In my experience, there isn't much difference from the Gigabtye vs MSI 970s other than the outputs. Both one brother and I have MSI cards which run quietly. I rarely see it go above 70C and still don't hear the fans. My other brother has the Gigabtye card and if I remember correctly it's pretty much the same. Our MSI cards each OC to 1570-1600 MHz and Giga card goes to I think ~1550 or so. My memory maxes at +350 but I think the other two cards can go a little higher than that.
And a quick note on Asus. I used to have an Asus 670 and I loved the card, but my service experience wasn't great. When I had to RMA my card, it took a full month for my replacement. Luckily I had an old gtx260 to hold me over at the time.
gigabyte and asus have terrible warranty service.
evga is by far the best ive ever seen.
msi, i havent personally dealt with, but hear their turn around time is better than the latter.
go evga or msi.
Can vouch for MSI customer service being absolutely amazing.
Always emailed me back within the hour (their working times of course)
Had a twin frozr 6950 have a fan die - RMA'd it in. They told me they had no fans to fix the issue in stock and offered me a brand new twin frozr 7950. Expedited shipping aswell. Needless to say, I was very happy.
MSI offered to replace my GTX 570 with a GTX 670 for free but I had already fixed it and didn't want to cheat them c:
Yeah I am enjoying my experience with MSI products. I went MSI for both my motherboard and my gtx 970. I swear I haven't even heard my 970. It's whisper quiet. The sound of the PC before and after installing the card is virtually the same. I honestly can't tell a difference. Even running it at 100% utilization, I can't hear anything. And their afterburner utility is great.
I guess this is the place to ask about building? I'll be building a new gaming PC for a friend soon but i'm pretty stumped on Intel processors, what is the most cost-effective, I know they retail for a huge chunk of money here in the UK.
Also might grab him a 970 despite the slow .5 of VRAM issue though.
Guys, is a 500w 84+ PSU enough for mid-range or higher GPUs? Here's my full spec list (don't mind the graphics card, it's just a placeholder.)

Most cost effective setup is an i5 4460 and an H97 motherboard. No overclocking with that, though.

What exact PSU? Also that proc is running real hot for idle. Do you have to stock cooler?
Funfact the 850 evo went down in price, only 99.99 now

No it's just reading weird temperatures, msi control center, speedfan and hwinfo are reading normal temperatures.
As for the PSU, it's a Tacens Radix Eco 500W.
Figure I'll pop in here to ask for a bit of advice.
Currently I'm operating a rather old budget build:
AMD Phenom II X4 910 (2.6 GHz)
8GB DDR3
GeForce GTX 550 Ti
and like everybody else I'm looking into doing some upgrading for GTA V. Judging from specs, everything is pretty decent except my processor which is just about useless at this point so I figure that's the obvious thing to upgrade.
However, the better cards for my socket type (AM3) seems to be largely discontinued and hideously expensive, so I was curious if I would be better off upgrading my MOBO and processor, while keeping everything else in my computer the same. I'd like to do it at around the $300 price range for the MOBO + processor, or $200 if I can just upgrade the processor to something nicer.
550ti isn't going to run gta5 that great either.
550ti isn't going to run gta5 that great either.
Minimum requirements are an 8800gt, his card will be fine at low/medium settings.
550ti isn't going to run gta5 that great either.
Of course, but I'd be fine with Xbox 360 level graphics for a while, I'm mostly concerned about playing the game instead of experiencing the graphics. Also, I figure a card is far easier to upgrade later and less of a bottleneck than my current processor.
I've heard this SSD is crap but its so fuckin cheap...

I mean when you can get an 850 EVO of the same size for $7 more, I don't see the point.
I'm in dire need of a new CPU I think, I'm running a three-something years old i5 650 3.2Ghz and I'm hesitating between trying to Overclock it (hard to find information on it since it's quite old) or just buy a new one. And if I get a new one, I'm unsure which it's gonna be.
Any advice ? I'm running an Overclocked Nvidia 970 and have 8gb of ram, seems like the CPU is the only thing dragging my performance down when playing (I hardly ever run any game at 60 fps, not even Skyrim can consistently run at 60)
What motherboard do you have? What about a cooler for your CPU?
Pepper;47519492']Minimum requirements are an 8800gt, his card will be fine at low/medium settings.
hence the "that great" part in my post
didnt say it wouldnt run.

You realize the 8800gt is for everything on low, 800x600, pretty much less than 30fps.
This is my build right now.

Do you think its possible to upgrade to a future proof of 5 years or so? Or should I start a new build from scratch? If so, I don't know where to start, so could someone point me in the right direction?
4chan kiddies on /g/ are telling me to start from scratch.
If you want a noticeable upgrade, pick up a 3570k, aftermarket cooler, 970, and a new monitor. It'll be like a whole new computer. No need to get a new motherboard or RAM though.

An SSD wouldn't hurt, but all of this really depends on your budget.
I still have plenty of time to build a computer, but i never built one before. I've had laptops my whole life (maybe except for family computer 10 years ago). I still have plenty of time before I get money to do actual buying. I want to start doing some research so I know what I'm buying instead of asking people blindly. I honestly don't know any graphics cards and cpu's. Is there some kind of source I can read to get updated?
I've been looking at the mini itx cases and the ones I see on pcpartpicker are modded cases. I only play CS:GO and probably now will play a lot of GTA V. I want to be able to run it at the best possible settings on both games. Hoping for 144fps+ on both games or just cs:go. I'm not looking to overclock. Would I have to mod my case if I get mini itx case? I'm going to be setting my budget to be anywhere between $800~$1000. I still have about 2 months to pick out what I want and hopefully that's more than plenty to decide what I want to buy.

I posted a text/pictures guide and a long video series on building systems in the OP, you might want to check that out.

ooh I thought it only showed you how to build one. I took a quick glance at it and it had some more useful links. Thanks!

That would be a sidegrade at best, and a downgrade in many games. This would be far better, though you can probably find a used 3570k for cheaper, and can overclock it for more performance.

Also, do I need that cooler or can I just use the one I've been using for my i3?
I mean you can't overclock much with the stock cooler. And that SSD is a bad choice. You're saving $2 for a massively inferior SSD.
