard, and stuff mentioned in the OP. But like, what about OS? I'm looking for either Windows 7 or 10, and I need an optical drive to install it? What's this I've heard about thermal paste? Any other components? So if somebody could give me a hand here, and perhaps even like a full, comprehensive list of every primary component I'd need, I'd really appreciate it. I don't have any particular timeframe for building this (because I still need to save up another $1000 for that $1900 budget), but if I can get any good Black Friday deals going on like a monitor, that'd be pretty cool. I'd really appreciate any help you guys can give me.
Thinking of buying GTX970, which manufacturer would be better?
Can never go wrong with EVGA imo. They have the best customer service imo as well if something goes wrong.

If you're interested in overclocking then you'll have to spend extra. Also there are a lot of PC building guides that can be found online. Newegg and Techrep have video guides which can be handy. If you don't want to build it yourself then you could go to a PC store and see if they can do it for you. Be wary though that they may try to sell you different parts from the ones you originally want.
Could someone throw some (or just one) builds at me that could do really high-end gaming (gta V, ARK, Fallout , etc) on high/ultra? I'm looking for something around 1000 USD (can be over a little) I already have two parts (which I've gotten from a friend who had them spare) -Corsair Graphite Series 230T Mid tower -Seagate Barracuda 1 TB Internal HDD (If possible, include a monitor/keyboard/mouse too, if you do it can be over 1000 USD)

How old is the hard drive and what's the condition of it? If it's nearing 5 years old or failing then I strongly urge to buy a new one. Did you spend cash for it? If you did and it's used, then the cash would've been better gone towards a new HDD.

Upgrading from a 6870. I think I'm sold on the 970. NewEgg has a good deal going on them and I've been eyeing them for a while. Is there anything I should know before I pull the trigger on this? Its been close to 5 years since I had to upgrade/build my rig. This summer I might replace the CPU and mobo and next fall/winter complete it by replacing the RAM, PSU, and adding an SSD

Which is nice to have that kind of headroom, I feel pretty safe in not having to upgrade from a 970 at least as long as the current consoles are around.
Looking for a small SSD to install my OS onto. Which small one is good? I've never had an SSD before.
